Would relocation of Rams open opportunity for SLU?
johnbj14 replied to bk18's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
There doesn't have to be a direct correlation between success in one revenue sport and another. It is a relatively weak argument for why a team shouldn't be founded. If you want to say that there aren't enough resources to spread around I get that, but if the boosters sat down and said their money is going to football I am sure you would see something happen. Their money ultimately determines what happens athletically. If they say fix the basketball program that will happen. While unlikely, if they back football then football will potentially happen. -
According to the MSHAA: If you transfer schools, you will be ineligible for 365 days, unless your circumstances meet one of the exceptions listed in the MSHSAA Residence and Transfer Rules (By-Law 3.10). Make an appointment with the school's athletic director to review these exceptions. Several, but not all, are described below. Exception 1: If you move with your entire family to your new school district, you will be eligible at your new school provided you were eligible in all other respects at your former school and provided there are no other issues with the transfer. You and your entire family must move to the new residence at the same time prior to attending classes. Always check with your school principal or athletic director before you transfer to determine whether it will affect your eligibility. Discipline follows a student to a new school. Being expelled from a school also causes 365 days of ineligibility for a student. Exception 2: A student may be eligible immediately at the school of his or her choice upon first being promoted from the 8th grade into the 9th grade, provided the student is eligible in all other respects. Exception 10: Foreign Exchange Students are eligible for varsity competition for one year only and only if they are seniors (semester 7 or 8), provided they are participating in an exchange program listed by CSIET. However, no member of the school's coaching staff for the sport concerned may serve as a host family. You shall become ineligible for 365 days if you transfer to another school for athletic reasons.

http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaaf/writer/jon-solomon/25457033/college-sports-discussing-eliminating-academic-standards-for-freshmenThe NCAA is apparently looking into getting rid of initial eligibility requirements for athletes. This could greatly influence someone such as Draggs or TilMon if he hadn't transfered away. Obviously it is has not happened yet, but the fact the NCAA is talking about it is interesting nonetheless.

I thought if you transferred in the ncaa it isn't called a redshirt, but that you still have the 5 years to do 4. In other words, I believe academically he is a junior but eligibility is a sophomore based simply on transfer policies.

And frequency to not pass.

Not that I want to stop the blue kool-aid from flowing, but i think we should look at this within some aspect of reason. It is still a small sample on some of these guys. Granted, last night was good for this new lineup and Hines did play well. However, I am not ready to proclaim him as the best PG on the roster at least for a couple more games. My apprehension does not stem from an endorsement of MR, rather just the desire to see Hines play more and showcase what he can do. I love the combination of Hines and Bishop, but just don't want to set myself up for disappointment if I claim them as something they are not. On a related note, I think this recent 3 game stretch has put something into perspective for me. MR on the most part has played well this season. Yet, the offense looks much better with him playing less. This would seem to not make much sense, but I think there is a logical reason for it. Miles' game revolves around his ability to draw fouls and not much else. This is great that he had the attacking mentality, but sometimes the offense could really stall with him on the court. His lack of an outside jumper made perimeter ball reversals less of a true threat to the defense. Now that we have more perimeter shooters on the court, it is paying huge dividends. I like this new lineup even though the defense is not great, and hopefully we can roll with and it continues to be effective.

I will say this because I didn't get to actually watch the game, I'm glad we got the win but Davidson is not sound defensively. That being said, I am more than play trotting this lineup out there if it means points. Defense isn't being played regardless so why not score a little?
-
I know that, which only weakens whatever perceived reasons the coaches had for not playing him. The narrative has been from some that his D is what keeps him out of the rotation. Irrespective of no one on the team playing good defense, he has to play because he is a threat offensively.
-
For all of his deficiencies on D, Bishop has to play if we want a chance at winning. The kid just makes things happen on offense.
-
Really not sure on why you suspend a kid, sit him two days in practice (implying still suspended), and then play him. Perhaps it is because of thin roster but my goodness that is not consistent.

Would relocation of Rams open opportunity for SLU?

While I would love SLU to consider reviving the program, it certainly would take a tremendous amount of capital backed by boosters. I don't know if they are interested in that, I would assume not. However, the school would be foolish to not at least examine the potential market for a team. Or at the very least see the potential for the basketball program to take a big slice of the television ratings if they return to prominence. -
Ah I didn't know that we had offered Steve McElvene, probably because I was not yet a student here when he was being recruited. And as for the risk associated, I don't think next year will be much different that this one so what is the harm in trying to get a talented kid? (assuming he is worthy of a scholarship and all that good stuff)

I agree. It has worked out pretty well for Dayton with the PQ they took on. He has better size and what appears to be skill than our current bigs, so while there is risk the upside could be huge.

While the video of Draggs isn't against the best competition, this is very very intriguing. Yeah his history isn't the best, but something in me is telling me the Bills should take a chance on this guy. Flashes good athleticism, has a ton of size, and has very good court vision. Maybe Zeke could help out the recruiting effort. Even though he may not be qualified out of the gate, I really am intrigued by this.

Update:

There is a common topic that comes up in many threads on this board, that of recruiting. Recruiting is unquestionably vital to the success of a program, and when combined with good development that is where special teams are made. As a subset of this recruiting topic, many posters will echo some variant of the phrase "SLU needs to recuit locally." While I agree that the talent pool has seen a rapid growth in St. Louis recently, and that many of these players would be excellent for the program, I must admit that I do not fully agree with the crusade when the local kids spurn us. Let me explain my rationale on this point, because it is a little confusing. The growing trend in America is that the general population of college students are going away to school at a higher rate than before. Many students cannot wait to get out of the house and feel some form of independence. I find it interesting, then, that when it comes to athletics people expect athletes to be different. Fans pine for 18 year old kids to have a yearning to stay home when the general population is not demonstrating this same trait. It seems a little unjust to place this expectation that they are automatically wired differently, and placing entirety of blame on a coaching staff when local talent leaves. I must note: I am not using this as a defense of the current coaching staff. Rather, I believe that the inability to secure local kids is something that a new coach may not fix. We are not a blue blood, such as Kansas, that all of the in state players dream of playing for. A good parallel to our situation would be DePaul. Back in the day, they did recruit well locally (mainly because WGN carried their games nationally prior to ESPN) and had a great pipeline of talent. This was a different era, and today they struggle to recruit local talent because the elite Chicago players do not feel a pull to stay home, just as many students from Chicago leave when they make their college decisions. The point I am ultimately making is this: whoever the coaching staff happens to be should try and recruit the local talent if they believe that players will be right for the program and talented. However, we as a board must adjust our expectations for every time a local player leaves. SLU simply does not have the storied history to be the apple of young player's eye. That being said, I do truly hope that whoever the coach is can get the best players, local or otherwise.

Something I realized today: much was made of JT playing pick up with the current team at the rec. At the time, many people perceived that as an advantage. However, he may have seen the lack of talent and that could have ultimately been a negative. Granted, there's nothing to confirm this but I wouldn't be surprised.

First, I'm a big fan of Wiz's model and the unique analysis he can provide. Second, his model did not account for the lineup put out there tonight. I'm sure that info would have changed the projection a bit. Which direction, I cannot be sure. But his model did not anticipate JC making the decisions he did.
-
Check the GDT. Posted the tweets in there on accident. Edit: He didn't really address it.
-
JC not really giving a reason for the suspension, or duration, leads me to believe we won't be seeing him for a while. It wasn't even a "violation of team rules" answer which usually means it is short. Something to watch going forward I guess.

Had to split into two posts but here is the last nugget I found:

JC not really giving much info:

I would love to have Biancardi make a return to SLU, especially with all the connections he has from being ESPN's recruiting director. Probably knows every kid on the top lists inside and out, as well as what they want in their college choice. That ship passed long ago though.
