Portal ranking is tough and so new.  Personally I think 247sports does the best portal coverage.

    https://247sports.com/season/2024-basketball/transferportal/

Regardless, of the ranking nice to see SLU getting top rated talent. It'll translate to some publicity and top 25 mentions.

Also nice to see logical roster construction not last minute take what you can get, then surprise when no one is cleared to play.

-a lot of spots yet to fill but I have confidence your take will become real

Not every team is going to get a 25X increase. If you are a relative nobody team and all of a sudden become a top 25 team, you can expect a large increase.

Same goes for individual players. A player may be getting $20k a year somewhere, have a breakout season and be offered $500k somewhere else the next season. Of course the opposite could be true...a player may have a 200k deal then play poorly or get hurt and next year he is told he'll only be getting 50k or that he should hit the portal. There is a downside for players that don't perform as free agency every year for every player doesn't work out so well if you don't perform up to your contract.

The real question is how much will the entire pot of NIL funds grow each year.  That's the true test of sustainability.

-my mind tells me this is happening, it makes sense to be happening, I would like to hear/see it - no to embarrass or demean the kid but to show some real world aspect of this crazy part of the world

The playoff Vianney vs St. Marys game I attended it didn't seem that way. Luke was able to get to the hole through contact just as much as Zyree. Zyree has a much smoother/cleaner shot than Luke in my opinion. I also don't love the antics Luke displays on the court. Its exhausting. Luke also seems to play more for himself than Zyree. Zyree would excel further than Luke in a collegiate system. Just my 2 pennies

    -Amen to this

St. Mary's is small and had zero rim protection. Walsh can excel against that. He's a very good HS player. I kind of disagree about the shot. I think he has a great shot. I just don't see the size or athleticism or the skill to be a good player in the Atlantic 10. Zyree is a bit of a risk because of his size but he just has so much in his bag and has superb court vision.

I also disagree with Slaten about what it means that SLU "isn't recruiting Zyree." Scherz has been here for five minutes. He's desperately trying to get his roster for next season. I'm sure he'll scour the local ranks and I'd be surprised if he doesn't go after Zyree.

-Yep, Slaten throwing a bomb which history tells me is what he does -- what a crazy take

  4. -I hope all of you who are so happy about GibJim returning understand the game will be different for him as there will be an actual offense, he won't be able to run the weave, there might actually be a proper screen or two set and he shouldn't have to run miles each game trying to get open - - how he reacts to these will be significant to the team's success

It's crazy seeing all the big sports media outlets post about Robbie transfering and asking where is he gonna transfer to. Comments are full of people saying he's going p5 and fans wanting him to come to their school. I'm over here telling everyone he's coming to SLU. I thought since he had that no contact note it was pretty much done. But maybe he just didn't want to be bombarded by everyone. Pretty wild stuff.

We instantly get a solid national following if he comes here.

    -I had the same thought

-not knowing how this all works, how did the Horns get him to Austin for a visit?

On the last @Midtown Madness we did a very quick combination of who we'd keep from each roster and ended up with:

    Avila
    Swope
    Conwell
    Kent

    Larry
    Jimerson
    Thames
    Curcic
    Hughes
    Williford
    Nitu
    Birmingham
    Alderink

The last 4 are signed HS players, Williford to SLU and the other 3 to ISU.

This team would be very expensive but would win the A10. The incoming players and Curcic would be nice values to round out the roster and keep the budget somewhat realistic.

I guess this also means Jaden Schertz would walk on.

I also realize that we wouldn't have much positional depth behind Avila but this was an unplanned exercise.

-I wonder if Thames could be a backup point 5 in CJS's system?

Schertz was a finalist for him at ISU. Re-opened his recruitment today. Could be a coincidence, but probably worth keeping an eye on it.

-get him, how many times will Gus call him by the wrong name?

  8. -listening to the radio yesterday and the host was going through what some cultures believe about an eclipse and the one I thought best fits SLU is one of them believes it is the dawning of a new era, let's hope this era introduced on eclipse day  is very successful

-glad CJS mentioned defense and noted that in conf play this past season they were #1 in the MVC

-sounded like CMay started watching CJS in the 2022-23 season

-CJS listed the positives the SLU job has and I hope the donors start getting a much better return on their investment and a big THANKS to the big donors for making it all happen

  9. -we are Saint Louis University, in the A10, we are not UK, KU or others, my expectation is that every big that comes onto our campus as a frosh will need significant time to become a significant, positive contributor hopefully for their last two seasons

Yep, I have always been concerned that free agency would disproportionately hurt non-P6 schools. I was told by some that with the players transferring "down" from P6 schools, that it would all even out. I kept an open mind to that argument, but my first instinct was correct. There were so many former low and mid-major players playing key roles for P6 teams in the Sweet 16 teams. One of many reasons why there are a dearth of non-P6 at large bids. And then when you get a team like ISU that defies the odds, they get screwed by the dreaded "eye test."

-I would like to see an interview with the Selection Chair and next year's Chair at the F4 and ask with the tournament still fresh what, with the benefit of hindsight, would you change for selecting next year's event -- I would also ask what put UVA in the tourney over ISU given the ~23 difference in NET

-and what sort of post event review they do on their selection process

I like that the national perception is that we are underachieving given our potential.

    ST. LOUIS

    Out : Travis Ford
SLU sacked Ford moments after the team's season ended in the A-10 Tournament. He was there eight seasons and went to one NCAA Tournament. Many in the business believe this program has been an underachiever vs. its potential for decades. With no hire yet, it's only fair to assume SLU is waiting on a coach whose season is still ongoing. Josh Schertz is the presumptive guy here.

-and we have the scars from the self-inflicted wounds to prove the point

  12. -I don't know when all the hob nobbing takes place at the Final Four, but if it is at all of use I hope at the latest on Friday evening CJS is wearing SLU gear on a private jet to Phoenix to do whatever needs to be done which I imagine includes hiring assistants and talking schedule

Blue blood college basketball coaches embezzle thousands of dollars from their schools and then retain their jobs?

They also run a fake mortgage scam for several years buying up a dozen properties to bilk out banks and investors. Also news to me.

I've never heard of a college basketball coach who was an informant for the FBI for several years.

There is no defending Floyd Irons. He is a criminal scumbag.

-I'm starting to think Floyd isn't on your Christmas card list
