Exactly.  I don't like the overly smarmy May but I think May is here to stay so long as the old boy network is happy and the budget isn't fuoked.  This is probably too simplistic but I am looking at this from a dollars and cents point of view.  We know there are a number of big $$ people behind basketball and soccer and those sports are 1 and 2 in revenue generation for the dept. so, on some level, it makes sense that May caters to those 3 programs and those teams get run of the facilities (maybe it is not "fair" but when does that matter in real life).  It would also then make sense that May would run the rest of the sports programs on a shoestring to make the money work.  Now if baseball or track began to generate real revenue or donors, then I am sure May would build a stadium or give them a free breakfast but until then he will let them eat cake like the rest of the "peasant" sports.

Stadium aside (which we really are just asking for stadium seats and a press box in the same setup as now), these non-revs are lacking the absolute bare minimum to match Big East programs. SLU baseball received a donation of brand new led lights from an alumni. It didn’t come with money to install it. May declined to budget the installation or allow crowd funding even though the field didn’t have lights in proper working order. They have to play all day games. The new turf wasn’t even installed til February and there was doubt they’d be able to play home games on campus. They had to bus to the grizzlies field for practice. A donation was on the table to renovate the Softball playing surface but  was apparently rejected by May because he wanted all donations to go to the OCC. He’s consistently taking credit for these programs success while just inexplicably letting them play in sub par conditions. The OCC also does not support all SAs. For instance you have to shower before using the ice bath, but baseball for instance don’t have showers in there

I really don't care about May either way, but if he was good enough for Majerus, and he's good enough for Doc Chaifetz and good enough for Schertz to come here - I'm gonna say he's good enough for me. I think many overestimate his importance in the grand scheme.

I've been saying that for years.  We've got about 30 years of evidence that demonstrates the old boy network runs the show regardless of who the AD is.

My issue with May and everyone else's should go way deeper than a Men's Basketball hire. The arrogance with which he runs the department has created a culture of warped "gratitude" where the student athletes and rank and file employees should be grateful for anything they get. Darin Hendrickson just won his 500th game at SLU and has to fight tooth and nail to get any upgrades to his facility just to bring it on par with the Big East. The Champions Center was built with the promise that all SLU athletes would be able to access free breakfast, that was not true yet is still shown on his SLU profile. Track and Field has a home meet meal for the team in the OCC and athletes had to pay for it. The department is under staffed and overworked and May hides from any confrontation or negativity. I said that my issues go deeper than a men's basketball hire, but that hire put SLU athletics in a major financial bind without an NCAA Tournament apppearance.

I was told 2 months ago that they were comfortable with their NIL for next year.

Things have changed quite a bit. I don't think they understood 2 months ago what they truly needed to be comfortable. Matthew Jakobsze has brought reality to the department on what it takes in NIL.

Here's the thing, even if Schertz did get all these donors riled up to donate and try to meet his "demands", he's motivated boosters to make a financial commitment they weren't previously ready to commit to and thus put the basketball program there in a position to spend on a new coach and or the NIL market.

That thread is getting hot and I'm here to watch that fan base make a$$es out of themselves.  They don't have a clue about the modern college basketball world operates.  It is a business.  Not a single one of them would turn down a job offer in their field that they want Schertz to turn down.  It is just complete ignorance on their part and I regret feeling bad for them during this whole process.

I would have advised Michael not to wade into those waters.

Sycamore board has gotten ugly today but favorite post thus far is from a guy that said" I hope SLU finishes 28-5 next year with a 26 NET and misses the tournament". He then goes on to make the claim that ISU and SLU are equal MM's.

Someone might want to let this guy know he just described Dayton, who earned an at-large bid as a 7 seed. In fact, Dayton had MORE losses and LESS wins than ISU. If SLU finishes the A10 next year with a 28-5 record, they're in the tournament regardless of bid stealers. That's the difference between the MVC and the A10.

I'm waiting til I see Schertz holding a Billiken jersey up before I head over there for some laughs.

I think our new President may have a bit of a different view on May's leadership.  When this person is hired he will hear from the big money people who at the very least will say - keep your eye on him.  This Ford fiasco has wounded him.  You don't get Chaiftz yelling at May in public in Chicago after the L of C game if everything was hunky dory.

Yep. I think Matthew Jakobsze is here to do a little more than NIL.

I have no doubt he did swallow his pride but I can assure you he did not do it voluntarily.  He saw the train was leaving the station and he could be on it or left behind.  If one thing about May is true - people in general, they will survive.  I am not sure we have really disagreed on much lately maybe some nuances but basically we have been on the same page on this matter.  I have tried to respond to this poster with logical and respectful comments.  I see nothing wrong with that and his response to me has been respectful.

Correct. He could also have resigned and retired leaving the department and boosters without a figure head. Kinda where ISU is at. It’s not totally dissimilar to Biondi/Levick dynamic.

I doubt May is driving this bus.  Chaiftz and others pulled this off.  There is evidence that someone else's fingerprints are all over this situation.  May's MO is to drag it out and take a very deliberate and slow decision making approach.  This moved with lightening speed.

You and I have disagreed lately, but don't feed this troll.

Again, I think the way CM has ran the department culturally speaking is below average at best. He deserves a bit of credit for swallowing his pride and realizing he's not the smartest in the room.

ISU fans not far off. SLU annual tuition is now $50,000, the Fetz is a half-empty morgue, few students attend ... and for good reason, the team stinks.

I am once again asking why a school that hasn’t been to an NCAA tournament  since 2011 is making fun of our basketball history.

It’s pretty funny to read the comments.  Enjoy this doozy…

During the Spoonhower days and to a lesser extent when Majerus coached there, there was moderate interest in the program. During the Spoonhower tenure they were playing in the Enterprise Center and had really good attendence, and that was partly because Charlie was a folk hero of sorts. But other than that the interest is average at best. If HCJS makes the move it will be because of the money. When the SLU rich kids get bored, Biff and Buffy will drive their BMW down to the lake for the weekend.

This guy hasn't seen a movie since Grease.

Thanks. I noticed that too. After I bought my (one) ticket, I noticed the option was gone and like I said, there were only 10 left when I started my order.

If you click on the actual seating chart for the floor seats, it comes back as  an error or unable to proceed or something like that. Cool! Hope that's the case.

    I bought two.

It does seem a little nitpicky to me. Posters on here have been confidently posting for weeks that Schertz has already decided to come to SLU. I haven't had the chance to listen to your podcast in the last couple of weeks (sorry!) but I suspect you and Pete have said similar. Apologies if I'm wrong about that.

So posters and podcasters are allowed to speculate that Schertz is coming to SLU. But Frank on 590 isn't allowed to say something similar?

I think it's the tone and general level of certainty to go along with the timing of it with the Schertz tweet yesterday. Feels braggy moreso than reporting, but again that's probably nitpicky and I acknowledge that. I understand where you're coming from though. I have more or less said I predict that it will be Schertz and all signs point to Schertz being the guy but stopped short of saying that it is a foregone conclusion.
