  1. It looks like eastbound Laclede Ave. will end at 3400 and turn into a walkway to Compton and a no name road on the south side of the Arena will lead to the lot west of it. The P3 garage looks like the best bet to park for games. Does the Bi-State bus run down Compton now or does everyone taking mass transit walk from Grand? I'm planning on being there in 2010 when I attend my 50th SLUH reunion.
  2. from Vandeventer to Compton Aves? In miles/meters, etc. It looks like about a 6 block stroll from the Student Village apts. (3800 W. Pine) to the new Arena (3200) which shouldn't be too far until January 0 windchill night games. Since most of my classes were in Davis-Shaughnessy back in the early 60's and I never went west of Spring, nor was there anything east of Grand, I remember a compact campus. It looks like a bike or skateboard would be a good idea there now. I don't remember anything but shoeleather to get around back then. My Universitas just arrived this week. I guess the nonprofit postage rates puts this class of mail on a slow truck or train to the coast. I enjoyed reading Fr. Biondi's Message and hope he makes it home from Beirut OK.
  3. who is the winningest Mo. HS coach? Could it be Tom Stanton from Beaumont?
  4. I hope you at least enjoyed the fireworks last night as much as I did. I was 6 years old before I found out my folks were fibbing about all the noise was to celebrate my birthday. Let me give you some advise I learned in the last 64 years. You can look at the glass as half empty or half full. I would not complain about what happened to Your People a couple centuries ago when you have your whole life to live. You have every opportunity that anyone living in modern Africa today would love to trade places with you in a minute to be whatever you want to accomplish in life here in the good old USA.
  5. I caddied for him at Algonquin. He was a good tipper. The reason I remember him was the story about winning the Nobel prize. It was a legend at the caddy shack.
  6. familiar with Midwest Airlines? I've never heard of them, but they have the only non-stop between SF and KC. We are coming to my nephew's wedding there in late August. They have 1 flight a day. Will it be a reliable choice, rather than UA or AA?
  7. Todays mail brought a letter from Stephen H. Peterson, Assosiate V.P. - Alumni Relations at SLU offering me a FREE $5 gas card if I call Liberty Mutual for an auto insurance quote! Hey that will buy me about 5 liters of petrol! Can I donate the $5 to the Arena?
  8. Did anyone else on this board go to Easy Ed's summer basketball camp like I did? I came home and taught my 2 little brothers how I was taught to shoot the ball correctly. Both of them were better than me in a few years and got their turn to go to camp. I think Rick even got invited to be a worker bee one summer. All I can remember was playing a lot of hoops with some great coaching the summer of 1957 and meeting a lot of other good players from all over the midwest. I wish the Greatest Billiken all the best from a grateful camper.
  9. Good points, except LS's decision won't be based on IV's future because of the timing, right?
  10. the centennial of the Great Earthquake and Fire. Read about it at www.sfgate.com. I would have put this on the other board if it was up, sorry it does not relate to the Billikens. I just wanted to keep everyone informed.
  11. I enjoyed the history lessons I learned back there. Many of the very antebellum buildings are held together with earthquake bolts after the Great Quake of 1886. The largest ever east of the Misssisssippi River. Tomorrow at 5:18 AM we commemorate the 1906 tragedy here. We are both living on borrowed time.
  12. No golf, just sightseeing and enjoying the hospitality. We enjoyed the spring flowers, then went down to Beaufort for 2 nights, then Savannah for 3 more, with stops at Edisto and Hilton Head. Then back to GA. to visit a friend on Lake Oconee. Alameda is trying to open a west coast naval museum with the carrier Hornet. They are dreaming to someday have as nice a showplace as Patriots Point. Great dining everywhere we went, I tried to let you know on here some time ago, but you didn't answer me.
  13. Did you run across the Cooper River bridge a couple weeks ago? The wife and I were on Isle of Palms for a week and had a great time in the low country. We just got home yesterday, and the sun finally came out here after 40 of the past 45 days raining!!
  14. I'm impressed with their resume.. www.global-spectrum.com check the press release on their site
  15. bring it back, is Ralston Purina interested in the new SLU arena?
  16. also links to interesting bio's of other coaches, maybe best ever at SLU, Eddie Hickey
  17. I think he needs time off. When I was growing in high school I slept almost non stop one summer and came back to school 3 inches taller. I assume IV has stopped that, but will probably be in the weight room a lot, which I never did. This will help him more in todays game. I just started rereading John McPhee's "A Sense of Where You Are" A profile of Bill Bradley at Princeton. It was written 40 years ago and will give all you young folks a good history lesson on what the game was like back then and MO's greatest ever.
  18. Todays TT article in the online PD Brad said IV may have autheriscopic surgery on a knee. Does anyone know any more about this? He plans to stay in SL this summer rather than go home.
  19. Wow, what a career! I've been to Temple's campus on North Broad St. and he is going to be missed by everyone there. It took a tough guy to deal with a tough place like that part of Philly.
  20. count my in for the old look. Althought the Billiken just wore some padded grey sweats that I remember. The 21st century belly should be a more shiney fat suit like you see in the movies now. Put him in some baggy shorts and a home jersey with his name on the back.
  21. I am a long way away and a long time gone, but what I don't understand is since SLU is the ONLY D-1 school in town why they can't get more great recruits. Another class like last year will have them battling for the A-10 title. Then it should get easier to convince local blue chippers to stay home. The Bill's were never MVC contenders when I was there in the early 60's, but still SLU got ALL the good local players then. I know things have changed with ESPN, etc. But here in the Bay Area there are 6 D-1 schools and a lot of smaller JCs and colleges competing for players. SLU ought to do better with less competition, but it seems like they are losing out to the MVC schools for area players from what I read here. I hope that is starting to change.
  22. Is this for basketball or football? I'm confused, why are there 11 names on the first and second teams? I thought you could only play 5 at a time. Is it because a team can be up to 15 players? Then why shorten the list to 11? I can see honoring the guys riding the pine, but this list makes no sense to me. Just pick the best 5!!
