The Arena is NOT the Answer!!!
courtside replied to bluecrewprez's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
Winning games against high profile competition is the first step in creating interest. I disagree about 1pm start times on a Saturday. This will no longer be an issue, however 1pm Saturday starts are fine. I have been to many other places with 1pm or even earlier Sat starts and the place is packed and rockin'. The games that draw less students are Sun night through Tuesday night...from what I have seen over the years. But again, if you are good, people will go any time. Getting home Sat games even in the afternoon are just fine. ....if a college student can't go at 1pm on a Sat afternoon...they aren't interested and will never go...that time is fine. Sure everyone likes the weekend night games, but time of game is not an issue. I have been to too many places. No way. Games should not be catered to older alums with the money. Games in many other places do not do this, why should it be the case at SLU? The music etc...atmosphere should be lively, and be in line with having a raucous atmosphere. If SLU starts winning high profile games, there will be less and little debate about these types of choices....everyone will be happy...and the older folks will tolerate the new atmosphere, and may even come to enjoy it. SLU needs to also find some originality in its presentation too. As SLU wins and devotes more funds to basketball, more needs to be done to get rid of the advertisements at timeouts, on the court and around the court. The last thing anybody wants to see are all of those ads around the court come to a new building. For now, the decreased size of the new building will help, because SLU hasn't been doing well...and are getting half-filled crowds of an NBA sized Arena. Noise won't be an issue in the new building. If SLU can win at a high level, and draw a couple of thousand students on a regular basis...that should be the goal. And those students should and will be given a blue tee when they get their student tix...and have other opportunities for free blue tee's throughout the year from the Athletic Dept. That shouldn't be an issue. SLU isn't going to be a place where the students are located at half court...but in a smaller building, having them at both endzones is fine. SLU needs to market the basketball team to all incoming students and returning students. The basketball games need to be an event not to be missed win or lose. Win will help a lot but will not do it alone. Strong marketing, to students, yes...you actually have to give student s a reason to go....none of this well back when I was a kid stuff....win games against high profile teams, less ads....less down time...always have a flow and present an atmosphere...have traditions.....students should know all over campus that basketball games are not to be missed. ....that SLU is a men's basketball school....and when that happens...that SLU is a sports school. -
Missouri Class 4 & 5 Sweet 16 Brackets

>The Vashon game. I live in Normandy and UMSL is right >there. I'm not going out to Lindenwood for the McCluer North >game. I'll just see the winner of that game a couple days >later again at UMSL. Vashon and McCluer North met at >quarterfinals in 2005 and it could happen again in 2007. Actually that can't happen this year...Vashon and McCluer North meeting in quarters. It can happen in the semis though. Vashon plays Parkway South and the winner gets the winner of Jackson and Lindbergh to go to State. McCluer North plays Lafayette, and the winner gets the winner of Webster and DeSmet...to go to state. http://www.mshsaa.org/results/bracket.asp?Bracket_ID=600 -

No. Louisville bound 6'9 George Goode plays for their rival Raytown South. The teams split in regular season, winning tight home games both times. Goode only had 2 at halftime in a tight sloppy game....he stepped up big in 3rd for 9 points....but got a technical later in the 3rd...and was never heard from again...finished with 11 I believe and Raytown broke it open. -
Miller Career Academy losing early in districts....DeSoto losing to Farmington in districts...Chaminade losing to Parkway South in districts...Vashon squeaking one out tied with under a minute left in districts....Troy losing to Zumwalt South in districts...any time you want to join the parity party.

>I am glad to finally get a commitment, but is this kid a >legitimate recruit? I ask because last week I posted about >him and asking if anyone knew anything about his game and >received no real responses other than people chiming in on >the excitement that there is a school called Boyz to Men >Academy and one poster thinking he was Travis Relaford from >the KC area. Now everyone is annointing Brad and the staff >saints because they received a commitment from this kid. I >recall the same excitement last year when Horace signed. It >seems like anytime we sign anyone this board becomes >ecstatic. I know nothing about this kid and thats why I was >asking last week so I am not implying he is not a player, I >just would like to hear from people who have seen him play. >I did see him Saturday evening and he has a very solid build >and at least looks the part. If people are very patient with him. He will not....repeat he will not come in and duplicate the frosh year of TL and KL or come close. And you remember, those two started from the beginning....and struggled a lot for half of a season....this kid will not even be that. So now that we have that out of the way....he will likley get some immediate minutes because SLU is desperate for bodies. I would expect the 10 minutes his frosh year to adjust to the college game, make small contributions...it may even take him a couple of seasons of that....but I think he can and will be a solid contributor his last two seasons. He's overshadowed by highly talented teammates...and has played his way into some offers.
-
Both are versatile. Not in same class. SLU has big need at several positions. Suggs is a much more sought after player because of his potential, length, and athleticism. SLU would do just fine with both.

Sorry to hear that about your dad Skip.

Not sure I understand your question.

They are definitely two very different high school players. Relphorde is a big 2 guard(possibly could play the 3 as well) who can shoot 3's...although needs to improve elevation, etc..can use both hands to finish and put it on the floor...good court awareness and vision.....is often overshadowed by his 3 D-1 teammates because he is a "quiet" player, smart player, excellent conditioning...he isn't long, but that's okay. He won't come in and be a superstar, but will get minutes right away with SLU's current options and necessity...and after he makes the adjustment to college...his Sophomore season should be a solid player/contributor for SLU, hopefully more than that his last two seasons. Too bad he isn't getting those 10 minutes plus a game off of the bench this year, to learn and adjust or contribute. He is a solid recruit for SLU that could blossom into more after 1-2 seasons of college ball. Wish he was longer, but he has good height and strength/build for the 2 and possibly the 3. Plays against high level competition. Tyreke Evans gets all the pub because he has a demonstrative game, big crossovers, etc.. and he is more athletic and a big time star recruit...and Anthony Glover's little brother is their undersized inside beast headed to Seton Hall...who also is a much more demonstrative player....and throw in Tarver .....a lot of players on his team.

Are you ready to join the parity party yet? As you said, it is such a shame that McCluer North and Hazelwood Central had to play each other so early in the playoffs this year,.....oh wait that didn't happen because Hazelwood Central couldn't make it out of the semifinal round of districts against a Riverview team with 15 losses. Beaumont beats Gateway Tech in semis of districts as well....etc... There is still time to join the parity party.

Jeff Jordan had 18 and a nice game against fellow top 5-ish Warren last weeekend in Chicago.

>Whatever idiot? LOL > >Did you get beat up on the playground as a little kid? Did >the bigger kids steal your lunch money or not let you sit >with them in the cafeteria in high school? That's no reason >to take it out on me...just trying to help my misguided >buddy. > >Oh and for your info, the MVC is ranked 6th - AHEAD of the >Big 12. just a little info for those that don't want to >believe the facts so blatently laid out in front of them. I wil be waiting for the MVC to get more bids than the Big 12 this year and also do more damage than the Big 12 in it. Can't wait.
-
>Could it be that we just aren't very exciting to cover in >the press and that's why the newspapers could care less >about us? > >Or how about the fact that the MVC this year in the premeir >conference outside of the SEC, ACC, Pac-10's of the world? > >Everything isn't a vendetta against SLU folks. The day we >put a successful and entertaining product on the floor, >maybe then we get some press coverage. > >Or maybe its the fact we play in a conference with the >closest team about 400 miles away...or that 90% of our >conference games we have to fly to....or maybe the fact that >noone knows SLU is even fielding a team this year because WE >CAN'T WATCH THEM ON TV!! > >It makes you look pretty pathetic when you are whining about >media coverage of a very mediocre team. > >We had tons of preseason press due to the well deserved >hype...and we failed miserably in delivering, during our >golden oppotunity. > >it makes yourself look really sad, brian, when you make >comments like that. you sound like a whiney, jealous, 5 year >old... You need to take a trip outside of the STL region. The MVC had a lot of pub pre-season and early season.....and now...it is fighting for its life to put 2-3 teams in the NCAA's....and the A10 will very possibly get two teams.
-
>Heck, it wasn't all that long ago that the A-10 got five >bids! That would be the 2003-04 season the A10 received 5 teams. In 04-05 MVC had 3 to 2 edge 05-06 4-2. Everything else prior .....much different.

Why isn't Leon Powell a Billiken yet?
courtside replied to SLUDrew's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
Carroll is a good player. Tough player, very popular....played out of position at the 4 much of his first two years....ans he was always going to play behind Byars and Foster on the perimeter there. No shame in that because Foster and Byars are big time players for Vandy. He will help Mizzou quite a bit. -

>Anderson sure does have a lot of relatives. A son and a nephew is a lot? -
I don't care what the league is...a bottom dweller is going to rise up a few times a season and "inexplicably" beat one of their better conference foes at home. Happens every year in every league.
-
yep
-
Well...after leading Florida by 11 in the second half and losing the first time around...Vandy wasn't going to let it happen today. Win wasn't much of a surprise to me. Vandy is the 2nd best team in the SEC, a good club. Byars and Foster are big time studs. Great game. Great atmosphere as usual at Vandy.

Illinois, Mo St, SIU...and so on are discussed here more than Missouri. I do find it newsworthy when the state school gets a win over a ranked school that has a long home winning streak. ....People like myself would have read it and moved on. As I said, your problem is with V-Time...and I don't want to be a part of that discussion....however the content of what he wrote about was fine in general to me...and I decided to say so. ....especially considering masny other schools are discussed more often here imo. Have you read the SLU board lately? If you were this adamant about all of the threads regarding other schools....I would understand better. You can carry on all you like with V-Time ...I don't care. His topic imo was fine.
