  1. Thank you kshoe and Pelican! I wrote a long post in response to the various people asking why we just didnt cancel this game or give the money back and not show up but I ended up just discarding it all because I thought, being new to this board, that there is no way they could be serious about that. Cancelling this game would have put SLU's program in much worse shape than it would be if Majerus left. This would have frayed the relationship with Duke (ok, most could live with this) but the biggest bridge burned would have been with CBS because of their, albeit small, regular season marketshare of College Basketball broadcasting presence. If we would have cancelled that game the program says good bye to $75,000, missed the opportunity for a high level of competition, SOS ratings, a national audience (and its recruiting exposure- yes, even a blow out like this can be helpful to the recruiting efforts) not mention that it would draw far more negative attention to the program. Cancelling this game is a much bigger admission to the floundering state of your program than just showing up, cashing a check and taking your lumps like a big boy program. Hundreds of other schools do this regularly with their full bench and some of you want to go and hide under the bleachers because we aren't at full power? Ridiculous.
  2. My thought... you cannot call that performance against a Duke a fiasco. They are the number one team in the country and you played them at home. SLU was NEVER expected to win the game, and with KM and WR out, they were not even expected to stay close- there was only upside to this game. This game was put on the schedule, well before the suspensions, as a game that was to, among other things, put SLU on national TV; provide them an A1 talent, on a hostile court, to play against; give Duke indoubtedly another notch on their non-conference home win-streak; and pad SLU's athletic departments coffers. Its a sad fact, but fact nonetheless... No one in the country, outside of some delusional SLU fans, thought SLU would contend. No one outside of the SLU community and maybe a couple of well knowledged fans and analysts were aware that SLU was missing two of their stars. I can garauntee you that no one upon hearing about KW and WR gave SLU much empathy. Unfortunately, SLU didnt do much to sway the nations opinions. It is unfortunate that SLU couldn't have had its full team to field a different result, but the fact of the matter is that the outlook for the rest of year is not changed based off of Saturdays loss. I know that your question was purely hypothetical, but this game was not the career barometer for Majerus. In a game where SLU had nowhere to go but up, the mercury never rose.
  3. Agreed. Also, this Duke team is DEEP. Their bench could finish top in the ACC. They will not be complacent. Impossible for a Duke team to be complacent at Cameron Indoor.
  4. Looks like Kyrie Irving will be sitting indefinitely. http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=205044326&DB_OEM_ID=4200 "Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Wednesday that freshman Kyrie Irving is out indefinitely after suffering a toe injury on his right foot in last Saturday’s win over Butler. No timetable has been set for his return as Irving will undergo rest and rehabilitation while recovering from the injury."

  6. Glad to see something posted about Hank Raymonds. Sorry for my delay in getting something up on the board. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/goldeneagles.html http://www.jsonline.com/sports/goldeneagles/111378344.html great picture of Al McGuire, Hank and Rick Majerus from 77. Majerus is the "only coach int he history of the game to start two Academic All Americans in the final four and graduate every player from a final four team more than half with honors." Which he attributes to Hank.
  7. here is what i found on ESPN. Just a portion of the article... My link In comparison to its competitors, the U.S. presentation, touching on the usual inane fare about being multicultural and professing how much the country loves the game, looked timid and was marred by gaffes. Morgan Freeman accidentally skipped a page of his speech and interrupted himself to correct it; several people misspoke and all speeches but Freeman's were flat and uninspired -- most notably former President Bill Clinton's meandering talk about many things other than the World Cup, including his foundation's work. Then there was the ill-advised spell when the slouching Gulati nixed the dais embraced by everybody else and paced around, giving his speech through a hand-held microphone. But regardless of its flaws, the presentation, as indeed did the entire bid campaign, focused on the U.S. as a practical, flexible (18 World Cup-ready cities to choose from!) and profitable choice. It was eminently clear that the U.S. had chosen to appeal to the bean counters, rather than those voting from the heart. Many of the talking points revolved around the record number of tickets sold when the U.S. held the '94 World Cup -- while steering clear of having hosted so recently, the second-biggest strike against the 2022 bid. Then the U.S. tried to induce salivation by hyping the potential riches flowing forth from sponsorship and broadcast rights, while pointing out that the necessary stadiums, airports, train links and hotels exist and are operational. Ultimately, Qatar, which had been in a dead heat with the U.S. according to insiders and bookmakers, ran a stirring campaign, offering FIFA what it so craves: a new market. The tiny oil-fueled state's beautiful proposition was reflected in a presentation that blew the U.S.'s out of the water aesthetically and emotionally. "When?" one of the stunning videos asked. When would the Arabs finally get the tournament of tournaments?
  8. After seeing Duke, especially Kyrie Irving, play last night... SLU will have trouble keeping it close, hanging around, competing, etc. Kyrie Irving is a special player. Battle for best guard in the country is between Irving and Kemba Walker (UConn).
  9. didn't realize that it was going to be on CBS. Hopefully it will be Gus Johnson. Gus Johnson Soundboard
  10. I grew up in STL and had season tickets to the Billikens. I came up to Milwaukee for school and now live up here. I am a season ticket holder to Marquette basketball games. We just played Duke and one of our message boards (muscoop.com) has a thread going on about Dike "Dookie" V and his 'preparation' for games. Here is what some have said: - I remember a conversation with someone who used to work for ESPN. Vitale showed up on the set of SportsCenter and knew nothing about the team he was supposed to discuss. Not sure which team it was, but he asked the guy "what can you tell me about X?" The guy did some quick research, got their leading scorer, and fed some info to Vitale. Moments later, Vitale goes on air screaming "Oh baby, look out for the X's, and this kid (blank), leading them in scoring, is phenomenal, I love him, baby!" As Benny said, Dickie V has a talent for turning a minute amount of information into the appearance of expertise. But he's only as encyclopedic as the producers that are feeding him the fuel for his schtick. - Saw Dickie V 3 or 4 times at our hotel--breakfast and in lobby. The guy with him all the time was Schwab (Sp?). I am told he is ESPN's stat guru. Guess Dickie goes nowhere without him. From what some have said, Dick Vitale doesnt know half as much about things as he portrays. If the SLU/Duke game is announced by Dickie V... mute it. Watching the Marquette/Duke game Monday was brutal. Dickie V has no shame in his love for all things Duke or Coach K... and it will likely be worse now since K got his 800th.
