  1. the Bruins are looking very impressive leading the Huskies 47 - 33 at the half. But I think UNC is better right now, after watching several of their games. The whole Pac 10 is very competitive this year, so I'm pretty sure UCLA will lose a few games. I liked the way Oregon looked yesterday at OSU in Corvalles.
  2. Bills are favored by 5 1/2. I hope I can find a bar out here to watch the game.
  3. Has anyone else noticed Luke's striking resemblence to John Havlichek? Mr. 6th man of all those great Celtic teams the STL Hawks could never beat. I love LM's guts & blue collar game, but I'm sure BS knows he'd be a way bigger help to the team to be our Hondo if we had a decent 4 to start. Give us that & Brad starts lighting stogies on the bench, he'd be so happy.
  4. for college hoops fans in St. Louis had @ 50,000 folks spin the Scottrade turnstiles. I wonder how many went to all 3 games last week? I would say they got their $$$ worth. I was able to see 2 of the games on the tube, how many of you guys made it to all 3? I'm preaching to the choir here, but I'll bet the Bills picked up some more fans, especially by selling the 4 game package. It could get noisier when the conference season starts.
  5. I wish STLtoday.com did that for us like that. I know they do a few. Oh well I shouldn't complain on Christmas Eve.
  6. I wish that I'd known about the game, I'd have been there. What's with starting at 11 AM? Have a nice Holiday back home and I'll talk to you next year.
  7. Is Mannys that dive on King St.? I enjoyed a lunch at the branch in Mt. Pleasant which is newer. But the old place looked too scary to eat at. We also had a nice Greek lunch in Port Royal across the road from the VA Hospital. IV flushed a few tonight, so you must have enjoyed the game.
  8. I watched at a bar with no sound. I think we just wore out in the second half. It would have been much different if we hit some 3's. I'd like to see the chart of their made/missed shots and ours. We are deadly from 12 feet in, dead beyond 12 ft. I wish more games were on TV out here, this is a fun team to root for.
  9. Doc, come on up to Santa Rosa and meet me at the Third Street Alehouse where we will be having dinner and some fresh brews and Sonoma County wines (my wife does not drink my 2 favorite beverages, beer & coffee. I also drink wine & tea with her sometimes) She ia a Billikan fan after seeing the great comeback against UOP last week. I have some left over Billiken buttons to give the staff at the Alehouse.
  10. The Canyon Cowboys won the greatest game in their history tonight 27 -13!
  11. In high school basketball there are 5 divisions in CA. The best example of a small school moving up to play tougher competition was when tiny St. Joseph-Notre Dame of Alameda had Jason Kidd. They were class 5 in enrollment and moved all the way up to class 1 and won both his Jr. & Sr. years against huge So. Cal. schools. The finals were played at Arco Arena in Sacramento on a totally neutral court. I loved watching SJND battle DLS back then. The Spartans warm up was great when they finished up by belly flopping around the center circle on a dead run and sliding together to all join hands!
  12. Marc Tyler has rushed for 123 TD's and injured his knee in the first playoff game. His replacement, also USC bound safety Marshall Jones stepped into the backfield and has rushed for 305 yds, 7 TDs in 3 games! He's 6'1", 188 lbs, has run 100 meters in 10.6!! Not much difference. Oaks is the #2 ranked team in CA. and should play #1 DLS, not poor little Newman. I voted against the train because of the outrageous price tag. I'm retired now and can drive non commute times and don't need any more taxes. My property tax here is already over $10K/yr.
  13. heard of this? The California State High School Football Championship games will be played in LA for the first time since 1927. There are 1,433 high schools in the state now and it had grown too big. But this year a North vs. South 3 size format puts 3 Bay Area schools against 3 LA area schools. The small division features little Catholic Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa where I live against mighty Oaks Christian-Westlake Villiage. The Oaks team has ELEVEN D-1 PROSPECTS!! There are only about 100 senior boys in the school which is only 7 years old. QB Jimmy Clausen has committed to Notre Dame, 2 teammates to USC, 2 to Oregon, 1 to Florida, 1 to Texas A&M, etc. People wish they would bid up to play DeLaSalle, the large school champ, who is ranked #1 in the USA. All 3 games will be on statewide TV tomorrrow, starting at 11AM
  14. I brought home with me last night shows UOP's bench scored 18 pts. they played 10 guys. We scored 2 bench points. It was very memorable. After DB threw up an air ball that missed by a foot from the far corner, they left him open in the near corner, right in front of our bench. He launched another 3 attempt and hit the side of the backboard this time. He went around his man, got the rebound and laid it in. I thought it was a clever play to pass it to himself for a closer shot. Our 3 subs only played 39 minutes. TL played 36, KL - 34, IV -32, DP - 30, and LM - 29 minutes. They really sucked it up and defended in the seecond half UOP shot 58.6% in the first half and only 20% in the second. Congradulations to those brave fans that bet on the Billikens!
  15. after arriving home late last night after a near 200 mile round trip to the alumni party and game. I really enjoyed meeting Jim Dailey, who played for SLU from 58 to 60. He was from Joplin and still is at his playing weight of 160 lbs. He lives in Fresno now and told me it has been 40 years since he has seen the Bills play in person. He & several teammates have bought 3 bricks. He was a very nice guy when I told him, Wow, you guarded Oscar Robertson! He said nobody guarded the Big O. He said he was not only the best offensive player he ever saw but also the best defender. He gets back to Joplin and KC where his daughter lives and also visits SL and was there in October. It was also nice to meet Earl Austin, Jr. & Bob Ramsey after they finished working the game. By the way the game was great. We saw some players and I asked them what the coach said at halftime to make them look like a different bunch, and they said "nothing much" which really puzzeled me. Then I read that #5 Johnson hurt his back in the second half and still played 30 mins but Kevin played him tough and he didn't score after intermission. By the way we all agreed the "Qwick Change" halftime show was sensational. I was impressed with IV, except for his behind the back pass, 1 of 5 TOs. He has a nice touch with both hands, but looks a little slow afoot. Only 8 guys played, the end of the bench handles the 6 stools for time outs. Things at SLU will change big time when the new gym is built. Stockton's richest citizen A. G. Spanos helped pay for the Tigers home and several other buildings on a pretty campus in a crummy town. My attorney friend who went to the UOP law school in Sacramento says the private undergrad is not that well regarded academically, but has a finishing school reputation, and very high tuition. It was a great night meeting new friends, other posters like Bay Area Bill, and a win. We all agreed with our hostess Meg, from the alumni office we want more games in the Bay Area. There are 6 D1 teams here for the Bills to schedule, though Brad probably doesn't want to play his old friend Randy at SMC. I'm looking for a place to watch the UNC game on TV out here if my Comcast cable doesn't put it on.
  16. after going down to Santa Clara 67-49 last night at home. It was their worst home loss in 15 seasons. So far this year the Tigers have beat Cal St.-Bakersfield, UMKC & USF. They should be ripe for a win for the Billikens on tuesday.
  17. recent history: Justin Love - he used to light up the summer pro-am league in San Francisco. He was MVP one year when his team went undefeated. ancient history: Tom Kieffer - as a Jr. Bill he led SLUH to a 28-0 Class L championship in 1958. He wasn't the same after getting beaned by a golf ball driven by Bevo Nordman and spending the whole summer in the hospital. He was very lucky he was not killed. Bevo was like 6' 10'' and 270lbs. I saw him throw the shot and discus prodigious distances in HS, but never saw him play golf. He was so huge he could probably putt farther than I could drive it. Tom's OK and I recently heard he's still playing hoops in SL. Does anyone playing in an old guys leauge know for sure?
  18. I'll be there with my sweet wife, Paulena. I look forward to getting together with you and other alums & fans at the party. I got a chuckle out of the postcard that came last week. Stockton is 80 miles east of San Francisco and 90 miles from my house in Kenwood. It said "the Billikens are headed back to San Francisco!" I'm excited to see the team after reading posts here.
  19. and I expect the same or less in Column 2, looking at the home & away schedule. It's too early to get to Column 3 for me. Sounds like a Chineese menu, but I'm looking at the bottom of this screen.
  20. I assume the UOP game ended too late for your papers so I'll summerize Bruce Adams article in today's SF Chronicle. "The Tigers, taking full advantage (of poor D) and leading comfortably most of the way, sent the Dons home with a 79-72 loss. Guard Steffan Johnson led UOP with 23 points and center Michael White added 15, all in the seecond half. USF coach Evans said "They ran their offense pretty well, and they felt comfortable at home." Pacific came into the game fresh from the Great Alaska Shootout, where the Tigers were 1-2, beating UMKC and losing to Loyola Marymount (LA) and Hawaii." In the box score I noticed USF had 25 fouls and UOP 13, and 32 rebounds compared to USF's 22. Attendance was 3,393
  21. That's the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs, my local team near here. They have a great football & baseball program, not as good hoops. Admission to all games is $1!!! When I lived in Alameda, it was St. Joseph's High School. Jason Kidd's Alma Mater with 200 students, won the large school state championship his jr. & sr. years against huge LA schools. He was the best HS player I ever saw since I played against Bill Bradley. We are looking forward to seeing the Bills here on 12/12
  22. Great minute by minute article by TT. Please give us a report after the Il game Skip. I am a fan of Shimmy. My favorite quote was "I was a cop at 23" That's a special lady.
  23. compared to years ago. I just picked up the 2 volume DiMaggio Albums at a used book store. It contains almost every newspaper and magazine article written about Joe and his brothers from 1932 to 1951. The photos are phenomenal and why I originally bought it, but in reading the writing I am astounded at the quality of the work. It is indeed a lost art. There are several Bob Broeg stories in the book. Anyone remember him at the P-D?
  24. and us far flung Billiken fans are looking forward to eyewitness reports from you locals who will be at tonights games. (plural) I for one would like to hear how the ladies look under their new coach. It would be cool if a lot of you got to Saavis in time to check out at least the 2nd half of the ladies game. That's what I would do if I was there. I just got my Universitas with a nice feature story on coach Gray-Miller, and from the positive comments I read here about her I'm curious what you think about her team. I also see there will be a pre-game alumni party before the UOP game on 12/12. Go Bills!
