Besides DM and LS, who have we offered?
GOSLU68 replied to VTIME's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
Tulsa' Lowrey after this one, too; 230 lbs and a high school career in Minneapolis, if we get him from the Council Bluffs, Iowa Juco lets hope he is better than Darren Clarke and not just another disconnected soul at 6' 8". Anyone no if he is a banger who can rebound? -
doesn't have a D 1 body; I would have liked him to come to SLU why couldn't he get an academic scholarship to SLU. Dayton's standards must be comparable. Unless he has grown I'd say he would be taller than Polk and a lot thinner than Liddell. Vtime you remember what his high school ppg and rpg numbers were- I was disappointed his dad was a great freshman college player with what looked like a 4 foot vertical leap on a jumper with a classic shake and bake move

he is straight forward and honest; he learns and admits his teams problems; right now we have the trhee best players we have had in quite some time; we may need an enforcer if we are going to have everyone emulate St. Joe's pulling jerseys and guys tangling Ian from front and back; we can not play finesse ball against these teams. We had better recruit Anthony Bonner Jeff Harris Carlos Skinner types to go with the shooters; I remember when we played Illinois and their guard would run his chest into our guards who were dribbling after a few times they would escape him and were no longer intimidating; This league does not play by MVC or MCC rules; it is going to be a like 5 or 6 Cincinnatis and guess what Xavier beat Cincy more often than not. Yes there are some weak sisters in the league and they need to get their acts together; I am happy we did not finish 13 th our first year; remember when we started in Conference USA people were saying we could not be competitive. I said the only chance we had against Kenyon Martins' team was if they all got knocked out at the jump ball- and that is what almost happen except we ran the table and won the tournament. Okay this year our luck ran out. We peaked and we crashed; but we are the only team in the league with 2 rookie of the year and one first teamer coming back; check street and smith in fall; we will be picked 4 th or higher and next's seniors will be saying I want to play in New York and Philly not road trips to Omaha and someplace in Northern Iowa. Even better if we get a win in the NIT

don't take this personally, I was only interested in finding out if SLU was disadvantaged in basketball recruiting because some high school basketball players regard college as a nuisance until they get to the NBA and may not want to attend classes as the Post would you have believe about Ricky Clemons and to be fair Romar's Randy Pulley; I recall my classmate Rich Nieman, a 7 footer working very hard in school to get B's in classes we shared; I'm sure he was a wiz in Physics. After 8 years in the NBA he has been teaching high school science, physics, etc from what I understand.

I went to both Illinois and SLU and the textbooks and curricula were on par; SLU forced all of the undergrads to take 4 courses of philosophy and 3 courses of theology which could be marriage, old testament taught by a protestant and comparatve religions taught by a Jesuit who led us to believe there were more similarities in Christian religions than reasons to fight about. I don't know if they still do that; but by the time you did those courses you felt you had a step up in brain power if not some moral tradition, The professors at SLU were verty dedicated even if teaching undergrad. At Illinois you had many more problems with professors so important they were tv classes to 400 in an auditorium or phd's with English as a second language and no teaching skills. To me the real differences were competiveness of the students; SLU makes a real deal out of how the average ACT score has gone up in candidates and those accepted
-
any idea what we expect of MBB recruits versus same question at Mizzou; I feel this would be a moot point at Illinois since they rank higher than us in most polls although they do offer bachelor's degrees in fine arts and physical education; but what about Missouri in particular and other state schools in the B12
-
still take any Missour high school graduate with a diploma despite or do they now require decent ACT or Sat scores as proof the kid has a chance if wants to attend classes?

I would like to see screens set; but I would also like shooters who could run non stop on the motion offense and recognize a screen and shoot the three. Drejaj and VN were out of shape and slow most of their careers and Drejaj was 0 for 6 on the the last game and if Lisch had not made a desparation 3 at the end of the game we would have gone 0 for the entire game; we have all seen the Adam Morrisons and the coach's son from Valparaiso a few years ago that could pop out at a predictable spot and his teamate find him for the assist pass and guess what they made the shots 55 percent of the time; we need shooters; nothing blows the oppositons defence like made shots and we had a small run this year and next year it could get better
-
last year he had a problem with technicals and the refs; this year he was quiet; last year he was physically ill over the team? Last year we had trouble getting the ball across the halfcourt timeline; this year Liddell and Lisch tookover as starters from Polk and Drejag adding speed and better attacking skills. Do they have upside? I'll bet they do. Will Ian improve again. I say yes. Will Dustin Maquire add Novack type shooting? Maybe. He could certainly make Luke Meyer look more like Romar's Ross Varner recruit. Will we get another big? Brad says that is his recruiters priorities. The real question might be if Monroe Douglas Jr could get an academic scholarship to Dayton why didn't SLU offer considering what his dad gave us. he is smaller than his dad; but if he wants to play could he still walk on for us? I understand he did not practice for Dayton yet I believe he sat on the bench at our games. What 's up with that? There are lots of questions for next year; I think it is going to be better and Brad has more credibility than Romar, Grawer and works harder than Spoon...Let's see what happens with recurits, Jucos and and transfers, The Post says there may be as many as eight from Missouri, alone
-
we played like the nice guys you'd like to have your sister date; Drejag did almost swing back once late in the game; without strength training and some commando tactics teams in this league have gotten used to hacking, grabbing, and mauling us an we run back to take up our positions. Blake Ahearne would have helped we need a driving shooter with no conscience. I have liked what I have seen a few times in JJ but today he floated and played like he was afraid to take a shot or break to the basket and he looked slow going after loose balls; not the coach when everyone misses and hurries their shots. I figured they'd win 15 games at most this season and all my friends said, no way. The last two games we did not look good and certainly couldn't catch a break, Even Duke and the fighting Illini lost by quite a bit in certain games. Next year with some improved shooting and rebounding I'd say 18-20 wins is a real goal

Has SLU ever had 2 NBA players at the same time?
GOSLU68 replied to kevinfootes's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
and Sodaberg is though he will play 4 guards if he has to in order to put the 5 most worthy players on the floor he would never waste the talent of Robibson or Clagget because he couldn't see beyond his and Winfield's chances to showcase their sons; what coach has done with IV is remarkable -
after Brad's show at Baccardi's my wife and I walked to the free parking in the rear of the building with the coach. I have not been a fan of VN but considering he was three of 5 and JJ was 1 for 1 I remarked that both contributed and VN finally looked like he had gotten in shape. Coach remarked VN came in heavy and was moving better now. JJ has shown up big in some of our toughest games, let's hope the two of them repeat their last game and some of the rest do what we have come to expect of them to wreak havoc on St.Joes. If AD or Luke or Polk hits a couple early I could envision a game where our starters are rested and all five plus AD score in double figures; we just need to keep those feet moving...something for SJU to think about

one year but was a year or two behind Nieman and Moore in School; it always surprised me Joe Wiley did not make it : I wonder if Vietnam had something to do with that; anyone remember? -

I grew up in E. St. Louis and went to SLU; St. Louis is the big time and for too long Belleville, Collinsvile, ESide, and Lincoln players had to feel they had to go away when it is a heck of a lot better to be a home town hero if you stay home to enjoy it with your family; nice for the Liddell and Lisch families to get a chance to enjoy that without driving a 150 miles one way to go to a game. If the local coaches support these kind of choices we can have what Memphis has the pick of our local players. Our coach grew a lot this year. He is young but determined and committed to living up to his word to his players and their parents and he'll get them to graduate with a Saint Louis University degree. Saint Louis loves St. Louis and the East Side has always been part of St. Louis Special congratulations to a happy Billiken-Tommie Liddell

VN had his best game; he and JJ combined 4 for 6 on field goals Ian was 5 of 11 which not quite his usual percentage; his only softness was out of position for rebounds and not as good at the line so they kept shoving him out. How many layups we missed and a few more free throws could have put us closer. Either you did not see the game or you are frustrated as to Sodabergs lack of recognition that they had a lid on Lisch and none of the other shooters got free for shots; thus the percentages elsewhere were like last years. The twin towers of the week before had already used up its surprise tactics but It could have freed up Ian. Lasalle played good D

Troopsports.com (Floyd Irons on Leon Powell's recruitme
GOSLU68 replied to VTIME's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
like everyone else he has not gotten along with every coaching staff at SLU or Missouri; some rea;ly old rumors had him pining for the college level as coaches came and went and he certainly had the win loss records to be shown some consideration; he has the opportunity to steer kids and we wasted some like Grawer's inability to build a team around Mel Robinson when it seemed he preferred his big men to rebound and kick it out to the guards or not play-that's all- we should hope he gets along with SLU -
match up to the opposition-we need at least 8 plyers the quality of the top three to play motion offense and man defence-providing no ankle sprains, etc.

Troopsports.com (Floyd Irons on Leon Powell's recruitme
GOSLU68 replied to VTIME's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
Floyd Irons has certainly been a great high school coach and sometimes a friend of SLU; lets hope he does not pressure his kids to leave town -
This young man has played hurt and unselfishly for SLU; when Lisch is hitting he gives the ball up to him and they make a good combo guard unit; at the beginning of the season I did not think they would be this good. Lisch may be a little better on defense and Liddell is certainly picking up the slack on rebounds because we don't have forwards. Liddell is stronger than Larry Hughes and less injury prone; I know Hughes was hurt this year but I was surprised he did not get beat up his first year in the NBA. Local players like Lisch and Liddell get 100% payback from the community and press but SLU and Soderberg have certainly given every recruit the chance to play and the chance to be local stars and the chance to get a degree they can be proud of.

I went to Illinois for three semesters and evevtually came home to go to SLU and get a bachelors' and masters' degreel at SLU The SLU faculty is on par with many state schools in many subject areas. You never here people choose Missouri, SIU, or Missouri State over SLU for academics. Illinois was as good a Universtiy as you could find in many areas of study- some that you can not find at SLU and had many PHD level people in prorams such as P.E. Kinesiology ,and physical therapy that a school with nursing and a med school like SLU could emulate and the athletes would benefit from them. However the experience of a Big Ten campus with 40-50,000 students is not pleasant for everyone. St. Louis itself is culturally and sports wise no small draw when you throw in the Rams and Cardinals even the Blues for kids that want it all; we have a great city and plenty to attract people to golf at Forest Park, the zoo, the art museum, symphony; we did some of all of those as 18-22 year olds. Sr. Louis is certainly as good in theatre and the symphony experiences ias the cornfields of Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame-you name it. If we have recruiters who can't sell this city or this school which has grown and is much better with Biondi building a campus better than Wash U something is not being said to the assistants that needs to be said.

What does Chris Sloan do and could his salary go toward
GOSLU68 replied to billikenmetz's topic in Billikens.com Main Board
after the disaster of Romar and Spoonhauer not working or knowing the midwest I figured Brad was hired to fill the void. We know Beanes success with barely division one Semo; who is our stud recruiter? Grawer had Winfield with is NBA background. If Beane leaves what are the other's credentials? Spoon seem to have "friends" at different Jucos; although I would agree Brad is less stuck on recruiting all pitbull guard defenders and shooting guards so I think there is hoope for a normal team of guards, forwards and centers in our future. I wish we could afford a better recruting assistant with SLU connecions-SLoan seems like he is beibg groomed for an AD position down the roadl he seems like a quality young man but mt opinion of great basketball pkayer at the college level is at a standard we did not get with good players like Justin Love or Reggie Bryant-I'd like to see a future NBA player recruited each year; When I was at SLU we had Eugene Moore, Rich Nieman graduating together as a 4 and 5 and Harry Rogers went to the NBA the next year: Joe Wiley was a fun player to watch like Clagget but the guys we have now maybe Ian has a chance; Liddel needs a jump shot. -
schedule and would fit well in our league although DePaul will be looking for a new coach if they have another year like this one Travel would be better for them to come to St. Louis . Was that the Diener girl helping the team last night or did she just have the same look? Unfortunately I lost my behind the SLU bench seats when Debbie Yow took over and some us were not invited to tag day; let's hope the new AD is kinder to those of us who give to the Billiken club It would be good to keep some of the Marquette type rivalries with decent RPI
