  1. Timmerman's Take on this: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/slu/billiken-beat/article_0f2b75bc-c0a7-5fb5-b5e4-c3c3096888c5.html#.UvRND2EbmQA.twitter
  2. 50 student winners will get all expense paid trips to the A-10 Tourney. Now if only SLU would take 10 of the trips and give them to the band members who have been at every home game and multiple women's games so we could have our full allotment instead of having 10 fewer members than the maximum. Only 20 band members are going. The Max allowed (and other schools will have this) is 30. How about some reward for dedication and attendance at games that aren't the "big" ones...not just making a video? We make more noise anyway...AND SHOW UP! Just a thought,
  3. the sideline reporter was Alexa Datt. I did a quick search last nite and found this video of her with Bill Murray last week...at a Fordham/Rhode Island Game. Which made ZERO sense at all...until it came up in her interview with Bill that his son is an assistant coach at Rhode Island. So, thanks to Alexa Datt, I now know that Bill Murray's son coaches at Rhode Island.
  4. I distinctly remember Majerus at an event at Chaifetz. Everything else went smooth, well-run and fun. BUT, because SLU always screws up the details, the one thing that stands out is a microphone handed to Majerus that didn't work and his comment about not being surprised that it DIDNT work. The folks at SLU have great, big plans, but when it comes to execution, there is ALWAYS some little thing that goes wrong that is noticible. Oh, and Don't get me started on how they can't keep a simple secret. -Free the Band
  5. Which Band... SLU's band or VCU's? The SLU band iIS an official part of the Athletic Department. Chris May is our boss.
  6. And possibly coming soon to the womens' game... a 10 second rule. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/womens-game-looking-implement-backcourt-rule
  7. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/22217747/ncaa-set-to-vote-on-key-rule-changes-shot-clock-likely-to-remain "-The block/charge call could be slightly altered in an effort to help the offensive player. Under the existing rule, the secondary defender needs to be in legal guarding position before the player leaves the ground. The new interpretation would be that the defender needs to be set before the offensive player begins the upward motion of his shot. "We feel this would help referees and also reduce the number of charge calls," the source said."

  11. Still wish they could play the women's games in the Pavillion. 175 people in bleachers that seat 500 is far better than that same number in a building that seats 10600
  12. From the Post-dispatch April 7, 2013 Alden was less specific about the notion of reviving a dormant basketball rivalry with SLU, a topic that surfaced anew when the Tigers and Billikens were bracketed in the same NCAA Tournament region a matchup that never materialized. Its reasonable to say we could certainly have those discussions somewhere down the line, he said. But Alden pointed to what he considers a variety of obstacles to that in the immediate future, specifically citing a national scheduling philosophy that he said emphasizes getting at least four games against teams that Mizzou would consider in the big five conferences and the fact that MU already has an annual game in St. Louis but none in Kansas City. Our focus has to got to be instead of having two games in St. Louis, how can we have one game in St. Louis and one in Kansas City? he said. And we know were always going to play Illinois in St. Louis. So all of that stuff enters into the equation. So I think its more complicated than when people say, Well, they just dont want to play SLU. That isnt what it is. Would we talk to (SLU athletics director) Chris May? Absolutely, wed want to talk about it. But we have a lot of other issues that were having to deal with besides just scheduling that one basketball game.
  13. So, on a Friday afternoon where it will likely get buried in the local tv news... and will be in the least read newspaper of the week (the Saturday edition) heading into the Cardinals home opener on Monday? This is poor timing. Its like yelling into the wilderness alone...will anyone hear it? I was hoping they would time it early in the week (perhaps this past week) so it woudn't get lost in other stories. At this point, since it has been so long since the season ended and that it is Jim Crews and not a "big" splashy hire...it becomes ho-hum news. I
  14. . Sure , that is EXACTLY what I was suggesting we do in my post. Good grief.
  15. Nope, more than likely not. But talking with these type of people might educate Chris May as to the possible coaches that are out there, learn more about the outsider's view of the position (and SLU, and Biondi and Chris May for that matter). Discussing this position with people outside of the "inner circle" might be a good idea. Talking to somone who has gone to multiple final fours in teh past ten years just might help in your OWN search for a successor to Majerus, even if it isnt that guy. if you come back to Crews as your guy...then so be it. He did a great job of minding the store this year. Lets hope he knows how to order more supplies to re-stock the shelves. Recruiting has changed a bit since he went 7and21 in his final year at Evansville in 2001/02 (I don't know if you count his time at Army, because of the recruiting issues there.)

  18. Separate question..does anyone know the age a child has to be to need a ticket?
  19. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/-college-basketball-mens-tournament/news/20130320/drew-cannon-butler/ NEW YORK -- The formal basketball career of Drew Cannon ended in eighth grade as the sixth man of his junior high team. In college at Duke, Cannon's only hoops experience came from an intramural team called the Norse Forse. When Cannon graduated with a degree in statistics last spring, he had modest expectations of finding a job right away. "We were hoping he would not be living in the basement," said Jim Cannon, his father. "That was our goal. And his." Instead of toiling in the basement, Cannon spent the season on the Butler bench and will be with the team when the Bulldogs play Bucknell in the NCAA tournament on Thursday. Cannon's experience interning with recruiting analyst Dave Telep and his advanced writing about basketball analytics gained the attention of Butler coach Brad Stevens, who offered him a job as a graduate manager this summer. Cannon takes MBA classes at Butler and makes just $1,000 per month, but his work has significantly impacted how Butler uses lineups and helped him emerge as a potentially transformative figure on the college basketball landscape. Cannon is considered to be the first pure statistics-based hire on a college basketball staff. When Stevens called to offer Cannon a job, Cannon's father said to his son, "Does he realize you are monumentally under qualified for this position?" 21. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/college-basketball-brutal-watch-right-now "It's organized fouling," Bilas said. "The referees feel like they can't call it all, and they don't call it all. The result is we're having wrestling matches instead of basketball games. It doesn't take long, if you're really watching, to see what's happening and say, 'Oh my god, this is awful.'"
  22. From from Deadspin: Today Boeheim explained his motivation. Talking to the Syracuse Post-Standard, he says his grudge against Katz relates to the sexual abuse allegations (later dropped) against former assistant Bernie Fine: "It's really simple," he explained. "I went to New York last year [2011] to play in the (NIT Pre-Season Tip-Off) Tournament in November and he (Katz) asked if he could interview me about the tournament. And I said, ‘Yeah, but I can't talk about the (Bernie Fine) investigation.' "We got in the room and he put me on camera - there were several witnesses there - and he asked me what I'd told him I couldn't answer. I kept telling him, ‘I can't answer that.' And he asked me, like, 10 times on camera. He never took the camera off me. "Two or three people in the room were so disgusted they walked out of the room. The producer came over and apologized afterward. And I told Katz right then and there, ‘Don't talk to me. Do not try to talk to me again.' "That's what this is about. It's about one thing: An interview that was supposed to be about a tournament we were playing in, and not about the (Bernie Fine) case. And he kept asking me about the case over and over and over again. He kept the camera on me, trying to get me to react ... and I just didn't."
  23. http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/sport/8289683/Sharks-slot-American-import-into-final-section Sharks slot American import into final sectionThe final piece of the Southland Sharks 2013 National Basketball League puzzle has been added with the signing of St Louis University product Brian Conklin as their second import. New coach Paul Henare has been scouring the world and talking to many people in an attempt to pick up an import who he thinks can add plenty to the Sharks' team for the 2013 season. Conklin's name came up early in discussions when Henare talked with a player agent whom he trusted about possible import options. It is understood Conklin was originally looking at opportunities playing in Europe or staying in the United States and playing in the D-league, but when it became apparent the 23-year-old would be available, Henare decided to pounce after plenty of research on him. Henare sorted people to watch him play and give feedback and he also had a discussion with Tall Black Rob Lowe who was a team-mate of Conklin at St Louis University. The Sharks' coach said it all pointed to the power forward being a good pick up. "Out of all the guys I looked over in that time, and there's been several, he's probably the one I spent the most time on and that's probably why I feel pretty comfortable signing him," Henare said yesterday. "He's a big body, he's probably not as tall as I was looking for in that second import, he only stands at [1.98m] which isn't that tall for his position. "He's a power forward, he'll probably play a bit of centre for us but he's a really strong body, he works hard, he gives a good target inside. He's sort of a around-the-bucket type guy, he's got a good mid-range shot on him as well. But the thing I loved about him is from all accounts his work ethic is great, he plays with super high energy." The 1.98m 104kg forward played for the SLU Billikens under legendary late college coach Rick Majerus from 2008-2012. Conklin helped the Billikens into the round of 32 at last year's NCAA tournament before they suffered a heart-breaking four point loss to top seeded Michigan State. A native of Oregon, Conklin was also called up to try out for the Denver Nuggets in mid-2012. In his four seasons at St Louis University he played 133 games, starting in 102 of them. He averaged 23.6 minutes per game, averaged 4.1 rebounds per game and 8.7 points. Conklin will arrive in Invercargill in mid-March in preparation for the Sharks' season opener on April 19. Henare said the plan was to have the entire squad in Invercargill in mid-March to give them at least four weeks all together before game one. Ad Feedback The Sharks' other import, Kevin Braswell, is in Auckland where he is training and Henare was happy with where he was.
  24. Students rushed the court and were told to leave because the game wasn't over. Well, with the history between those two programs...who can blame the LaSalle students for being over anxious?!
