-SIU had a kid signed from somewhere in ILL that played against ESL at Highland, one game viewing, he looked good that game, again one game viewing

That was Chris Payton and he sure did look good at Highland. But, something happened:

This is a pretty good read. If nothing else, scroll down to the part about the Greek league semi-final:

" The air inside the arena was thick with smoke from cigarettes and flares, and the stands were packed with frothing fans. Almost none of them were women. There were even fewer children. In the front row, one man wearing white-and-green face paint shook a giant inflatable penis at the Olympiacos bench. Not far from him, another man, also in face paint, was shirtless and played a bongo he’d somehow smuggled into the arena. Basket teams in Greece have firms, just like European soccer clubs. Each part of the main fan area was divided into subsections with signs for identification: Victoria, Skyros, the Hooligans, Gate 13, Kavala, and, the hardest to miss, West Block, which unfurled a giant banner from the upper deck with a menacing gas mask emblem."

  4. I loved watching John Redden come in off the bench. You could watch opposing guards start to fall apart at the halfcourt line. Found this regarding the Conference USA tournament run:

    https://unewsonline.com/2000/03/16/reddensintensityguidesbillikensintourney/

"Redden entered the contest against Southern Miss seven minutes into the game. He provided increased pressure and helped the Bills to a 29-28 lead at halftime.

When Redden entered the game in the second half, it was tied at 38. When he exited with six minutes left, the Bills held a four-point lead and were on their way to victory.

Redden continued his inspired play against Cincinnati. After Kenyon Martin’s injury, Romar anticipated a run from the Bearcats. Redden helped hold the Bearcats in check the rest of the game.

He pressured Cincinnati point guard Kenny Satterfield into six turnovers and held him to 16 points. Satterfield tried to make up for Martin’s lost points, but Redden shut him down.

Redden added seven points and four assists to the Billikens’ offensive attack. His slashes and drives through the lane helped soften the Bearcats’ post defense and freed up Justin Love for open jumpers on the perimeter.

Redden continued to increase his intensity and defensive pressure against Tulane. He helped shut down the Green Wave guards and created chaos in the backcourt. Redden spurred a Billikens’ defense that forced Tulane into 23 turnovers.

He hit key free throws at the end of the game that helped SLU maintain its lead. Redden finished the game with seven points, all from the free-throw line.

Redden saved his best effort for the championship game against DePaul. Redden smothered Blue Demon’s point guard Rashon Burno, holding him scoreless in 32 minutes. Redden’s effort frustrated Burno into fouling out.

“It felt good to stop him. We knew he contributed a lot to their team. He brings great momentum for them. I wanted to try to keep him scoreless and try to stop that momentum,” Redden stated.

Redden also had, according to coach Romar, the play of the game. DePaul had gained the momentum and was looking to cut SLU’s lead down even more. But Redden broke up an alley-oop pass by Burno, stole the ball and helped the Billikens regain control of the game."

" 9. Tramaine Isabell Jr., Saint Louis: Isabell was a star at Drexel last season, averaging 21 a game. He started his career at Missouri. So, he has had to come into multiple programs, make a solid impression and get off to a great start. The Billikens need a player like Isabell if they’re going to compete for the top of the A-10. "

" 11. Jarred Reuter, George Mason: The transfer forward from Virginia is expected to be a major player for the Patriots this season. Coach Dave Paulsen is counting on Reuter being a scorer and integral part of their offense. Reuter has played in a disciplined system and shouldn’t be someone who makes careless errors. The Patriots needed another offensive weapon to make a move up the A-10 standings. The hope is Reuter will deliver. "

"12. Dion Wiley, Saint Louis: Wiley had four seasons at Maryland and will end up shifting that experience to a Billikens team that should be on the verge of a breakthrough season. The exception is for him to become much more of a scoring threat. And there is a real chance that will occur. "

  6. Mitchell, Evans, Harris, Perry - Favorites

Remember Jeff's last game in the Conference USA tourney? -

" And when sturdy Saint Louis senior Jeff Harris fouled out with 15 points on an illegal pick midway through the second half - ending a superb four-year career on an entirely useless play - he was called to the Bearcats bench to be embraced by Huggins as the audience presented a standing ovation.
''It seems like we have to beat Saint Louis every year in the tournament to advance. The guy's a great coach,'' Huggins said of Spoonhour. ''Our kids have tremendous respect for Saint Louis, and certainly Jeff Harris. They do this to everyone.'' "

Shout out to Ian for getting me through some lean years and having the original 'Conklin Summer'. Also, much love to Mr. Love for 99/00 including the 4 game conference tournament wins to get us to the Dance.

  7. I guess I will be in the minority on this thread but I go to SLU games because I like the game of basketball. As long as there are kids playing on the court, I will go to the games. My hope, every year, is that we will be playing in the post season but it isn't my expectation. This 'situation' is just another bump in the long rough road of being a SLU fan. Go Bills!

" As smart as he was—skipping three grades, graduating from St. Louis University High School at 16, attending Saint Louis University, and enrolling in a master’s program in econometrics at the University of Wisconsin at age 20—he never celebrated the fact. He was quiet, sarcastic, funny, and, when asked by this editor to clarify an apparent miscue, Bonwich was usually right."

Very well done by George Mahe.

  11. https://www.stlmag.com/dining/hugo-s-pizzeria-from-baileys-restaurants-to-open-this-summer/

This the old The Good Pie location but larger:

"The space features exposed brick and concrete floors. It can seat 120 with an additional 60 out in the back garden. It'll also have a 12-seat red oak bar and an area for picking up to-go orders. The Good Pie formerly took up a single bay inside, but Baileys' Restaurants has purchased the entire building. Hugo's will use three of the bays and the group will announce a different concept for the fourth bay in the coming weeks."

The A10 seems to be heading into a complete turnaround next year. Teams like LaSalle, Davidson, Dayton, VCU, George Mason are on the path for a big upswing, biggest being LaSalle and Davidson. Dayton could have struck gold with Giannis Antenkumpo's brother Kostas

The Bonnies should tick up with Adams and Mobley as seniors and the number of freshman they have making the jump to sophomores. They will lose Gregg and what else?

    "On the cusp

    Hasahn French
    Commonwealth Academy (Massachusetts)
    Committed to Saint Louis

French is a throwback-style power forward: powerful, rugged inside and at his best offensively inside of 12 to 15 feet. In many ways his style would have been perhaps more valued a decade or two ago. Here's what is undeniable, though: French is a sheer winner, one of the best pound-for-pound rebounders in the country and an absolute steal in the Atlantic 10. He had plenty of high-major offers and undoubtedly could have made his presence felt there, but instead he'll get the chance to be part of the foundation of coach Travis Ford's rebuilding effort. He'll contend for a starting spot from Day 1 and will help to make the Billikens relevant again sooner rather than later."
