  1. My last comment on the 50's at SLUH. I pulled out my "60 yearbook to get the football info correct. As good as the FB & BB teams were, the BEST TEAM those years were the rifle team. Fr. Hagan let anyone try out. I did once and wasn't a bad shot. I earned my expert marksman badge a few years later in the USMC. But I wasn't good enough for Hagan's deadeyes, they almost never missed the bullseye. The other best athlete in my class was Nelson "Bo" Burton, who led the bowling team, turned pro, and is in the HOF. We also had Harry Kohler in our class, a National Champion baton twirler as a freshman. He wowed us all at pep rallies and games with his tricks. We had a great time back then. I tell friends today that I spent 8 years in high school, living at home with my parents and 2 younger brothers, going from a Jr. Bill to a Billiken. I guess I turned out OK in the end. So far, so good.
  2. I hated you guys back then, but after playing on the SLU frosh team with Garry Garrison & Jerry Strange in '61 we became friends and I realized you were not so bad after all. I had a lot of CBC friends all through my 4 years at SLU.
  3. Not only in hoops, the 1960 football team had a defense that named themselves "the Hungry Huns". They were undefeated, untied & UNSCORED UPON through the first 5 games that year until the CBC game. The Cadets scored the first TD of the season on us and of course their fans went crazy. We were all stunned until John Mahoney ran back the next kickoff for a TD. They shut up and we went crazy. We won 33-7. The last game of the year was at Assumption in the mud after an all day & night cold rain that wound up 0-0. Final record 7-0-1 Moose Kause, ND AD spoke at our awards dinner. 3 linemen went to play for the Irish from that team, Anton, Simon & Videmschek. There were a lot of other great players on that team too of course who were at the reunion.
  4. The old man, class of '60, went to his 50th reunion recently. The 5 years I was there and a freshman at SLU, from '57 to '61 we never finished worse than 3rd in Class L. The '58 team was undefeated, the '61 team beat Bill Bradley's Crystal City team for the State Championship. They were 2nd once and 3rd twice in those years too. SLUH dominated under coach Emmit Hannick back then. I saw the new Danis Field House at the reunion, as well as the rest of the campus. Those were great days.
  5. I don't know Bernie as well as you guys, but he sounded phoney to me. What was that about kissing up to RM? Travel with him to the NCAA tournament after watching the X game on TV?
  6. Don't forget to pick up some salt water taffy while you are there. Yummy, especially the green mint.
  7. Steve is celebrating his 28th birthday, so the updates will have to wait a while I guess. Happy Birthday Sign Guy, thank you for doing this !!!
  8. Lets hear it for the little Will. Great first post !!!
  9. I'm surprised to hear that ARon. What else is there to do in SL winters besides play basketball? The lakes don't freeze to skate on, snow gets slushy the next day, can't sled on it for very long. My home had a hoop on the garage and I shot at it EVERY DAY from age 10 to 20. On cold days I'd come back inside after about 10 minutes to warm up both me and the ball because it wouldn't bounce any more. Both my younger brothers did likewise as they got older too. I loved playing 2 on 1 against them.
  10. and update the scoreboard. Great season, keep on winning !!!!
  11. Nostalgia rules, how about Gaslight Square? In 1964, our senior year Mike Dolan, Jim Harris and I opened the "key club" we called it above a place that played dixieland jazz on Olive St. our senior year. We all lived at home with our parents and did this on the QT, so we'd have a place to party. We could suck up cheap beers, get a buzz going then go down on the street and meet the hipsters who were bar hopping. The pad was minimally furnished but adequate for our needs. The floor would vibrate when the band played downstairs, but we got a complaint from the landlord that we made too much noise! My father got a letter from the realtor and raised hell with me since I am named after him that I was ruining his reputation. He was in the midtown Kiwanas club that met at the Salad Bowl. He moved his office from the Continental Building to Clayton before I got to SLU. Too bad, if he had not we could have commuted together from Richmond Hts. It all ended when we graduated that year, and I guess the neighborhood went to pot soon after.
  12. They out-shot us in the first half. We out hustled them in the second half. When we blitzed them out of the gate in the second half they were back on their heels the rest of the game. We are now finishing games like a good team should.
  13. The only one of the 3 "experts" on the CBS pre-game show to pick X to win tonight is Serbiak (sp?) Sorry Wally
  14. My math says only 50 man hours, great job everyone. Over 10,000 shirts, it should look great on TV. School Spirit @ SLU !!! I'm proud of my alma mater. I can see it on TV and not my computer tonight at home. I'm ready and enjoying the pregame show now.
  15. I like Dr. Coleman's track record over the past 10 years.
  16. Thanks, this 1964 and therefore not the most techie alumni who lives 2000 miles west of SLU appreciates this news. I hope we can also hear the radio guys on the link.
  17. Look no further than Allen Field House in Lawrence yesterday to see what the fans can do to bring their team back from the abysse. Please lets not hear any more smack about how we can beat Mizzou this year either. We still have something to prove to the world how great the Billiken is. I like your thinking slcute, welcome to the board.
  18. This link isn't the RM interview for me. Is it anywhere else?
  19. DV was emphatic that the mid-majors have been screwed in favor of the BCS bullies when he broadcast the "bracket buster" game at Murray State on Saturday. He said both the Racers & St. Mary's belonged in the dance at this point. Then he humbly apologised for ESPN's article about Jeremy Linn.
  20. You summed it up Ace by hitting the old nail on the head. Well done. We are not casual fans, they say "show me", but they better not wait too long. I predict sell outs next year. If it wasn't for the situation last year, we wouldn't be having this conversation now.
  21. Can you imagine what the attendance would be this year if Brad Beal was wearing Blue & White instead of orange & whatever down in Florida? When the Bills start getting the local BLUE CHIPPERS after a few years in the dance, there won't be enough seats to go around. Has Easy Ed's grandson committed yet?
  22. Heres a thought to make the band more effective. At Cal home games the band marches out of the tunnel during warmups before the game around the perimeter of the court, than up the half court line and around the visiting team a few times, then take their seats. I love it when the brass blows right in their opponents ears as they try to loosen up.
  23. One of the problems this year opposed to the Spoon years possibly is that the wrong games are being televised. The best situation would be only a few home games early in the year to get the team exposed to the casual fans and most all away and neutral court tournament games should be on local TV. Wasn't last nights game on channel 11? If you can sit home and watch why go in person, says the average lazy dork. I wonder since I've been enjoying all the last 10 or so games on my computer if even the kids in the dorms are doing the same thing? I wouldn't be surprised, this is the wired generation. It may take a few more years to turn things around for the masses. A good run in the Dance will help a lot next year.
  24. We were there last year and caught the Rebels upset of then #1 UNC. The rodeo came to town and Fremont St. was like Mardi Gras. Way less expensive downtown for everything. The places on the Strip are all over the top spectacular, lots of fancy casinos, sports books, etc. I guess it all depends how high a roller you are. The new places on the strip all have great ventilation systems, you can't even tell every is smoking. Best Wishes on the wedding, the Billikens are 15 point favorites tonight. Tough bet.
  25. Best tip, don't bet, you will lose eventually. Do head downtown for the Fremont Street night-time scene, besides the Strip.
