  1. father biondi said it was not a matter of bad investments, just the same drop in the stock market that everyone else lost out on after 9/11.
  2. father biondi told us at an alumni lucheon the day my son went to slu last month that notre dame is the richest catholic school in the nation with a fund balance approaching like $2 billion dollars! boston college and slu are the 2nd and 3rd ranked funds and bc has a little less than 1 billion and slu has like 600 million. i.e. notre dame has WAY more.
  3. in the old days, we used to debate whether the shoemaker center in cincy was an idea facility to model an "if i could build it it would be" facility on campus. i constantly noted that the shoemaker center only had two restrooms. one on either side and when the place was packed it was hard to even go to the john.
  4. i agree with willie, if we dont include offices and practice courts all we have done is avoid paying bill laurie rent and made it easier for the students (who virtually get free tickets anyway) to come to the games. no way i spend tens of millions of dollars for that. do it right or dont do it.
  5. all mascots pale in comparison to "the billiken". thus a tree, or a wave or a ocean tide would seem silly. the sad fact of mascots, is we have one of if not the best and it isnt taken advantage of in marketing the team.
  6. i agree with bonwich. maybe crossing the taste barrier, but anything but moronic. i remember seeing the stanford band at one of the ncaa regionals that were in st louis and i was stunned, but entertained. i now smile every time i just see the words "stanford band".
  7. i believe tomorrow nite is the first billiken club meeting of the year. unfortunately, i cannot attend. my daughter has become a very good fast pitch softball pitcher for her age and has a game tomorrow nite, thus i will be attending that. if anyone attends the tipoff club meeting, i hope you report back to the board. remember all, brad cannot talk about lisch or liddell at the meetings. however he could talk in generalities about recruiting. find out if he thinks the billikens will sign a specific number of players in the fall. also, i assume someone will want to advise us on the progress of the biondidome?
  8. i agree with the tone of billiken butch's post. i respect the individual's religious belief, but unfortunately, i dont see why the world has to conform to that one person. i.e. if he/she deems it outside of their own belief to participate as the others do, then that person chooses to not play, not make the game confirm to them. i hope doug and the ncaa stick to their guns and not allow this to become a sideshow and a platform for some crazy zealot stunt.
  9. that is nuts. if i was doug, that would be enough to make me quit.
  10. actually, we are normally picked to finish near the bottom, so middle of the pack is a mark of new respect imo.
  11. assuming you are a billiken club member, i believe there is a planned event. contact margo at the slu athletic office.
  12. the news about carlos is fantastic and worthy of applause. great job!
  13. harris was a pure power forward. there was nothing about jeff harris that led anyone to believe he would ever play a wing, guard a wing, shoot 3's etc. newborne does all that supposedly. i do not see newborne as any kind of a comparison to dobbs or harris.
  14. while i too an tired of waiting, we have all seen glimpes of incredible play by izik. the question is why is it so infrequent? why does he disappear? he is more than the athlete that we need. why cant he be motivated to do it all the time? izik and newborne are the keys to this team imo.
  15. dillard averaged about 6 rebounds pg while a billiken and had a nose for scoring. plus surely everyone can remember his enthusiasm and leadership on the floor.
  16. it sounds like we have the reincarnation of quitman dillard in newborne. imo that is a good thing. dillard was one of my favorite billikens.
  17. not sure i want the world to "discover" dustin maguire yet. the shootout could be a launching pad for him as every assistant coach in the country is there.
  18. i also see more of a willingness to rebound and defend the bigger players than what slaten did in high school.
  19. got this off of bullseye's site. bullseye really does a good job on keeping his eye on illinois recruiting, especially chicago. the interesting announcement here is wes matthews team is invited. matthews is marquette's top recruit for next year. i would love to see matthews and lisch go head to head. the bethalto team being invited is of interest. junior to be, dustin macguire might be a player that could play for the billikens and i am anxious to see him go up against a top team. here is bullseye's report: "More Teams Announced For St. Louis Shootout September 8, 2004 9:30 A.M. CST This year's St. Louis Shootout will be headlined by a strong contingent of teams from the state of Illinois. Three more teams were recently added to the field, including Homewood-Flossmoor, Glenbrook North, and Bethalto Civic Memorial. Needless to say, this also means that the shootout will feature plenty of individual talent. With the addition of Homewood-Flossmoor and Glenbrook North, this means that Illinois will have the top players in both the class of 2005 and 2006 represented at the event. Of course we are talking about 6'7 Julian Wright from Homewood-Flossmoor, who ranks as the top senior in Illinois, and 6'5 Jon Scheyer from Glenbrook North, who is the top junior in the state. Other teams that were announced are Madison Memorial in Madison, WI and Francis Howell Central in St. Charles, MO. Other top players include 6'5 Wes Matthews from Madison Memorial, who will be attending Marquette , 6'5 Dustin Maguire from Bethalto Civic Memorial, and 6'0 Justin Fuehrmeyer from Francis Howell Central. The rest of the field as well as game pairings will be announced at a later date. The St. Louis Shootout will be played on December 9 at the Savis Center in St. Louis. Continue to check in with Illinois Prep Bulls-eye for all of the latest as it pertains to Illinois high school basketball."
  20. johnson stayed in st louis i believe over the summer and went to school. i know he was assisting at brad's camps. if justin isnt being mentioned in the workout reports, i would take that to mean he is studying which is not a bad thing.
  21. tseugnekillib has pointed out a number of times, that one of these inside players besides frericks has to set some picks. while newborne has shown some scoring skills that i didnt expect, either him or izik or ian or jj someone has to be willing to throw their body around a little bit. it might end up deciding who is on the floor.
  22. i especially like the continued good reports on newborne. play him at the 3 and play izik at the 4. i think they would definitely create some matchup problems with their versatility.
  23. as a billiken club member, they e-mailed me the schedule a few weeks back and i had printed that out then. when i read your e-mail, i was surprised to see that information wasnt on the slubillikens.com site or even the stltoday.com billiken link. here is what i got on times: 2004-05 SAINT LOUIS MEN'S SCHEDULE (All Times are Central and Subject to Change) DATE OPPONENT SITE TIME November FRI. 5 UMSL (Exh.)
