I said: He is a dark horse for a starting spot in my opinion

Skip said: A starting spot this year? Explain?

You said: Yes, at the PF spot if CE plays the three.

So I think the Dark Horse part is implied in all of those.

I merely used the stat to say he has nice "shooting touch" not to say he was a good shooter. The sample size was 3-5 (conference play and CBI only) so obviously that stat doesnt prove much. With more attempts, I think the percentage would come down some. Jon Smith shot 58% from the field. If he took a lot more shots and shot 50% would that mean he regressed? Not necessarily.

Fine. Anything can happen but I don't see CR starting for a meaningful number of games unless injuries or other issues affect the availability of the other bigs on this team.

As for the shooting % numbers, take it from somebody that works in statistics for a career; 3 of 5 should never be quoted as "he shot over 50% from mid-range" or as evidence that he has a nice shooting touch. It is intentionally misleading. The 9 of 20 from uncontested FTs, many of which were ugly bricks, is a much better sample set to determine whether a player can shoot from the outside. Making a couple buckets during your best game of the season does not mean you are a good shooter.

I said specifically that the statistics didn't mean much.

I am very big on Cory's game obviously others are not as much. They obviously just have a bias against texas players.

I think the major concern, and I hope the AD is thinking about this, is where we put the National Championship Trophy...

I was in North Carolina over the weekend and toured Cameron Indoor. We may have to send the AD there to get some ideas.

Or we have a bias against predicting guys that average 2 and 2 with a poor shooting % will somehow be good enough to average 8-10 points and 6-8 rebounds (the minimum I would expect out of a PF starter on next year's team) in one offseason.

I was joking.

We will have to find out when the season comes but I will bet anyone willing that CR starts at least two games.

You're not the only one who's big on Cory's game!

I looked up his stats for every game in conference play and he was listed as shooting 60% on "jumper". Again, I didn't say he was an outstanding shooter, but I said he showed nice shooting touch. Cody shot 37%, but he is still a better shooter than Cory by far.

You have to take a lot of those stats with a grain of salt considering he was a 17 year old kid. It would be nice if we could get some other people to way in on this discussion as well.

I'll "weigh" in on the discussion. The way CR came on at the end of the year shows he has upside. Good defender which RM admires most in his players. But a starter next year...? don't see it unless he makes tremendous strides over the summer in terms of strength and offensive skills. RL, despite what we saw in that Summit game, was a force at the under 19 world games. So figure he'll get the most minutes at the 4 by the end of the year after adjusting to the physical grind of US hoops. Can see CR pushing BC for his minutes at the 4 and will probably spell WR for 10mpg at a minimum. I share your enthusiasm for CR because he came on so strong at the end. The key now is for him to build on that experience thru hard work in the weight room and on improving his offensive skill set.

I think certain players get type-cast. "Everyone" believes Roe Loe is destined for immediate stardom, and "no one" believes Corey Remekun will ever be more than a spot role player. People pick their favorites for whatever personal reasons and biases they have and just appreciate the others because there needs to be enough players for practice and an 8- or 9-man rotation or to insure against injuries or foul trouble. I don't see why CR can't outgrow the limited role he had last season (and I can't see why we have to put so much pressure on RL to be great when he's getting his first taste of D-I ball). Consider how Maurice Jeffers went from being "merely" a defensive specialist in '00 to being a star in '01 and getting drafted by the NBA.

I wish we had a Mo Jeffers type on this team... hopefully DE is approaching that type of player by his soph year and becomes MoJ2 by his junior season. Mo Jeffers was one of SLU's most unsung heroes in recent years.

This thread is a classic example of over-exagerating to make a point. You've said CR is probably RM's biggest steal recruit, will shoot over 50% from 10-12 feet and will start on a very good team next year. This is a guy that averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds last year and only shot 42% from the field and 45% from FT land. Skip has probably exagerated some of his faults to make a point.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Will he be better next year? Absolutely. Will he be good enough to start ahead of WR, RL, CE or even BC? Highly doubtful. Fans always tend to remember the last performance so his great game against VCU is obviously clouding your judgement on what he will be able to contribute next year. You've also had a tendency in the past to undervalue the expected impact of the international guys so I suspect you are doing that with Loe.

CR has the potential to be a very good center for us eventually and it sounds like he is working his ass off in the offseason, but as long as Willie is on this team, its going to be very hard for him to get more than 20 minutes a game.

I wasn't overexagerating his faults. The numbers I quoted were facts. I like CR. I hope he can play 15 mpg at the 5. I won't say he'll never play the 4, but he won't get any significant minutes there. He has no game facing or away from the basket. He's not a good shooter from 10-12 feet and if he was it makes his shooting last year inside 12 feet all that much worse. I hope Cory comes back this year stronger and with the ability to finish around the basket, something he didn't do well last year except for the final game.
