He’s taking cues from Obama. Be the cool guy in charge and they won’t see that you’ve run the place into the ground and love you because you’re the cool dad they wish they had.
Dui Beto the billionaire convinced a large part of Texas to vote for him because he rode a skateboard and played guitar. That’s honestly how politics work and you’re wrong if thinking President of a university isn’t a political game
Good to see the U High's finest representing.

Serious question you have not commented In a while and you have a couple of snarky comments to Taj and Roy on this subject why can’t you respectfully comment why you think it okay what the Bagley family did is okay. Taj just wrote a thoughtful response to your snarky comment I am courious why you think this is okay.
Respectfully, I have no problems with a family taking money from a multi billion dollar corporation. Nobody was hurt.

Any time the Illini lose a recruiting target it is because someone is getting paid or because of grades. I know all fan bases have some fans that act like that, but it is how the vast majority of Illini fans act.
I love when Illinois acts like they're not just yet another state school with their "academic standards". Puh-leese.

since this thread appears to be drifting to recruiting b.s. of all programs not just billikens i assume you all saw this today about bagley from duke:
http://thespun.com/acc/duke/marvin-bagley-family-nike-payments
sickening if true. btw, since i dont know if the "the spun" is a good source or not, usa today is quoting most of this today as well.
Not sure how you get through the day if this qualifies as "sickening".

How dare that family utilize a generational talent to pull themselves out of poverty. Downright un-American!

Mark smith does not want to play at Slu at all. He has duke offers before choosing Illinois
He's not going to have a Duke transfer offer.

A Mark Smith Jordan Goodwin backcourt would be something.

Interesting that the staff didn't slowplay Pearson for two more weeks to wait for Rhoden to complete his visits. I guess that says something about their evaulation of Pearson's upside.

Not going to happen.

Every click the article gets is a good thing for Ortiz. I won't even give him the satisfaction of someone reading his garbage. The PD wants people to have been sexually assaulted so that they have a good story. If players are cleared and were competing for a conference championship, Ortiz will be nowhere to be found
This response to a very legitimate point tells you everything you need to know. He's a troll that only cares about clicks.

He's a clown and a troll. Posting pictures of concession stands and closed doors as if restricted media access to a basketball team is some type of egregious crime against humanity. Don't even get me started on the follow up tweet complaining about some song that the softball team was playing during warm ups.
The P-D went from having Miklasz, Strauss, and Burwell to Hochman and Ortiz. What a drop off in quality.
Edit: just saw his column today on it. Jesus Christ.

Well yea. Student apartments = gfo and yes basketball players
No other athletes live on campus? Where have you confirmed that it was basketball players?

Yeah there is no way now that there isn't an effect to the basketball team. These guys are so stupid. So ridiculously dumb. I can't even believe how dumb this is.
So you've confirmed that the student-athletes were basketball players/

Pretty interesting mix to have two P5 teams then slu and then penn and Santa Clara
Penn State not Penn. So 3 P5 teams.

@coreyevans10: 2018 wing Jared Rhoden is down to a final five: Wichita State, Penn State, Seton Hall, Santa Clara & St Louis

Melo didn't need to accept the trade. The fact that he did should indicate that he's willing to be a team player to try to win. Otherwise why move to Oklahoma?

Think it is interesting that he didn't mention MSU.
Aaron Henry took his spot. I don't think MSU are a destination for THT anymore.

Kale Catchings of CBC committed to Harvard.

In addition to good reasons posters have mentioned, here are a couple others... or ones I'd like to emphasize:
1) Spoon was a indeed a tremendous interview. He could sell. Majerus usually wasn't and didn't. (I did like his quotes on quality of SLU education)
2) SLU under Spoon was newsworthy. Getting them to the Big Dance was nearly unthinkable at the time, making it fun for fans to get on bandwagon. Today, a bit of been there, done that...
3) Keeping good coaches and recruiting new ones was much more difficult back in day. No building. Little money. Showing recruits West Pine Gym was like recruiting with arm tied behind back. I always wondered if Rich, Charlie, Lorenzo, Brad would have had more recruiting success/stayed longer if Biondi had built Chaifetz earlier..
4) Given 16,000+ average attendance under Spoon, still kills me they didn't build Chaifetz bigger. I understand original plan included second deck but had to be killed due to unbudgeted practice facility and concerns with ground underneath Chaifetz. Regardless, while they won't average that number moving forward, if program begins drawing well again, Scottrade and the dome just down the street for select dates.
Summarizing, it's a different and more sustainable environment today. Major financial commitment from University and key donors made it so. With fine coach who is outstanding recruiter and good media guy in place, and handful of top local recruits as cherry on top -- and wide open spot in top 20 market with no NBA team -- could be a lot of fun.
A-10 membership is still a limiting factor on the potential popularity of the program to non alumni. Dayton and VCU being the lone marquee matchups is not good enough.

I'm not privy to all of the rules, but if that design is from an official university source, I would think that's violation — or should be.
It's not a violation. Schools can make graphics for recruits. It's common. Schools can also now retweet commitments from players (that's a fairly recent rule change).

Josh Harrelson - signed with Western ILU and then wanted out. Same coach who signed him was still there and ultimately blocked the kid so he then had to go JUCCO.
Ok so 10 years ago in the Summit League. I still like our odds. Not much precedent.

Power 5 is a football distinction and needs to stop being used for basketball. The Big East is a better basketball conference than the SEC and regularly better than the Big 12 and Pac 12. The Big East is a major basketball conference. The WCC and A-10 are not.
