Billikan Posted January 29, 2004 Share Posted January 29, 2004 No matter how you slice it this team is very good but may not be quite good enough. With another close loss we seem to be snakebit! Big things in tonight's game: 1. I love chris Sloan to death but he was a big reason why we lost this game. He could not handle the forwards on defense and he had a terrible game offensively. he missed 3 wide open 3 point shots. But no player can be great every night. 2. Drejaj had a terrible game offensively with 4 turnovers, an airball on a long shot and the killer pass that gave them the game. On defense he was absolutely magnificent--he was in the face of Plavich on every shot when he was guarding him. 3. Tom did not have a good game on offense.with 4 turnovers including a terrible blind pass to nowhere near the end when we were closing the gap. 4. Reggie was 0 for 7 from 3 point range and at least 4 of those were clean looks. what a shame that the planets seemed to align to have us start great on the offensive end and then go cold as ice with many turnovers in the second half. 5. Fisher was great on Brown and he was fine on offense but not as good as we needed. 6. IO is an enigma. He made some very nice offensive moves and he is getting better all of the time on offense. However, he still turns the ball over and he is suspect on defense when faced with an athletic player who can drive to the hoop and his help defense is always late. He was the reason why we had so many baseline drives. At one point I thought that Sloan was going to burst when IO failed to help! 7. Varner gave us some very good minutes off the bench. This is the best role and time for Varner. 8.Ian was ok when against the 7 footer but he is too slow to cover a perimeter player. BOTTOM LINE----EVEN THOUGH WE PLAYED A VERY MEDIOCRE OFFENSIVE GAME AGAINST A GOOD TEAM ON THE ROAD -- WITH A TREMENDOUS FOUL SHOT DISPARITY--WE REALLY HAD A CHANCE TO WIN IF DREJAJ HAD NOT HAD THAT TERRIBLE TURNOVER. THAT TELLS ME WE ARE A GOOD TEAM THAT IS SOMEWHAT SNAKEBIT. WE NEED TO WIN ONE OF THESE GAMES TO GIVE THE TEAM THE CONFIDENCE THAT WILL BE NEEDED DOWN THE STRETCH. Billikenbooster Posted January 29, 2004 Share Posted January 29, 2004 Did you notice that CS had a brace, protective device on his right elbow early in the game, and shortly after the half got rid of it. Wonder if he wasn't dinged up a little bit. Those two drives Reggie had with finger rolls that just didn't fall hurt alot, as did that incredibly stupid no-look pass Drejaj made when we were down two and had the ball with about 1:45 left in the game. Boy that smarts! Better get our heads up, boys. We have another game to play soon, and it won't be easy. Play smarter, just as hard, and we can win. don't get your dobber down! slufanskip Posted January 29, 2004 Share Posted January 29, 2004 This game was officiated horribly ... but we still had too many blown chances and bad plays. We will not win on the road if we do not play smarter. We were so worried about denying their 3 pt shot that IMO we played a little to close allowing them much easier penetration. IO certainly can give his man a little space and still contest the 3. They had been averaging 22.5 3's a game while shooting 33%. We held them to 3-14. about 8.5 attempts and over 10% less than their normal percentage. I wish we would have let them have their attempts and stopped their penetration and their ability to get the ball inside ... they would not have shot 35 free throws and been able to penetrate so easily. Either way we had a game plan and it seemed we executed it defensively hindsight is 20-20. The reason for this loss was our second half turnovers many of them at very inoportune times. gister Posted January 29, 2004 Share Posted January 29, 2004 While Reggie scored a lot, he couldn't hit his 3's and missed a layup along with some close in shots by Frericks and others. Let's hope they got this kind of game out of their system and learned from it for UAB. Unfortunately, I think that will be a tougher game.
