inthelou
I've noticed the last year or two he absolutely will not use either of those phrases. He always says "Saint Louis" as if he's talking to some kind of national audience. Anybody else notice this? Not flaming him, it's just a little weird. VTIME
You dont think a religious University with the word "saint" in it should emphasize the saint?
FromGreeceWithLove
I don't think that is what the poster is getting at. I think he is saying that Ramsey says St. Louis as if we represent the city of St. Louis as opposed to saying Saint Louis University or SLU which represents the jesuit institution. I have never realized Ramsey doing that, but I never really paid attention to it.
inthelou
That's exactly the point I was making. He absolutely NEVER describes the team as anything but "Saint Louis". He never identifies them with St. Louis University, either via that or "SLU" or "St. Louis U." I have just found it strange. He started that maybe 2 years ago? I guess I'm listening to the broadcasts more now that none of the games are on TV.
GOSLU68
it works for Cincinatti, Syracuse, Notre Dame: these guys get paid by the sound bite. Not quite "that's a winner" by Jack Buck but it is certainly something he must be working to develop. Can you imagine if you practised saying Southwest Missouri State instead of SMSU and someone passed a law so you only had to say Missouri State and people could still understand you. On the other hand how many alums live in the St. Louis metro area versus how many people live in the St. Louis area who could buy a ticket if they felt an association to the team. You wouldn't have to be Catholic or know what a Jesuit was or what a Billiken is to go to a game.
SLUMS81
Just like Memphis, Louisville, Miami, Houston, Charlotte, etc.
