Medley must be our best ever recruit!  Because Russell averaged 18p 5a for an NCAA Tournament team.

I watched Russell quite , not sure he is pg or an 18ppg in the a-10. We are going to like medley

There are also non-P6 schools that are at-large quality but happened to win their conference tourney. FAU, San Diego State, Memphis, and Gonzaga all would’ve been at-larges based on their seeding. Obviously not an exact science but theoretically, if there were bid-stealers in all of their conferences, they would all still make the tourney (FAU being the worst seed, 9)

Nevertheless, if it’s so hard for a mid-major to make the tourney, how has VCU made it to 9 out of the last 11 tourneys in the same conference as us with similar facilities and funding?

it is hard for vcu also, they have a good team, facts are it is hard for non power five accept that of not, if that is your only goal, be in for a disappointment. the odds are long even if you throw in those teams you mentioned. will all of the naysayers have the stamina to non stop complain for next eight months? will the tragedy of have ford as coach leave them broken and sad? time will tell

This is a skewed view of the NCAA Tournament bids.  Let's examine it another way. There are 68 bids, 32 are automatic bids. In basketball there's the Power 5 (ACC, B10, B12, SEC, P12) plus Big East that's 6 bids to the perceived powers.  32 - 6 = 26 bids to non power conference schools plus the 3 at large you mention so that is 29 bids to non power conference schools.  That number varies year to year.

How many of those vying for those bids have the resources that SLU enjoy?  Not many.   How many are geographically situated in areas with ample talent? Not many.

even using your numbers the slots available are scarce. daunting task for non power, essentially they must win tournaments or 270 or so teams vie for three slots. so however you want to paint it it is tough, margin so thin vcu was going home without the conference tournament win

Fred wasn't injured until 2nd half of the year when we already shot our at large chance. I don't recall Perkins being injured(other than when he fell funny and I think that lasted a game or so).  He never got back to his older self but that's a different story. I also don't recall Pickett dealing with anything the first half of the year.  And before we continue, Ford BFF, we were ranked around #102 going into conf play so at large was dead with a healthy team minus an up to speed Perkins.  For the second half of the year, Parker really improved, it was going to take some time due to JUCO switch, we all knew that.  Parkers -points over replacement numbers- the 2nd half of the season were greater(if not the same) than Freds first half were.

Back to our guy Perkins.  His conf % were better this year than 2 years ago. His defense was worse, but offense was better.

perkins had a high ankle sprain pre season that greatly hindered his mobility, never really recovered, i believe fred very well could have been the difference in a couple of games down the stretch, pickett also dealt with the high ankle sprain, which are generallyvery slow to heal, lost a great deal of his explosiveness

I get why people don’t like it but WVU did have a top ten SOS, won twelve Q1 and Q2 games, and had no bad losses (7-0 in Q3 and Q4). They had more Q1 and Q2 wins than over 43% of teams in the top 40 NET.

Fordham, who finished with a NET in the 130s, had zero Q1 wins and 70% of their wins came against Q4 teams.  I do agree it would’ve been cool to see them in the NIT.

Staying on topic, I hope no one transfers out of Fordham. Would love for them to build on this season’s success.

my point was that the deck is so stacked it is nearly impossible to get ahead, with the big boys in conference wins are counted as good and losses are not as bad, fordham in conference losses are nearly always looked at as bad, i say again if the tournament is the only goal it is very difficult to get there if you are not a big boy

21* wins and nothing to show for it. Cannot consistently beat the top teams in a weak conference. Congrats!

If you’re looking to transfer to a mid-major school and want to win 20 games a year AND be done before spring break then look no further, SLU and TFord are here for you!

help me out, what percentage of mid-major schools are still playing?

Jimmy Bell and WVU are going to beat Bama FWIW

score is 0-0 today, my point is there are very few at large bids for anyone except the big boys, so  if it is deemed a failure not making the tourney, get used to failure or find a big boy to root for, imho a 7-11 record in conference should not equate to a bid

and when they have injuries and problems they struggle....ask Dayton...again, that's why it's so hard to get in as a mid major they don't have the luxury of going 8-10 in conference play and getting a bid....they have to be almost perfect...

west virginia 7-11 in conference play, goes to ncaa tournament, fordham 12-6 in conference play with 25 wins doesnt sniff the nit.

his coaching ability evaluation shouldnt be black or white.   however there also shouldnt be a discussion if the question is underachieving or not.   well unless the powers to be lied to us last fall.  based on the now revealed lies and excuses for the results, imo this team far far underachieved.   somebody should be held accountable.   but apparently we are expected to accept the status quo if they are convinced it isnt the coach or athletic departments fault, that's fine as long as steps are being taken and shown to the fandom of the action to correct the fail.    if saint louis university wants our continued support, then show us the changes that will fix the fail.

i obviously didnt make my point

Dennis i understand you want to paint a literal picture of success.  21 win seasons are normally considered a success.   but unfortunately the expectations of the fan base was for a lot more wins than that and to still be playing rather than the season being over.   expectations endorsed and fed by the powers to be at Saint Louis University fired up the fan base to a level not seen before for the Billikens.  and now the defenders of the powers to be want to tell us, "pay no attention to what we told the world last fall, that obviously wasnt the case and we really meant a successful season was 20 wins.   since the Billikens actually exceeded that with 21 wins it was very successful."

well i personally dont like being patronized and gaslighted as such.  i would think you as one of us members of the Billikens Fandom would also be at minimum wanting some serious answers and action.   Notice i am not advocating in writing here fire the coach and/or athletic director, but just wanting some answers and a plan going forward.   just hoping and praying it will get better shouldnt fly.   we have been letting the powers to be get by with that for decades.   maybe it is time to be honest and even more so time to take some real action.

It isnt our place to tell the powers to be what that action or even that honesty would consist of.   These people get a lot of money to run this program and we only supply a lot of the enthusiasm, passion and funds to make it work.  but i sure would appreciate the powers to be telling us why we should continue to be a part of the this what now seems to be more than ever an "Effort in Futility".

my point roy was in response that players will only come to slu if they have no other choice and ford cant coach, if you want to say 21 wins is not enough so be it. but to say ford cant coach and the players dont want to play for him and you still win 21 doesnt make sense. either ford coached up the players that didnt want to play or the players  played above the level of coaching, how can you have it both ways, bad coaching and disgruntled players dont add up to top tier of the conference. pick one. i would have liked more wins, but lets be honest in our criticisms i dont think both positions  can be true

Winning 21 games with a NAIA and the worst a10 ever is not a positive. That’s equivalent to like 18 wins in a normal a10.

but apparently they win with a terrible coach with players that dont want to play for him, that is the narrative,  interesting line of thought

Who would want to play for Travis Ford if they had any choice at all? The perennial average coach in an average league

How amazing a guy who is such a bad coach that no one wants to play for can win 21 games, did he coach up lousy players or did the players win without any good coaching? how can it be both?

Interesting.......I wonder if it's by choice......

most of the time it is mutual, they know they are likely not to get playing time and want to move on, could be many factors, should we queue up the thread where the players hate ford? maybe nick has personal reasons for wanting to go somewhere, players will come in and they will have multiple reasons for wanting to be at slu. i thought he showed promise , wish him the best

  14. Steve would it be possible to put the fire travis threads in one place, so it would be easier to ignore? apparently they are not going to stop or even slow down. leaves little content left. i wont be missed if i never post again, but i see fewer and fewer of the long time posters, worst i have seen in the years i have been a member. i will not participate but rarely going forward.

Shouldn't Ford legacy assistant have landed a player at any point in the past if Ford is going to keep having one on the staff?

Stuen seemed liked a great guy and so does Forte, but where are the results from them on the recruiting front?

Who recruited the players on the roster now?
