courtside
"In 1966 I was a Senior at Marquette High. It was open gym night(Rick still shows up at open gym nights btw) and somebody had the Final Four Championship game on a little black-and-white tv. ...I couldn't help but watch...I was spellbound by Texas Western's mastery over Kentucky. That team changed basketball for good, and it changed basketball for me too. It was the first NCAA Final Four game I ever watched, I remember thinking, I wish I could play in a game like that."......-Rick Majerus "I had two tvs on in the house. Rick's game was on the tv in the bedroom, and another show was on the tv in the living room. I kept pacing, pacing, pacing...from one room to the other. I wouldn't let anybody in the house. Absolutely not. They'd think I was crazy. ...When they won, I just can't tell you how wonderful I felt for him. His dad(Ray) would have been so thrilled. And this is a mother talking, but he looked so cute walking off the floor. He had that little crooked smile. That's when I wished I would have been there. ...When he called, he was just so thrilled. I said Rick, I knew you could do it. Now I'm coming to San Antonio. I'm coming to the Final Four.".....-Alyce Majerus, March 1998. "Did he tell you why he couldn't go? He canceled because Karl Malone needed help with his charity benefit....my brother Joe is the director of group sales and marketing for the Cardinals. They were going to have Rick throw out the first pitch. then have him do radio-tv with Mike Shannon. Tony LaRussa was going to give him a Cardinals Jersey with "Majerus" on the back. Even Mark McGwire was pumped. He told my brother he was looking forwward to meeting him....Maybe next year."......-Jeff Strohm April 1998 Good luck Rick.
