  1. I understand some of the concerns about Hunter's efficiency, but when I look at his video, I see some similarities to Conwell. Maybe it's because they have similar size and are both lefties.

Conwell did not have good efficiency his first year either, but greatly improved by playing under Schertz. Perhaps Hunter could do the same in this system. He may not be quite the same scorer as Conwell, but would probably be a better distributor - closer to being a PG.

Agreed, but I think he's closer to being a starter than his numbers show.

I hope so, IMO, it's asking a lot to have a guy go from being barely used this past season to getting 30 minutes a game. I'd feel better if we could find an experienced senior to hand the keys to for one year, while Dotler gets 15-17 mpg in his sophomore year, then he's ready to step up as the starter as a junior.

So if Dotzler and Casey sign as predicted, that still leaves 4 more spots available.

I still hope we find a starting PG and starting 4 in the portal, and then two more HS kids would make sense with the last two spots.

So the starting lineup would look something like this...

    5 - Avila

    4 - Not yet signed

    3- Gibby

    2 - Swope

    1 - Not yet signed

     BENCH

1 - Casey (first big off the bench)

2 - Dotzler (first guard off the bench)

    3- Thames (wing)

    4 - Hughes

    * Then the last four spots in the rotation with HS kids (Pikaar, McCottry + two more) - hopefully one or two of them is good enough to crack the rotation and be a contributor. It's always good to have real competition for PT.

It's fun watching the roster take shape.

Now that Dotzler is official - I want to follow up on this. I hope that Dotzler is not our starting guard - rather he's our first guard off the bench. Considering this is Swope and Gibby's final year, I'd like to see them surrounded with other experienced starting players at the 1 and 4 for their final college go-around. Perhaps a couple of senior transfers.

    McCottry?

Yes, I'm aware of McCottry and Pikaar - that's why I suggested two more freshmen with the remaining scholarships - four total. As I mention - if one or two can break into the rotation great - I just typically don't count on freshmen to make an impact. When they do, it's a nice bonus.

  5. Just throwing out a couple of names - because I know Schertz needs my help with recruiting.

What about Brickus or Brantley from LaSalle? Each very productive A-10 players on a team with a poor supporting class and no bigs - they've never played with a big like Avila.  Both are very similar - good assist totals and can score. Brickus is smaller, but was more efficient, 3rd team A-10 pick. Brantley is bigger and has nice rebounding totals for a guard. Not sure how each plays defense. I think one of these guys could thrive here.

Why would we invite Turnbull to come to campus, give him a tour, and then tell him we are not interested?  That makes no sense.  I know everyone wants to think we can do no wrong right now, but I have to think he turned us down.

Conversely, Turnbull could have been the one who initiated it. He wouldn't have shown up to the meeting if he didn't have some interest in SLU. Maybe the current staff didn't know much about him and wanted to get to know him? There could have been many reasons that either side decided it wasn't  a good fit. Maybe SLU wanted him to wait a bit as they were exploring other bigs. We don't know that he turned us down and we also don't know that he moved on from us.

It doesn't hurt to meet and get to know kids in the era of free agency. Maybe he goes to a place like Evansville, has a productive season and then decides to go to SLU for his final season.

All three could play pg and did at times.

Yes, and Gibby can't. That's the difference. I'm glad Gibby is back and he should be very effective in this system - but the fact that one of the 3 guards doesn't really handle the ball or create much off the bounce, puts a put more emphasis on the need to have more of a ballhandler/distributor - similar to what JLarry did for ISU.

  9. Schertz said two visits on campus today, one tomorrow and two more this weekend. "Hopes to have more good news this week." Went to Salt n Smoke with a recruit last night.

Excited about the 7 on the roster. He figures Gibby, Thames and Hughes are good fits to his system.

Schertz on with Frank - he's like most coaches, he's very optimistic about his recruits - says Pikaar could be A-10 player of the year; says McCottry could play in the NBA if he improves his defense and motor.

Current roster broken out by G/F:

G - Jimerson, Swope, Thames, McCottry, Hughes

    F - Avila, Pikaar

Probably need one more proven guard, ideally someone who can serve as a primary ball-handler. As others have pointed out, Schertz's offense is not reliant on an individual playmaker at the 1, but their PG last year (Larry) did still manage to have 5apg.

Also, definitely need another big to complement/spell Avila and a swingman who is solid on the boards (could be Thames?).

Edit: ACE saying more or less the same thing :)

To this point - I think it will be more important with SLU's roster than it was at ISU to have a ballhandler - because Conwell could create off the dribble his own shot and distribute a lot better than Gibby.

We're trading Gibby for Conwell in the offense. As much as I like Gibby, he can't do some of the things Conwell does.

  11. So we have three starters: Gibby, Cream and Swope

Then: Hughes, Thames, Pikaar, and McCottry.

Am I missing anyone? So, 6 scholarships left.

Looks like we need a 4 (replacing Kent) and a PG (Julian Larry). We need the 4 to be a big time rebounder and a rim protector would be a nice bonus. When I watched them, Kent seemed very valuable tracking down missed 3s and then kicking it back out for more 3 attempts.

Hopefully we're landing some other quality transfers soon now that the roster is taking shape with the additions of Avilla and Swope.

One thing Schertz should be able to sell recruits is his ability to develop players. Look at the improvement from Larry and Kent this last season over the prior year.

The last sentence is an assumption and not a fact.  If it comes true it is more applicable to football.

We don't really know.  SLU hasn't exactly been tearing it up since 1948 before NIL was a thing. So what are we really losing? But we need to find a way to be positioned for what's to come.  College Basketball isn't going away. There will be CBB competition in some form.

For the many posters that don't like NIL and all the money, maybe getting "kicked out of the club" gives them what they want.  Sports without the influence of big money.

I personally want SLU to compete at the highest level it can.  So I'm accepting of the changes and willing to look for ways to exploit the opportunity. If the ACC goes away there's some likely shifts that bring opportunities.

    Nah - another naive take.

Guess you haven't had ESPN for the last 30 years.

Big schools, conferences were already driving everything, NIL or not.

Wrong... more "mid majors" and non football schools were doing better in hoops 30 years ago. There were more opportunities to break through. Now everything is working against mid-major/non football schools. Even the mighty Big East had a lot of disappointment on selection Sunday this past season.

Seems like the market can take care of itself. If it's not sustainable and no one pays there's less money. Pretty simple.

You can choose to donate, not donate, watch, don't watch. Everyone has a choice now even the players.

For every regulation or new law there's unintended consequences and loop holes to be exploited.

If better players stay and don't jump to G League or Europe don't we see better basketball? Seems like the system is rewarding more experienced players and keeping a team together as long as possible. That's why Calipari struggled with a bunch of one and dones when he previously dominated.

But the system makes it nearly impossible to keep a team together for a long time. Keeping a core together for multiple years is becoming a thing of the past. As a result, we're not seeing better basketball.

Question- Pete mentioned on the podcast that he had noticed that the staff under CTF hadn’t done much recruiting activity recently. I would assume that’s about the time that CTF’s assistant coaches came to the conclusion that CTF was a dead man walking, and they needed to start polishing up their resumes. About what time do you think they reached that conclusion? The SIU game? Sometime around then?

Assistants should keep recruiting, building relationships and possible recruits for their next job. I have little doubt Forte was doing it while he was here - recruiting for his next job.

    Well crap

Larry was not expected, so not a big deal - but Kent was.

Is it still hard work being a Billiken fan?

The rumor of 3 seems unlikely. Get Cream! If it drags on beyond Thursday, that would be a bad sign.

Hopefully we get a commitment tomorrow and he can go ahead and cancel that visit to Drake. He had 5 double digit rebounding games in his last 9 games.

Looks like Kent committed to Texas and won’t be visiting this week after all.

    Tool!

I think the fact that we were scheduling recruiting visits with several 4s was a sign.

I'm really intrigued by the kid from Wyoming.
