  1. I hate reading these stories but I am very glad you post them for us Bonwich. Nobody lives forever, but some people like Coach Calacchi have left such a great imprint on the people they met that it will seem like their memory will never fade away. I had no idea he had so many degrees, nor did I ever hear about his service record. But it makes sense about the kind of man and teacher he was to know that about him. He would often come to our class reunions just to be around the people he cared about. He was a great man, I wish his family well.
  2. The rest of us fans in the OUTSIDE WORLD have to rely on STLToday and here for our SLU news. The Prez is right, the Cards are NOT a conflict for the kickoff tomorrow night. Would you rather sit in front of a TV or be at West Pine in the flesh? With modern technology to Tivo the playoffs and zip through the commercials it painful to watch TV live now. Go cheer for the 2 Billiken teams: Shimmy & Brad and the kids would appreciate everyone that is there more than you would ever know. Wish I could be there. Hell, free beer would get me to the soccer game too.
  3. I hope it's nice weather the first weekend in Dec. I remember going to the finals at SIU-E in the mid 70's to root the Dons National Champions and it was one of those cold, windy, cut right through you days. I brought a friend from SF along and he about died from hypothermia.
  4. Harris is on the Hot Seat. Stanford is 31pt. underdog to ND tomorrow. We get Cal-Oregon on the ABC game of the week here, but the big game of the weekend is the 2 worst NFL teams Raiders-49ers, someone has to win! I don't follow college soccer much, but I think I remember reading USF and Santa Clara are both better than Cal & Stanford. It will be great to have the NCAA finals at SLU. I'm like most posters, eager for the college hoops season to start. In the meantime, I'll wish for a Cards - A's World Series.
  5. the current score of Nobel laureates affiliated with the schools according to a front page story in todays SF Chronicle. I was intigued by the chart showing winning families since the Nobel Prizes were founded in 1901: Father and Son 6 Married couples 4 Mother, daughter 1 Father, daughter 1 Brothers 1
  6. You Cajuns crack me up!! Mardi Gras on the bus!! Let the good times roll!! I miss New Orleans and want to get down to help their economy sometime soon. Y'all come on out to Stockton on 12/12, I'll be there!!
  7. Is the small brick building across the street from the new arena with the baseball field next to it part of Harris Teachers College or SLU? I remember a similar looking building from years ago as being HTC., but things have changed mucho since I graduated. I wish we could swing the camera around for a 360 degree view and I look forward to the leaves falling off the trees so I can see the site better.
  8. will take over his great, great grandaddy's brewery on 12/1/2006. He has 2 degrees from SLU and 1 from the Berlin Brewmasters U. He may want to put the big eagle sign on the new arena. Who's your Daddy?
  9. The reason the big trees with the big leaves are along Skinker is to knock down errant shots like yours Skip before they hit a car. I remember a bad slice I hit once that wound up across Skinker on the front lawn of a church. I figured it was a miracle, so I played the lie and hit a great middle iron over the trees and back on the fairway and saved the penalty stroke. We were in high school back then and never played the 1st or 18th holes. Thank you Mr. Probstein for the upgrade to the course. And thanks Nark for the link.
  10. I'm glad to hear Forest Park has been renovated. I always thought the hole on art hill was the signature spot in SL before the arch was built. Is the hole along Skinker still 600+ yards par 6? It used to kill me. I remember playing it in the autumn and losing balls in the fairway bacause of all the leaves. We gave up after turning over a hundred or so, dropped a new ball, hit it a few hundred yards further IN THE FAIRWAY and lost it under the leaves! This was in the days before blowers, so I imagine it's not the same now.
  11. the letter to parents under MY BLOG. She should put this in a form that can be printed out for every coach and parent in the world.
  12. Way to go girls & guys. I sense a renewal of spirit. Be sure it continues after losses. That is the true test of a fan(atic) I hope it keeps building for basketball as well Blue Crew
  13. It could have been him, I don't remember. But I did dig up a letter from Michelson Realty Co. who rented us the place for $57.50/mo. complaining "we had caused water to overflow, threw beer cans (empty) out the window and allowed an over-abundance of people to occupy and use the apartment at 4220a Olive St., and in general have used it for everything other than living quarters." Those were indeed the good old days!
  14. I remember your uncles, I had a crash pad at Gaslight Square with 2 other guys who lived at home with parents our senior year. We called it the Key Club, it was upstairs above a joint with a Dixieland band that shook our floor till 2AM. It was convenient for between class breaks and parties. I left SL in '64 so my memory of the concert at SLU you mentioned is pretty hazy. Did they get their name from the Jokers Wild Bar on Big Bend in Maplewood? That was my neighborhood hangout as well as the VFW Post up the hill in Richmond Hts. I remember some good pickers coming in both those places on occasion. Tell them to come out for the weekend. I have met folks from all over the country who come for the music and great vibe. Check out the lineup on the website.
  15. It's time for the world's best FREE bluegrass concert. Make plans to come on Oct. 6-8 for 72 acts on 5 stages in San Francisco http://www.strictlybluegrass.com/
  16. I guess I'm not sorry I missed the soccer game, but will be at the basketball game. Will any other boarders be there? We will root for a better outcome.
  17. The way I heard it he goes from Miami to Austin, and the local call is from South Bend!
  18. that's cheezy 72. The name's Bob, I used to live in Alameda. Next to hoops, VB is my favorite sport. As in most sports, the ladies don't quite have the power that the men do, but big time NCAA WVB is a great game and these are several near elite teams. I guess one of the best in the midwest is now Nebraska! Go figure?
  19. if I were in town I'd get down to West Pine for the WVB this weekend
  20. Larry was a year ahead of me at SLUH and a jr. on the '58 State Champs that went 28-0. I don't remember where he went to college. I wish that I had met his Dad.
  21. Man, the more I read about the media in SL from you guys, the more I thank the fates that I escaped back there. I just returned from my nephew's wedding in KC yesterday and was very impressed with the Plaza, Westport, UMKC campus, and mostly the small party platter at Gates BBQ. That was worth the trip alone.
  22. you mean the Alex G Spanos Center on the OUP campus, near the Amos Alonzo Stagg football stadium? I'll be there for sure. I suggest you read Mr. Spanos biography "Sharing the Wealth"
  23. for the City of St. Louis: World's Fair, Olympic Games, Lewis & Clark Centennial, and the mighty Billiken football team was 11-0!!! I got there 40 years too late!
  24. thanks for those sites Box, I really enjoyed reading the history parts. Is there a site anywhere for the history of SLU football? The first team to use the forward pass!
  25. I figured the map was not exactly drawn to scale, thus the question. One more: does SLU own all the land colored green? I'm especially wondering about the vacant looking eastern end of the Medical Center map. It looks like there is lots of room to grow if so. Also curious if you see many bikes/skateboards around campus?
