  1. For those of us out of town and not as lucky as the rest of you who will be in on the good times in person, I want to say that this sounds like something huge for St. Louis. Here in the San Francisco bay area there are 6 D1 teams to root for, so the excitement of a Stanford as #1 is shared by a lot of other allegiances even in the south bay where the Santa Clara and San Jose State fans follow their teams. But St. Louis only has our Billikens to support. You better get your season tickets early when the new arena is open because it sounds like the new AD will get everyone to take note of what Brad and company have put together for you fans. Have a happy and safe Independence weekend everyone. The 4th is also my birthday, so I always celebrate!
  2. PGA and LPGA is fun to watch in person, except the spectators sweat more than the golfers and use more calories keeping up with a player as they go around. I prefer playing also since my caddying days at Algonquin in Webster Groves. I enjoyed following and talking to Yogi Berra at the Bob Hope tournament in Palm Springs a few years ago, and watching Arnold Palmer in person. We duffers don't have a clue what the pros know about the game. But that's what makes it a challenge and fun??!!
  3. Being carried 34 miles from the Arch to Forest Park. I wish I could be there to see this historic event. I was in Greece last year on vacation and am really looking forward to seeing the Olympic Games on TV in August. We sometimes forget how much the Greeks gave western civilization that is still visible there thousands of years old now. I hope and pray that in this dangerous time we live in the spirit of peace and friendly competition has a glorious stage to show the world and is not made a terrorist target. The people of Greece do not deserve to see any harm done to them. They are magnificent hosts to visitors who show an interest in them and their history.
  4. Congradulations on your crystal trophy. It sounds like the natural hazards you faced did not harm your group too much. I sat next to John Cook in our Accounting class at C&F as we called it then in the early 60's. He did rather well for himself and gave back to the school admirably since our graduation. I should have paid more attention to the new invention we were just hearing about called computers back then. He was wise to do so.
  5. when it comes through St. Louis next week. It is a neat experience because there is a lot of stuff going on along with it. I was lucky enough to hold a spare one when it came through San Francisco on it's way to LA 20 years ago. I just asked the guy with it if I could see it and he handed it to me. You are lucky to be on the route because you had the games there 100 years ago.
  6. She wasn't hooping like the Bills, nor hula hooping. She was doing the famous native dance of Hawaii. Anyone who hasn't seen it performed properly is welcome to come to the Aloha Festival in the Presidio in San Francisco August 7 & 8 and save a trip to the islands. She also sang like an angel. By the way I saw the Will Smith depiction of Ali last weekend on TV. Will did a good job and is a good looking guy, but Ali was prettier as he often boasted, IMO.
  7. I returned to Borders to look at the rest of the book and found that the demo copy ends at page 420, the rest were blank. It gave me more time to go back at look more closely at some of the amazing photos and text. My favorite photo is on p. 84 showing Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Louis taken by Howard Bingham in LA in 1962. The web site has film and a small preview of this massive work. I was lucky to arrive just as the Makaha Sons and a local Hawaiian group were singing a few songs to promote their new CD's in the cafe. A quite attractive lady was doing a hula and singing along. It was later mentioned she was a former Miss World! I was very impressed.
  8. You will have to cough up $80 for those courtside seats. Man as bad as the PLAYOFFS have been so far, let alone the regular season ( just plain boring ) Savis should pay people to see NBA exhibition games.
  9. you won't be finding this book in your library any time soon. While brousing at Border's over the weekend I came across their demo copy of " A Tribute to Muhammed Ali - Greatest Of All Time" I could not belive this book!! I got about halfway through the 800 pages and it wore me out. It weighs 75 lbs, measures 20 x 20 x 6" thick. Check out the web page at www.taschen-goat.com if you can't find the real thing at your neighborhood bookstore. Get your order in fast, only 9,000 will be sold for $3,000 each; and if you really want to impress your friends 1,000 of the Champs edition cost $7,500 and they throw in some modern art. I loved the photos and plan to go back soon to finish the rest of the book when I have a few more hours to spare.
  10. I never heard of it until last December when they were here to broadcast the 2 games at the Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland. I spoke to Matt Doherty who was doing the color commentary, but told me he would rather be coaching at St. Johns. He grew up on Long Island and his sister was an alumnus. They got two great games that day 12/20/03: Stanford beat Gonzaga and St. Joseph's barely beat the California Bears! This was the 7th annual and I hope it continues even after legend Pete Newell is no longer here. I would not pay extra for CSTV now but I expect changes in how we choose what we want to watch and pay for someday from a menu.
  11. Just east at the Cape. Its real, not make believe. You should have passed through O to Cocoa Beach.
  12. Has anyone been to any Skyhawk games? I see where JL went for 37 on 5/18 against Oklahoma and is averaging 26 ppg and 3.1 steals! I just hope he comes "home" to play in the SF pro-am league that starts here in a few weeks. He has lots of fans here.
  13. What happened to the SL team in the USBL? I logged in to check on my guy Justin Love and could not find them in the standings?
  14. if you ever find yourself in Newport Beach, CA. while the wife is shopping at Newport Center look west across the street to John Hamilton's amazing collection at www.newportsportsmuseum.com. It is the largest privately owned and open to the public free with a nice web site place I've ever seen. Go downstairs and sit in one of the old seats from Sportsmans Park!
  15. is how Grant Wahl describes Quin in this week's SI. He mentions some interesting info on his kindness to Jay Cyriac. So Q's not such a bad guy after all.
  16. Montgomery is 57 and the Warriors are offering $10,000,000 for the next 4 years. He lives in one of the most expensive cost of living towns in the USA, and he does not have to move! I'd say it is a good financial decision, wouldn't you? Names in today's SF Chronicle speculated to take over the Cardinal are Mark Few of Gonzaga, and former Montgomery assistants Nevada's Trent Johnson and Oregon's Ernie Kent.
  17. Since I left SL after graduating 40 years ago, which games would everyopne like to have in their DVD collection if we could get them? I'm sure there have been some barn burners like last night's Laker win.
  18. Majority, it sounds like you are the only one so far who has been to a game. Tell Justin his fans and teammates at SF City want to see him playing at Kezar this summer. He was most inspirational player last yeat and led them to a 9-0 championship season. If he gets out here after the last game 6/20 in Brooklyn he should only miss one game. Check out the games if you are out this way this summer, see www.sfprocity.com
  19. Has anyone seen the Skyhawks yet? I see they are 0-8 so far, but my main man Justin is averaging 24.5 and was named USBL PoW. Ask him if he will be home this summer to play in the San Francisco pro-am games.
  20. Good for Myles. I just spoke to my cousin in PA. who is a HOF retired coach in the Ivy League which does not give out athletic schollies. But she tells me Princton forgets the loans to atheletes after they graduate ( I know just an unsubstantiated rumor ) Penn would gives loans to athletes, but they want them repaid like everywhere else. What do you think about that?
  21. Cal rugby coach Jack Clark won his 20th national title since 1980. The Penn State ladies beat Princton and next door to the rugby field at Stanford at the swim complex in a less macho sport the Santa Clara Aquamaids won their 13th consecutive overall U. S. National Synchronized Swimming Championship. A great day for the locals down on the farm.
  22. in a sport less popular than socccer in the USA, but very big in other parts of the world ( mainly British Empire )...Rugby! The California Golden Bears try for their 13th in the past 14 years take on Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo at 4 PM on Stanford's Campus. Princton and Penn State play the ladies final at noon. Stay tuned Rugger Fans...
  23. The term "Prep School" has a much nicer ring to it than JC or JUCO I must say. Kind of like in England, Eton, Cambridge, etc., are called public schools.
  24. what I saw on the Travel Channel last night? Cedric the Entertainer(??) hosted a St. Louis travel show (arch, brewery, ballpark, delmar comedy club where he started). His ego topped The Donald in New York City that preceded it. It was not a fair comparison of my old hometown.
