Yeah, this is the thing that bothers me the most.  SLU just came down very hard on 4 basketball players in a highly questionable way and Ortiz's angle is that SLU is in cover up mode in the manner of Baylor, MSU, or Penn State?!?!?

    This....

I very much agree. Clearly, JJdO has established himself as a No Talent Ašš Clown slinging irresponsible opinion pieces sold as fact that will have a negative effect on these young men forever. What a joke of a reporter.

Comparing this to the other schools is so off base. He clearly has no clue as to what happened and to make this connection shows just how stupid he is.

I do believe he is trying to be a villainous/edgy writer playing the dark side but he is only failing and ruining lives. The fact that he glorified a pedophile should give him a permanent seat in the trunk.  What a loser.

Slinging JG’s name through the mud for his betterment through clicks makes me want to puke. Also in reading the chat - he can’t bring himself to admit JG’s acceptance of violating school policy. He is still wording it to sound like a Title IX violation. Just because there is a Title IX investigation doesn’t automatically make you guilty.

Rant over for now....Karma will bite him in the ašš one day....

I also emailed Jose.  I'm sure it's a pointless effort, but I felt it needed to be sent.

    Jose,

I just finished reading your piece on the SLU Title IX investigation and the punishment handed down to Jordan Goodwin along with the other 3 suspended players.  While I knew the level of writing and reporting at the Post had declined in recent years, I had no clue it fell off a cliff.  I continue to be a subscriber to the Post and badly want to support our local newspaper, but this type of article makes it awfully difficult.

The column you wrote is full of non-verified speculation and innuendo, and any additional investigations or research would have resulted in a column with at least some semblance of fairness.  Instead, you took huge leaps in making broad sweeping statements about SLU and about the 4 players involved in the investigation.  You indirectly suggested that the campus is not being made safe by the school because the basketball program allows its players free reign.  Clearly, that’s not the case, as evidenced by an expulsion, two 2-year suspensions, and a third suspension that was reduced because he was cleared of all charges relating to the sexual misconduct.

Comparing the school to Penn State, Baylor, or MSU right now is also disingenuous at best.  There is no clear pattern of abuse or cover-up.  There was one incident and the school has responded with very strong punishments for those involved, including one player, Henriquez, who was expected to be the leading scorer for the team.  Again, any research might’ve allowed you to understand that instead of making the suggestion that Goodwin is only still here because he was the “best player”.

This assumption also shows zero knowledge or understanding of how the Title IX process works and who is making these determinations.  Go find out who the Hearing Officer was that made the initial rulings and ask yourself, “does this seem like someone who is trying to prop up the basketball program.”

At the end of the article, you wrote about accountability. I hope you get a chance to learn that lesson as well.

    Best Regards,

    Steve Schuman

There is a very high level of probability that JJdO will not be able to understand your email due to the fact that it was well-written, contained nuances within a single sentence, and based on facts.

Ill have my third grader translate this to his level and resend.

    Well done.

    My email to ortiz:

I seem to remember you wrote a Goodwin family as the all american family column at the beginning of the season.   Since the situation had already happened, it would seem a good newpaper writer would have already checked out the subjects fit the intended description before that writer wrote such a glowing piece.   Obviously you dont fit the description of good newspaper writer.   There is a HUGE difference between violating Title IX and breaking university rules.   And If all the school was interested was in keeping the star player in school, why was Henriquez who actually was the best player on the team, the first to be shown the door?  Your attack on Coach Ford was beyond defenseless.   My gosh, to insinuate he is just bringing bad character players to the program is so wrong.   But I am sure you checked on the backgrounds of all 4 players in question and found easy proof that they were lacking in character that Coach Ford should have also found right?

And how about questioning the character of the girls that filed a false police report and actually initiated the entire party?   Because the players couldn’t read the mind of the girl who had remorse after the even was over, that was a basis for filing charges?  The police obviously didn’t agree.

Thanks again for reminding me why I dont subscribe to the Post Dispatch.  I hope Saint Louis University, Coach Ford the Goodwins, and the other players sue the hell out of you for this horrible column.   Well unless you would do the right thing and publically and in print apologize for your horrible and unfair work.   I can rest pretty easily that wont happen.

    Ortiz responds within seconds:

    Roy,

Thank you for your thoughts. I’ll gladly forward your email for consideration in our letters to the editor section.

    Have a good day,

Oh the irony of ending the article with "accountability matters in life" yet not taking any accountability to do any real research or find out any real facts.  Just assume these kids are guilty instead of taking his own advice and realizing "a quick Google search" will also turn up hundreds of cases of kids winning against schools for ignoring evidence showing they didn't commit assault or even his own papers article in 2015 showing SLU ignored evidence of a kid who was suspended by SLUs Title IX and was overturned later for ignoring evidence.

But then again that kid wasn't supposed to be "leading the basketball team in scoring" so him being falsely kicked out of school doesn't matter.

    This. Well said.

  5. Just read this piece of ßhit. The fact that someone at the PD clearly failed the vetting process of making sure JJdO is capable of crafting a story exceeding that of a fifth grader should be investigated.

I let my wife read the article without my opinion nor revealing the “author”....

Quoting her - “who in the hell is this lady...she must really hate men”....pretty much sums it up.  Jesus should now be referred to as “Susie”...

The SLU Title IX people have killed my spirit. My life centered around Billiken basketball for so long. Now I haven't been to a game since late November, I only watch games if I have nothing else to do, and I'm even past the point of being upset/interested in this situation. The school botched this situation in so many ways. The 60 day investigation taking 120 days despite having the report after ~90 days. Moving the kids back on campus only to move them out a few days later. The athletic department featuring all the players in a tweet for the first time all season only for them not to play in any games and then an insanely harsh and ridiculous punishment to come down. Now we are well past the appeal process deadline and there is no decision or finality in sight. Pestello has been a coward, the Title IX office has shown zero ability to operate while Kratky is on maternity leave which is a knock on both the Title IX people and Kratky herself. A hearing officer who would qualify as the exact opposite of "free from perceived biases". A biased survey which was clearly set up to get certain answers filled with misspellings and questions that literally forced you to choose a form of sexual assault that you've been a victim of. It's all a joke now.

People can criticize me and others all they want for not coming to games. They can call us fake fans. I don't really care. Anyone who knows me knows that I would have given anything to this program. When I was a student and worked in the athletic department, I would be at the arena before anyone other than the overnight security guards to help get everything set up. I missed Christmases, family events, etc to come to games. I drove 2 hours through an ice storm to watch a Crews coached team lose by 28 at home to George Mason. But this situation has killed my spirit. The Title IX people who are reading this will tell me that the players' decisions killed my spirit but they are wrong. This administration and their handling of this situation killed it. This very same punishment could have come out in November and I would have been pissed off but I also would have rallied around this team and supported them night in and night out. When you add the length of the situation to the complete and utter lack of transparency, combined with the obvious biases and extreme punishments along with the general lack of any kind of common sense and pure lies (survey), the administration has killed my Billiken spirit.

I never donated a lot of money (cheap season tix plus a separate cash donation) so maybe my opinion doesn't matter. I don't know that I'll get tickets next year. I feel like I should because Chris May helped me get my job as a thank you for all the work I did for the athletic department as a student, but the idea of supporting the school sounds terrible to me. I know supporting the AD is different, but I just want to see this school's administration fail in so many ways that the only energy I have left to give to this situation is to find a way to make this administration fail.

Crews tanked the program but Pestello and this administration burned it to the ground. Ford is the right guy to re-rebuild it but I couldn't blame the guy if he was trying to get as far away as possible from this school. Even if we see a complete reversal or significant reduction in punishments, it won't change how this school handled this situation. Hell, if anything, it will tell me that we could have had minimal punishment from the start and we all could have witnessed a special season.

That's the end of my rant. I hope we get a top 4 seed and run through the A10 tournament. But even if we do, I'm afraid that 2 days before the NCAA tournament, the school will decide to make a final decision on the situation and we'll be left without our best player.

This is a pretty good summary...

The inability to make a decision is devastating to many lives. It’s a shame...limbo sounds like a terrible place to be stuck.

I was was privy to a couple conversations recently (this week and about three weeks ago) between Garber and some that draw some serious water in this town and it turns out MLS is not dead. Looking at a private equity deal that will build the stadium and pay the franchise fee as long as the city cooperates on the land deal.

We should hear more in the next six weeks.

    Go Bills!

Since I was one who questioned Billiken Bob when he first said that, I will say I am still confused by it.  Scott Burgess and Earl Austin Jr tweeted it and both are generally reliable.  I believe Pickett even retweeted that he had an offer.  Frank, who has been plugged in recently with recruits (Goodwin and Gordon), said it and talked about SLU having good chance of getting him.

Pelican does have good info so no reason not to trust him on the no offer but that being said, it was just April 18th he posted to expect commitment from JP by end of the week and after that posted about how the visit from Pickett was good and he heard that from both sides but concern was with playing time.  Obviously there were a lot of signs for why it seems he had an offer at least at one point.

I do like the idea of saving one for a 2018 kid though too.

Yep. That was the feeling then; things came up about PT, expectations, etc and they were not on the same wavelength. Amazing what happens when you sitdown and have a discussion in depth about what your expectations are and what is expected of you. Sometimes when the rubber hits the road there is no real traction. Sorry guys... If things change I'll keep you posted.

Next year's class seems to be the new priority at this point.

This post reads very pretentiously, may need to get over yourself just a bit.

I don't question the positional need and I understand how skill development works specifically with bigs, but I don't fully understand adding a transfer with this scholarship. Seems like the need is there now though and if we add a true big in this class the numbers game becomes quite strange a year from now in my opinion. He is a 22 year old sophomore, so one could also question how great the development will be compared to an 18 year old out of high school. I know very little about this guys game, just don't fully understand this one on paper (it's like we are recruiting over someone Ford has signed, but hasn't played yet). That is fine though, no fan should love every decision their program makes and discussion is what this board is for. If he does experience significant development I agree that this makes us a better team on paper in 2018-19 than we were a day ago.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I will do some self reflection.

Would you say Santos was plan A? This is probably the first signing that I am kind of struggling with on paper. Obviously I have not seen much of any of the guys Ford has signed (beyond Goodwin and then Gordon the following class), but this one doesn't make sense to me. It almost looks like an insurance policy on a few of the guys we have lined up on paper for the 2018-2019 season.

We have 2 scholarships available for next season. One scholarship opens up after next season with Roby graduating. With 2 verbal commitments for 2018 it will be interesting to see what we do to fill out the roster for this season. If you add 2 and neither is a grad transfer, you need one transfer out just to not be over committed for 2018.

Santos fills a need and adds diversification in the paint. He also fits the future plan.

Bigs are not linear. Bigs take time to develop and you have to look at this position completely differently than any other position. Here is the upside - he already has the size; the outgoing bigs will never have the size, you can't teach size or develop size. Now, combine this with having him play a year without losing a year of eligibility - development while playing against good players.

When evaluating bigs you look for potential. Paper stats don't mean a ton especially when you are looking at the big picture and the future. The existing bigs were never going to have size. If you want to be successful then you need athletic or sizeable bigs. Bigs are analogous to flipping houses - you look for potential and calculate the effort put in and the return potential in the end.  The price per square foot has to make sense - you can't put too much equity in and there has to be adaquate space or square footage. He fits this equation nicely.

Fair concerns, but prior to this commitment, we only have 2 (maybe 3) guys on the roster who can play the 4 or 5.  At a minimum, we needed depth at the 4/5 spot in a big way.

Size matters at this level. You can be tall but if you don't have some size it's a problem. Also, a guy like this needs some help from the other four which was not really there. This will be a totally different fit and result.

I bet he won't shoot it over the backboard - just some perspective for those that are concerned and worried...

We need @The Pelican to finish unpacking and deliver good news.

    Here is the scoop...

Visit went great and both sides feel this way. I'm hearing this from both sides. PT is the biggest issue at the played position as if will be earned and most likely shared to a decent degree.

The rub is this: do you want to be a part of something special especially with a group of locals (in your front yard) and make a memorable four years with some NCAA runs; or, be a big fish in a small pond (instant starter with tons of PT somewhat close to home).

The staff still feels really good about JP. With 3 to give and plenty of visits coming in there will be slots filled. This will ultimately come down to whether JP wants to be a part of a winner with opportunity to be a main contributor or does he want to be a main contributor with a questionable chance of winner. We will see which is more important to him...
