Jerram
Just wondering how New Mexico's upset of UNLV will affect their BPI...they are 22nd going into today. Especially with momentum as part of the stat...they have now won 7 in a row and beaten two ranked teams (in the usual polls...but, UNLV is 23 in BPI and SDSU is 46th so...maybe they don't budge?)....still trying to figure out how we are ranked so much higher than them. If I understand the BPI - the # of points you win by place a big part in the rankings - we have generally won by a lot points. Someone with a better understanding can fill in more. slu72
UNM is 21-4 w/ some quality wins. Hey, they beat us, but only because JJ missed that last second put back. I'd expect them to crack the top 25 this week.
kshoe
Slu and new Mexico are basically equal and an argument for either team could be made. If you had no other data point than the 4 point loss at their place it's important to remember home court is typically worth about 4 points. Put another way, we tie ona neutral court. Of course that is just one game but nobody should assume that because they beat us they are the better team.
JettFlight5
New Mexico jumped Bills in KenPom, but the Bills have a solid advantage in BPI. Bills are 9th in the ESPN metric. Bills 11 in KenPom, and today was the first time in a week or two they've been outside the Top 10.
Jerram
Yeah, and now NM is solidly the two main polls and the Bills are lingering the high 20s. I gotta wonder who will be more influenced by the BPI, coaches or AP? (if at all). If a team like SLU is significantly different in the BPI than in the other polls, I wonder if it gets the attention of the voters in the other polls and they look a little bit closer to see if they are missing something. Maybe that translates to a higher (or lower) ranking in the other polls. Any evidence to suggest that this occurs with the RPI? Or maybe some of them just think, "naw, its just another dumb formula" and ignore it altogether (TMI)....
MB73
If you go by RPI, it is pretty close, similar records 21-4 to our 21-5. NM has 3 good wins, they beat us (22), SD St (33), and UNLV (12) RPI. Our best is St. Joe (47) so you have to give them the slight edge thought their RPI is (26) to ours is (22) and their SOS is (87) to our 78. A toss up, this shows the bias toward teams with wins over top teams.
