Not sure what you know but when you say Crews could coach you show that you don't know much.  Crews was suppose to be a good X an O guy but he was clearly over matched here.

Crews can coach, he can't and never could recruit! That's my point. He actually was a good x and o coach that's why Majerus had him there. He wasn't at slu to recruit. So when he was hired what in his coaching career made AD think he was going to be different at SLU??? That is my point.

The easy excuse at the time was that "it would have looked bad to not give Crews an extension" after his two years of success. That attitude was precisely the problem with how Chris May bungled the whole thing. He didn't have the balls to say, "Thank you for your service, Jim Crews, but we're moving on." Instead Crews gets a 5 year contract. In my opinion, May still doesn't get enough blame for the catastrophe of SLU basketball 2014-2016. Most universities would have fired their AD's after something of the sort.

This and Big East and the guy still is at SLU. Definition of insanity. Crews could coach, but couldn't recruit. My 90 year old mother said that when he was hired! She is a die-hard lifer Hoosier fan. How did AD not know that? Crews won with players Harriman and Moser recruited and Whitesell was the brains of the operation behind Coach Majerus. Then again, maybe AD didn't make call in Crews, Chaifetz hired Ford and WWT guys hired new soccer coach. What do I know.

  3. SLU should and has potential to be whatever it wants to be. I totally would want to be Loyola this week for sure. My point is we have  b of t memebers that actually say SLU will never be a Xavier, Creighton, etc, we don't want to be and that's fine! I'll find the posts saying pretty much same thing supposedly from the chairman! The lack the vision to see the benefits of being an elite program for school and region is sad, it's gonna be tough getting to Loyola status with that mindset. We lucked out on Coach Ford because Chaifetz hired him and went over AD Fisher's head, just like WWT guys told AD Fisher hire new soccer coach after he bumbled the whole process from day one, granted after watching the whole men's program go down the crapper for years and doing nothing. He's a light weight and SLU can do better. He would probably be a really good D3 AD where academics are priority, he loves talking about GPA. Funny thing after watching basketball nonstop all week I couldn't tell you one team in NCAA tournaments GPA! That is the student athletes jobs to get good grades, its standard work in school. I want a real, serious athletic department and director, not an over paid suit who touts standard work. SLU can do better. We the fans deserve better. This week is a great example that change is needed, also former Loyola AD is at Penn, they made Tournament too. Guess it was just luck. Thanks

Loyola is hardly "ahead" of us.  They are riding high and deservedly so.  If UMBC beats K State tomorrow, are they "ahead" of us too?  Rogue teams make the Sweet Sixteen every year.  As Bay said, its the matchup.  Loyola is one shot away from either game of going home.  Mason made a Final Four.  So did Indiana State.  Utah.  VCU.  Seton Hall.  Western Kentucky.  None really sustained that peak with maybe the exception of VCU.  Porter Moser and company get kudos for now.  Let's wait and see where this goes.

My point is they have a sweet sixteen and we don't.

  5. I got to know Coach Moser when he was at SLU and am so happy for him and his program. Very nice fellow. Reminded me of one of Coach Majerus' SLU teams tonight against Tennessee, and why wouldn't it?! He's been there 7 years and has a sweet sixteen on his resume. AD Jeff Fisher has been at SLU 10 years and 0 sweet sixteens. I do believe Coach Majerus would of made it if his health didn't take his life. So funny because AD Fisher made a comment towards the end of the Jim Crews era, after a game in Lorenzinis, in mixed company, when Coach Moser's name was mentioned coming back to SLU. All AD Fisher said was that the guy needed to be cut off and smirked, then walked away. Can't believe Loyola is now ahead of us. Hopefully Coach Ford stays and gets us there!

the more i think about our chairman's response to my post, the hotter i get.   you and the rest of the bot high rollers think that because your write a huge check likely on a regular basis you can play the arrogant "i know but you dont so shut up" roll.   well while my meager check might not even be close to your's the fact is mine and the majority of posters on this board, write more of their blood funds to help supply their escape, billiken basketball than you do.   i would bet my check makes writing tuition checks for my kids, paying the utility bills, putting gas in my car to get to my 8-5 job a hell of a lot more challenging than your's does.   fans like me and taj and brian, bleed blue and we are the real billiken fans that fill the damn seats, buy the beers, sing the national anthem every game, etc.   you and your cronies miss more games and take more forgranted than we ever do.   we need a place like billikens.com to try to help each other with our passion and try to know what is going on because god knows stu isnt getting the real story from any of the bot, krafty, pesty or stormy.

you and the bot had the chance to stop this mess, you did nothing and say nothing.  and we the real fandom are forced to speculate and wish and complain because we have nothing else to base this whole trainwreck on.   but hey joe, thats all we deserve right.   we should just "shut up, and write checks and come to the games"  that's all we are apparently entitled to.   meanwhile thousands of fans like me, taj and brian, are frozen out and hurting from the whole unfair event.   you let our billikens bleed when they shouldnt have.   meanwhile, chris may and travis ford have to paint on fake smiles and be quiet and spout the company line "no comment" when these dying fans are begging for what's going on.   and most wrong, four young men are forever marked wrongly with the speculation you allowed to happen.   they will forever be more known for what didnt happen but you allowed to be thrown at them.

i hope you and the rest of the bot are real proud of yourselves.

now we wait for your full report on what happened. starting prior to the season at the cheerleaders appartment to now.   please tell us the whole assorted story and  how wrong we got it and how the four players deserved to wear the SA on their chest for the rest of their lives and why.

I can't imagine Mike Shanahan posting on the board like this guy. Never. Hard to take this guy seriously. If you haven't figured out yet why slu is where it is, look no further than its leadership. Case in point. Very good post Roy, well said.

  7. Next year team won't be as good.  They pay her a lot and to not make a tournament by now with best player in program history is disappointing. She took over a program that wasn't even a good D3 program, so just about anyone with half a brain could of done better. I've said this before, but a lot of talk and nothing to show. It's a report card business. She has a C- so far. Just my opinion. Soft schedule on average has racked up a lot of wins, but she can't win when it matters. A lot of money that program gets I've heard. A lot. Next year, NCAA....or a bust. Imo.

Many of the Board members are huge supporters of Billiken basketball and large contributors to the program as well. Conran, Sly, Fox, Phoenix, O'Loughlin, Kalsbeek and others attend almost every home game and many go to away games as well. Your implication is way off base.

If this is a board member, he might not want to post stuff on a fan board and definitely not pat himself on the back in his own post! Very Trump-like!  At the very least put your name second or third. Free advice sir....oh and get a publicist!

  9. Board members getting all fired up on a public message board AND posting! Wow. I wonder why SLU is in the shape it currently is today? Geez....I love music but can't play a lick, but I wouldn't pretend to know how to run a music department just because I gave money and attended concerts...but I guess college athletics is different to some of our BoT. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night...

If you really are a board member, don't you agree all board members should have season tickets and support the university's most visible department? Just asking.

Maybe he meant semblance of understanding college athletics and how important it should be at SLU. All the board members should be season ticket holders, its supporting the university at a minimum. I'd like to know what board members aren't season ticket holders, that's terrible if even one isn't.

I’m with you man I really am, but I think you can make your point while not calling women’s basketball a bust, we weren’t even COMPETING before Lisa was hired. I’ll lend you my copy of Gray Seasons on DVD to remind you at how disfunctuonal Shimmy’s tenure was. May wouldn’t have found Lisa if not for Majerus. I think Lisa and the women should be expected to do better but I don’t think you can say her tenure here is a bust. Now if you wanna say that we’re in a women’s basketball conference and that it isn’t giving Lisa the opportunity to succeed then yeah I’m there.

You might be right, a bust could be too extreme. Lisa Stone has made the program better hands down. I'll apologize and own it. The way the department has built that program up, inflated expectations is probably what I am frustrated with. I forgot about the Majerus connection and I believe that is 100% accurate. Does prove my point, if he's not able to make hires without help of Chaifetz, Majerus, WWT guys, what does he do and why do we accept it? I never thought of it that way before and it just got me. Thanks in all seriousness.

  12. I want to know who or whom donated the majority share of the locker room money? I'd love to thank them in person at a game before the end of the season. That whole story is fishy to say the least. The lack of acknowledgement of a major donor or donors is suspicious. I'll leave it at that. Especially after not building anything of significance in ten years. I've been told AD reads these boards religiously. I hope that is true because he knows the real situation and what's true and what isn't. We just speculate, myself included. But, this is a pass/fail, report card business and I'd give May a D+ after 10 years. MBB, sure future looks great, Chaifetz hired Ford. Wbb is a bust, if you want to hang your hat on NIT after all resources given to that program, I got nothing to say. Soccer is irrelevant and we have to pray the 8/9th choice coach is the savior. For record he is a great hire, thank you Jim Kavanaugh. Just look at the report card. Oh and you can even take away S1 and S2...it's still bad. Move on get fresh leadership and more forward thinking AD and staff to help Travis Ford move program forward. Not the stuffed suit that's had ten years to figure it out and hasn't. Let him go to a D3 and high five students with good grades and pour lemonade and eat cookies all day, just get him out of SLU. Please.

Your “insiders” are misinformed. The ADept is constantly teaching and mentoring the student athletes to develop as adults. You are aware that SLU dominates every conference they’re in on academic performance.

The day of  S2 the players were reminded twice not to get off track. You may like or dislike CM, but his commitment to the kids is top notch.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. Maybe you have a great relationship with May. That's fine. My "insiders" paint a totally different picture within that department of what happens on a day to day basis. It's window dressing. After talking to people that work there, I'm convinced the truth will eventually wash out. I hope I'm wrong, for kids sake and university's. But my gut says I'm right. Also....I'm so tired of hearing about academic performance, that's the go to when your on field performance is poor. Good grades should be the standard at a minimum. If I wanted to root for GPA, there is a much better option west, just on the other side of Forest Park in town. That's their job, to get good grades, not a gold star, give us a hug moment.

Look I have no idea what type of warnings they give. I know they have the conversation. To blame May for what 18 year olds do on a Saturday night is a reach. Whatever I did that night was on me not my father or mother. Your expectations of him are unrealistic.

You might be right, it's not Chris May's fault at all. It's Pestello who keeps him in charge of athletics. Chris May is the result of Father wanting a yes man puppet and Pestello having no clue. The perfect storm to stay around 10 years and never be held accountable. Again, amazing how May is never held at fault for anything. Jim Crews, S1, S2, Big East, Soccer program, facilities, fundraising, etc. I could keep going. This is my last post, I'm not changing your minds and you definitely are not changing mine. And that's ok. Have a good night. Thanks

that is an incredible reach to hold any one responsible for S2 beyond the participants.   If you think watching some films attending a stormy lecture and reading a textbook would have prevented that night you seem to me to be one gullible person.

As Willie said above we don't exactly have the budget of a P5 state school and we've seen what kind of administrative support the Athletic Department and the BOT gives.

You want to blame anyone it goes above the Athletic Department.

What??? Does Chris May just hand out towels and do the laundry down there or is he not suppose to be the leader of the department? Resources have nothing to do with educating and setting standards of conduct within any department. Has Dayton or VCU had two high profile sexual assaults within years of one another, under same AD? Not too many places have. All I'm saying is when people that know what's really going on within department say they don't do hardly enough to educate/scare the students into making good responsible decisions that is 100% on AD. I get they are kids, but the lack of accountability is alarming. I'm not implying the players did anything illegal, they were stupid, they are kids. What happened to them is/was terrible and not deserved. Chris May is their leader. If Chris May was CEO of Purina or AB or Express Scripts or Joe's Auto Shop USA and two high profile sexual assault situations arised under his watch there wouldn't be a third, I'll promise you that. It's called being accountable, it usually starts at the top with the leader. Fair or unfair they don't get out of jail cards in real world. Like I said earlier, let's wait until S3 then think about replacing AD....you may love the guy and he could be nicest man since Jesus, but being stupid isn't a very good defense. That's my point, doesn't matter if I like him or not, he's accountable and shouldn't get a free pass.

Look I’m not trying to be a Chris May apologists even though I like him. I’m trying to give some historical prospective. We have had a lot of AD’s at SLU and May is one of the better ones. Would he like to go to a Power Confrense ,probably. Would I like to be CEO of JP Morgan, sure, why not. (Actually no but get my point) Chris May is not our problem.

Who is in charge then??? The students, the cleaning lady, or the usher in my section down there? You being CEO of wherever isn't the same thing as Chris May as AD who is actually in the business and stuck at SLU. So if nobody else wants him, we should? Ok. Think of it this way...if you see children throwing a temper tantrum or disrespecting authority, do you blame the kids or the parents for not parenting? The kids are the result of failed parenting. If the leader of the department is silly enough to not hammer away as much as possible about sexual assault, social media, don't put yourself in bad situations, etc, year after year...after S1 then I don't know what else to say. We can just disagree and wait around for S3.

  17. 3 minutes ago, billiken_roy said:

So you are saying the players are responsible for S2 and may should have been able to prevent That?   Wow.

No. I do not blame Chris May at all for the players actions. I'm saying I believe the department is systemically dysfunctional and from what I've heard from people that are connected is that the basic programming and education about sexual assault was totally lacking over the time between S1 and S2. That is 100% on AD. Who would want to put themselves, students or program in that situation ever again? He was asleep at the wheel. That's poor management and not smart. The actions of the players are a result of not being educated and led. They are kids. Chris May should be the adult. To say he has no ownership and is the AD is unacceptable, first time he got a pass, second time, he needs to go. Do we wait until S3 to maybe do something? That's what he signed up for and gets paid for, not be a helpless victim in all of this.

    Great post willie

Roy, I always respect your posts and insight. I'm sure you've had a much better experience with Chris May over the years. My experience has not been as good and can't support him still being AD. Two sexual assault cases within 5 years gets 99% of ceo's and leaders in real world fired. He's in charge and should be held accountable. Forget that on top of all this he just isn't a very pleasent person, unless you have money or he deems you important. That's a phoney in my book. SLU can do much better IMHO.
