  6. Bass Pro Shops to Add a Memphis Pyramid to Its Business Empire By RICHARD FAUSSET DEC. 3, 2014 Continue reading the main storySlide Show SLIDE SHOW|6 Photos Future of Memphis Landmark Is a Riddle No More Future of Memphis Landmark Is a Riddle No More CreditBrandon Dill for The New York Times Continue reading the main story Continue reading the main storyShare This Page Continue reading the main story MEMPHIS — For years, Memphis has been haunted by its Riddle of the Pyramid: What do you do with an empty 32-story glass-and-steel monument that was supposed to be this city’s answer to the Eiffel Tower or the Gateway Arch? That riddle has now been solved: The Pyramid, once a troubled arena for basketball and concerts, will be reborn as a hunting and fishing superstore hawking duck calls and tackle boxes. The much-maligned building, which once served as the home of the Memphis Grizzlies of the N.B.A. and the University of Memphis basketball program, is scheduled to officially reopen in late April or early May as an outpost of the Bass Pro Shops empire, the self-described “retail mecca for sportsmen,” whose massive hunting and fishing stores are fixtures on many a heartland feeder road. After months of shifting plans, officials from the Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops recently offered a peek at the ambitious, if thematically incongruent, features they are building inside the site. As for the new theme, think Disneyland in a duck blind. The 535,000 square feet of interior space at the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid — as the site will be called — will feature shooting and archery ranges, a bowling alley built to seem as though it is underwater, a 100-room hotel with lodging designed to look like cabins in a cypress swamp, and an observation deck patterned after the Grand Canyon skywalk. There will be aquariums stocked with 1,800 fish, a conservation-themed “waterfowling heritage center” and pools slithering with live alligators. 7. Valley Insider: "Spoon Ball" was a special time for Missouri State basketball For those Missouri State basketball fans under the age of 30, this might be hard to believe - especially with all the Selection Sunday bubbles that have gone pop over the past couple of decades - but ... There was a time in Missouri State men's basketball history when the Bears qualified for the NCAA Tournament most every year. A short, white-haired man, who wore turtlenecks and liked to eat burgers and drink a post-game cold one, patrolled the sideline. As the years pile up, we appreciate Charlie Spoonhour more. What he did in nine seasons as Bears' coach was nothing short of remarkable, taking a fledgling Division I program to five NCAA Tournaments and two NITs from 1983-92. Spoon Ball, it was called. The man could coach basketball and tell a funny story and talk with an Ozarks twang that made us identify. We're coming up on three years since Spoonhour died of a rare lung disease at age 72. He gets his due on Friday night with halftime recognition, including a banner-raising ceremony, at the Bears' season-opener against Eastern Illinois in JQH Arena. 9. Seriously, how can you read these paragraphs and not be concerned about the program: "Sunday's incident is the latest for a basketball program that had its share off off-court issues dating back to last season. In March, guards Wes Clark and Shane Rector were suspended after police arrested them on suspicion of marijuana possession. Senior forward Tony Criswell went to court for not paying rent and was eventually dismissed from the team. Shortly after the season Louisville transfer Zach Price was arrested twice in the same day for two separate assault incidents involving teammate Earnest Ross, a senior last season. Price was kicked off the team and later pleaded guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges. All those incidents occurred on former coach Frank Haith's watch. In August, Anderson dismissed forward Torren Jones for an undisclosed violation of team rules. "
  10. Pretty good/interesting read: http://www.pjstar.com/article/20140910/SPORTS/140919858/10930/SPORTS/?Start=1 According to an NCAA report released in August, expenses exceeded generated revenue in the past decade at all but 20 of 345 Division I schools reporting. All 20 schools in the black are members of the Football Bowl Subdivision (highest level). But there is great financial disparity even among the biggest fish in college sports. Overall in those 10 years, generated revenues grew by 83 percent at FBS schools, while expenses were up 115 percent. FBS schools are a median 73 percent self-sufficient. 14. DESTIN, Fla. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference sent a strong message to the NCAA on Friday: provide the Big Five some autonomy or they'll form their own division. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said if the Big Five conferences — which also include the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12, the Big Ten and the Pac-12 — don't get the flexibility needed to create their own bylaws, the next step would be to move to "Division IV." "It's not something we want to do," Slive said on the final day of the SEC meetings. "We want to the ability to have autonomy in areas that has a nexus to the well-being of student athletes. I am somewhat optimistic it will pass, but if it doesn't, our league would certainly want to move to a Division IV. My colleagues, I can't speak for anybody else, but I'd be surprised if they didn't feel the same way." Moving to Division IV would keep the Big Five under the NCAA umbrella while granting college football's biggest money makers the kind of power to better take care of student-athletes. The SEC, for example, would like to pay full cost of college attendance, provide long-term medical coverage and offer incentives to kids who return to school and complete degrees. Smaller Division 1 schools likely can't afford the changes the major conferences are seeking. And while D-II and D-III have their own rules, forming a D-IV would seemingly create a wider divide between the Big Five and other smaller schools. 19. Yes, I know. And a local media "celebrity" who does stints on Donnybrook. The over 60 set knows him very well.
  20. It's really too bad that is what you took from it. In an effort to continue to build the program and student fan base, do you think it's wise to not acknowledge and reward and respect the folks that put in the time and effort to attend more games and practices? These kids sacrifice study time and other activities to be at most and in a lot of cases ALL of the games/practices/women's games. You were at a hell of a lot of events as a student. Should your dedication have been ignored for someone who came to a couple of games and submitted a 30 second video that may have been slightly "better" than yours in the eyes of some judges? Go back and re-read what I wrote. It's all about a team effort here. Do the math. Send 70 students. 30 band members (the most you are allowed) and 40 students from the video competition. How is that not an equitable situation?
  21. I'm not sure what you are saying here?
  22. Because slu is only allowing 20 total band members to go. The max allowed is 30..a rule set by the conference. There are WAY more undergrads than 30! And for those thinking the band undergrads should have posted a video? Well, some did. Personally, I don't think it's reasonable for them to have to jump thru an additional hoop since they have already shown there dedication to slu by attending 10 preseason practices, numerous women's games as well as most likely more men's games than some of the contest winners. I would have liked the band to be a full band of undergrads. 30 members, then use the additional 40 spots for the students in the contest. You still have 70 students going AND you have a full band, like every other school will have AND you reward the dedication of those undergrad band members who get to go. Looks like a win for all involved in that scenario.
  23. Out of the "winners", I'd like to know how many games they attended this season. Women's games? There are undergrad band members who I suspect have attendeded far more in both categories who won't get to go because slu is sending fewer than the maximum allowed number of band members. These undergrad band members are volunteering their time to the band and attending more games than some of the winners in the contest,
