Even casual mbb fans knew Jim Crews’ reputation, great coach, terrible recruiter. Travis Ford was known as a great recruiter, bad in game coach, couldn’t maximize talent. Yet, who hired both of them and handed out millions of dollars? Chris May. He does not deserve the right or has the trust to hire his 3rd head mbb coach at slu. Honestly he should’ve been let go when slu didn’t go to the BE. It was Chris May who dropped the ball, not Father Biondi. Biondi was a convenient scapegoat to blame at that time. Dr. Oberle might be departments biggest cheerleader and a wonderful person but that doesn’t give her a pass and lifetime job like a Supreme Court judge. She’s only worked at SLU, what other experience or fresh perspectives does she bring to the table that’s so special other than staying at slu entire career? Soccer, baseball, softball, track, etc hope they all do wonderful but at end of the day can anyone tell me how good Gonzaga women’s soccer team is or how good was Creighton softball team last year? Not many I would imagine. Because all that matters is mbb at those schools which I hope slu wants to become. I’m not putting down any other sports at slu, but I’d trade women’s and men’s soccer success for a mbb program like Creighton or Gonzaga. Most would too. I get you can do multiple things all at once, just trying to point out the obvious, mbb is the most important program at slu. Need fresh leadership, department is stale, have to have new people working NIL and 100% new AD hiring a new coach or else SLU falls even further behind in D1 mbb. Maybe to the point of no coming back. Almost 20 years as an AD at one school is impressive but time to turn page, thanks for everything Mr. May, best of luck. SLU can and should do better. Fans and donors deserve it.

IF mbb does well, everyone does well, opposite can’t be the same, look at it that way strictly from a revenue standpoint if anything above all else.

Good post. Only disagreement with it is Jim Crews being a great coach. I still get PTSD flashbacks of Yarbourgh doing his

'coast to coast' and then getting jammed. I maybe way off on this but wasn't it Bondi did not want to spend the the NBE entrance fees to get into BE back in 2012 but it should been May's job to sell it and explain the huge potential of being in that league. We also blew the opportunity to get in the old BE back in 2006.

We had great ADs in the past with Yow and Albus. They had the insight of the time and knew how to think out of the box. But unlike today, they worked with very little support and resources making their results more impactful. We need to replace May with someone at that level.

coach kinght at commissioners tournament at the arena in st.louis in 1974 is one of my favorite memories he did not want to be there got thrown out of second game after indiana won when he accepted the trophy he told them what they could do with it he wanted to be in new york at the NIT the look on their faces was priceless that tournament was a bad idea lasted one more year we were in the vallay than and Bradley played here wonder if any of you were there

I was in attendance. Recall also the year before IU was in the NCAAs. Attended those also. If you recall Memphis was in the finals. A few weeks prior we blew out Memphis at the Old Kiel. Shame that team was not selected for the NIT.

What we may not know is how much people switching to streaming services have impacted who has access to the games.  For the casual fan they won't pay extra but for some they will.  However, your point is worth pondering.

Yea but just the previous year (Kansas-UNC-two of the glamour blue blood schools) was one of the highest.

I would think that your average casual fan, who maybe watches 1 or 2 games during regular season wants to watch a team he recognizes or reads about.

  4. Looks like nice weather for this evening game against Lipscomb here in Nashville. Sunny and in the high 70s. I was worried because the weather here has been brutally hot with deluge thunderstorms in the late afternoon.

Plan on making it up to the game. Been awhile since I seen the Bills play soccer. I seen them play at Charlotte many times and in a tourney at Furman but those were years ago.

    Yeah they know the #s.

I've been a big fan of Josh Pate "Late Kick" (YouTube and podcast).  He's said (which he may have gotten from an Athletic article) that the networks are running all this change and the fans they need are not the father son going to every home game in Corvallis OR and know everything and watch any game even if it's they're team vs NW Boone County PolyTech.  No it's the casuals in Brooklyn that will tune in for at least an hour if they recognize the schools.  Sadly there's more casual than die hards.   Also he's stated that the true fan backlash to all this is being noticed.

I think UCONN and Zags were a fallback if the 4 corners schools didn't all move to B12.

Sure, the networks don't want to have something like this:

One way that mid majors may be able to stave off a complete takeover of college hoops by the P5 or P6 is to come up with a coast to coast mid major super conf. Say 3 divisions: Wesr, MidW, and East made up of 8 teams each. Off the top of my head I could see the following make up of each division assuming factors such as tradition, mkt size, faculties.

West: Zaga, St Mary’s, USF, UNLV, Boise, SDS, NMS, Utah St

Midwest: SLU, UD, Loyola, Belmont, Murray St,, Drake, WSU, Memphis or Tulane

East: UMass, URI, VCU, Davidson, Duquesne, St B’s, Fordham, CofC

This set up would be a good mix of successful mid programs in mostly major TV markets. Actually, a mix of teams that would rival the Beast in quality hoops.
As for the conf tournament only the top 16 teams based on RPI/Sagarin  or some league devised ranking system get invites.
Now all we need is an enterprising commissioner to put it together.

We need someone with wisdom, drive and connections of a Yow or Albus. Unfortunately May is not it.

The Billiken sculpture stays, the new construction doesn’t extend that far.

Good. Since I am fan from out-of-town, I only make it to about 2 home games a year.

It has been my custom when entering the Chaifetz to scratch the Billiken belly for a win. Worked about 80% of the time 😛

  8. 7 hours ago, Lord Elrond said:

It’s actually connected to Chaifetz. Look at google earth, you will see a triangle area of grass to the northwest of Chaifetz Arena. It’s going there, in that triangle, basically connected to the pavillion area of Chaifetz (the square extension off of Chaifetz) on one side, the walking path on the other, and the parking lot on the third side of the triangle. Those are roughly the outlines of the footprint of the new construction.

So it is right by the Billiken sculpture? Or does that go?

Those college bands have 40,000 undergraduates on the mean to choose from. We do not have that luxury.

In addition, we don't have a large music department. Also, scholarships are offered to band members based on how they did in HS band.

Neither did Gussie Busch, and yet the student center is named after him.

Local corporations usually give to the local university. Monsanto Hall-the chemistry hall & McDonnell Douglas (which was around when the building was built) Hall-Parks College.

I seem to recall when I arrived at SLU, the Busch Student Center building was only a few years old. During my junior year (72-3) the administration finally relented and they opened a bar serving adult beverages. It was stipulated when building the Student Center, if they opened a bar, the beers had to be A-B products. They did.

Here is the official announcement of their top ranked recruiting class:

Interesting, several transfers from other A10 schools. Also, a number of international commitments.

I will be at the Lipscomb game in Nashville end of August, will how they blend in.

Lipscomb will be no push-over. I see last years RPI had them at 13th. SLU was 23.

JAG really took off against SLU when Peyton Aldridge left. He didn't do much before that. He had one really big game against us. Aldridge is a stronger overall case, though.

Agree, Peyton always seemed to have way with us, especially away in Davidson which I was able to witness.

I just recall that Davidson game because it was one we should have won. Another sad part was it was one of our better attended games with almost 9400 in attendance.

JAG in that game seemed to not miss by dumping 27 pts on us with a .750 FG %.

There are many different ways to win.  Not all the ways maybe open to an A10 team in the Midwest with limited basketball success.  But there is a way, I think $2.4mil/year is more than fair compensation to figure that out.

Just off the top off my head:

1.zig when others zag, go with a unique system that is hard for other teams to prepare for, ie Princeton offense and go all in on smart players that might value education and not be the most athletic.

    2. Moneyball, go all in on analytics hire a nerd to crunch #s on players, sets that'll give you that .08 ppg bump where the sum is greater than the parts.

    3. International focus

    4. Find diamonds in the rough,  Develop talent, run your system well.

    5. 2nd chance U. Need a strong culture to bring in difference makers that may have past issues.

    Etc.

Easier said than done, I know but damn, years of experience,  good resources, good location,  adequate support should be able go hit every 5 years or so. We need something to cheer for

I agree with one addition, you need a good x & o coach.

Every year you find a St Peter's, Loyola-C, Butler, GMU, VCU, etc advancing deep in the Tourney.

Coaches of those schools all bolted after the success. We, obviously have the resources to find such a coach.

I'm a positive solution person Steve. So, I will make you an offer: I will do my best to treat you and all others here with the same equal respect that I would equally seek from from you and all others. What do you say Steve? Deal?

Please allow me to respectfully respond to your post as there is an awful lot to it. Thanks.

As for a response to your above post:

First, there seems to be some confusion. No one is on a tirade. This couldn't be more calm and matter of fact. Maybe don't read tone that isn't there. And with regards to cluttering the board, my posts are in respone to yours. I'm pretty sure I post on topic in threads as much as many people here. Minus the coffee thread which I still at least mentioned.

I didn't need a discussion with you, nor did I request one. I didn't need or want or ask you to take action of any kind this week. I did think it was okay for me to provide a timely plagiarism example in response to your post about plagiarsm. That seems fair.

You made yourself clear about the topic and its unimportance to you long ago. I didn't forget, but that doesn't mean I hold the same opinion as you about it. It's still okay to have different opinions about the importance of plagiarism and the like, yes?

With regards to stirring the pot, respectfully, I think you have it backwards Steve. I think the people plagiarizing stir the pot first by doing just that. Then you continued to stir the pot in this thread by trying to make a plagiarism joke. It isn't the first time either to be fair. Holding people accountable for it is not stirring the pot in my opinion. I am not the one who brings it up periodically. But I don't mind that it gets brought up periodically here by some others, because if it wasn't true it would have been laughed away in minutes years ago. (By the way fyi, copying and pasting someone else's work without credit is also plagiarizing.)

In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you are the janitor at the company or if you are the President of the company. Everyone is held to the same standards, and everyone is worthy of the same equal level of respect. That seems simple enough.

With regards to the actual example, of course you and a few others don't want to discuss the specifics in this specific example. People often ask for specific examples in real time, but when taken up on the offer, then it's either crickets, who cares, levity, avoidance, etc... Each person can pick out his or her category in my above post.

You mentioned volunteering. To me plagiarizing is even worse when it is done to people who are kindly volunteering their time and information to benefit others. It isn't any different if a student plagiarized in one of your classes. It's the exact same thing if an Elections class political science student wrote a paper, and another student stole it and turned it in as their own. Ethics and decency aren't situational, at least not to me. There also isn't a hierarchy to their value. At least, not to me. I believe this is where we differ most.

It's also interesting that you have these conversations with other posters. That would have been easy to do with me as well. But not once since I have been here all of these years have you ever reached out to me privately for a conversation or discussion about any topic, good, bad, indifferent. And not once have you ever replied in the very infrequent times I have ever reached out to you in all these years. Otherwise we could have also more productively done that instead.

It isn't in any way hurting the soccer programs, or any of the other programs I discuss here when plagiarism is revealed. Gotta say I found that comment odd. Unsurprisingly many of these people connected with these programs also aren't fans of plagiarism and the like. At least that's what they tell me privately. It's also what other readers of the board tell me privately too. (Much of my time here is spent in private messages.) I don't post about plagiarism in the sports teams threads. With the exception of the recent coffee thread, I post mostly on topic in any thread. But again in that example, I replied to your post.

It's your board Steve. You get to do whatever you want with it. I'm happy to work with you. I am not going to compromise my values just because it's your site. But I'm willing to work with you for a solution if something is bothering you. I'm pretty comfortable with how I post, and with how I treat others here, both on the public board, and privately. Most of it is volunteering my work and info here for others to enjoy. It's like how the old saying goes, treat all others the same, and treat all others how you wish to be treated. That seems to work for me.

Maybe come to a practice, or a training, or a game, or on the road recruiting, or hang with the players, coaches, staffs some time, in a variety of Women's and Men's sports. I only get the chance to share a small, tiny part of it all. So many fun and exciting things are going on out there. There is no offseason. There are SLU sports in every season. I'm here for all of the SLU Women and Men's sports.

So what do you say Steve, I will treat you and all others here with the same equal respect that I would seek for myself. Deal? Seems fair.

I'm happy to move on with coffee talk in this thread, and sports talk in sports threads.

Does that mean Harriman is that good, or that we are that desperate?

Also the commitment Stef would have to give to SLU is not what it used to be.

If he does not like playing at SLU, after the end year his name will be in the portal. No big loss on his part.
