  1. Nobody beats Billiken Roy. (Especially on the East Side.)
  2. Any little kids who are scared of the new Billikens are kids of parents who insisted on "safe zones" and participation trophies. They could use a little shock treatment to regain their inherent dignity.
  3. That seemed to be the Pillsbury Doughboy's only defensive move.
  4. Except, for both Ford and Hines: Hey, coach. Tell the kid HE'S ALLOWED TO RUN THE BASELINE ON A POST-BASKET INBOUNDS PLAY. That is all.
  5. For the record, the initial quick fix by LongLiveLisch
  6. One cannot fault The Wiz for his exorbitant error in predicting this game. He did not factor in the black swan slash line of Longtime Season Ticket Holder/Fan of the Game/Autographed Basketball. There was no way the Bills were going to lose this one with that going for them.
  7. Hey, what happened to the blue light atop the 'fetz after a win? Didn't anyone pass that along to Pestello when he came on board?
  8. Oh, well played, Bobby. Well played. [Grammatical golf clap.] So you're saying that the athletic marketing people Billked us out of an "i"?
  9. [cough, cough] The Fifth House [cough, cough]. So we can expect rehab in about 2050.
  10. That'll depend on how well he does in the Electoral College.
  11. Hey, guys -- it's Friday. This is a terrific opening to re-institute our longtime Friday tradition, especially given the need for a morale boost. Jimbo? Box? Where are you? And what has Oregon been up to lately?
  12. You were also at SLU the same time as me and Taj and juniorbill 76 and a few board lurkers (and possibly BRoy). One of the editors at the U. News around that time (Steve ____) had followed a similar path into the military and through Viet Nam. I never knew exactly where he was from (although I think I would have picked up the Oakland Avenue connection somewhere along the line), so I wondered if in fact you were he.
  13. Hey, remember the rules! No politics on the board. (But well played. )
  14. 5 for 12 from the field, 1 for 4 three pointers, 2-2 FT, 13 total points (2nd on team), 27 minutes. I'd say he's not likely to be benched now until the end of the year. (And good for him. It's been painful to watch him struggle -- and he probably still will -- but he works his butt off and manages to hold a grad school course load!)
  15. That was actually one of my guesses -- or at least "the military" -- since the U.S. withdrew in 1975. If he did nine years in the service right out of high school, that's impressive! But we speculate.
  16. User Actions Following stu durando‏@studurando SLU progression in A-10 games: lose by 34, lose by 21, lose by 11, lose by 7, win by 7. RETWEETS3 LIKES10 3:39 PM - 14 Jan 2017
  17. So what kept you busy for those nine years?
  18. I'm waiting for Quality is Job 1 to chime in on this one.
  19. From a St. Louis history group that I follow: "January 14, 1915: 102 years ago today, the Saint Louis University Basketball team played its first game on record. The Billikens won, beating 'Company E,' believed to be a company in the Missouri National Guard. The final score was 72-2. "Saint Louis University's athletic teams became known as the Billikens in 1911. They were previously called the Blue & White."
  20. Well, I suppose that joke may have been a tad obscure.
  21. He probably has some sort of undiagnosed injury.
  22. Which is better than better days being in the Horizon.
  23. It was much better than "coachspeak," of which I believe someone else has pointed out that Ford is a master. When I covered high school sports using a typewriter, we used to have an entire lexicon of coachspeak that we jokingly said could be injected into any article we wrote. "I'm proud of our kids...they played our game." "We just weren't ready to play today." "We lacked mental toughness," "I'll tell you, ______ is a well-coached team." Which is why, when Dick McDonald used to let go gems like, "If we get a few wins under our belt, you'll start to see our record improve," it was like a breath of fresh air. And much later, Majerus was the Hunter S. Thompson of coach trains-of-thought.
