This is part of the triumvirate of strange distinctions held by SLU athletics.

    1. We were #1 in the first AP college basketball poll.  This happened in 1949.  It was the season after we won the NIT.  It is part of the argument for the idea that we won the national championship in 1948 by winning the NIT, as opposed to Kentucky winning the national championship by winning the NCAA tournament.

    2. We completed the first forward pass in college football.  My understanding is that when the rule changed to allow it, everyone was scheduled to play on Saturday.  SLU and the team they were playing, don't know who it was, saw that really bad weather was coming the following day, so they moved the game to Friday night.  I'm sure the two programs knew the ramifications of moving the game, and I'm sure other teams weren't happy when they found out.  Either way, we probably won the coin toss and then put ourselves in the history books.

    3. SLU won the one and only gold medal awarded at the Olympics for American Football.  American Football was an exhibition sport at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.  Since no other countries played American Football, club and college teams signed up and competed.  SLU won the competition and was awarded gold medals for their effort.

The forward pass game was against Carroll College (Waukesha, WI) - my parents both went there! Also, it recently changed names to Carroll University.

  2. We have two players that I assume will make every shot they take. A pretty fun change of pace from the Crews years.

Perkins and Jimerson can score on any given possession, while Goodwin and French turn broken plays and missed shots into high percentage chances. And it’s not like the other guys are scrubs, everyone else can get 10pts without it being surprising.

We have balanced, deep scoring for the first time since Cody and Kwamain graduated (and neither of them were paragons of efficiency).

It's not disingenuous. Your own account says encouraged in the Chamber, it clearly wasn't also required in the hallways. "Most members"?  It was required for everyone else. I wasn't debating whether she did more than Trump nor did I state she did or didn't. I clearly said I also thought Trump should have done more. Nancy Pelosi among many others from both parties is a huge part of what is wrong with our government.

You said, "Doesn't seem she or the other members of the House felt wearing a mask was important until just a couple of days ago."

She had clearly felt it was important enough to do so herself and also put some level of policy in place to get others to do the same, several months ago. For most, that was sufficient. Recently, she decided to up that to a full blown requirement due to the discourtesy (and also illness) of several members. She has taken it seriously for quite some time and then chose to take it even more seriously in response to recent events.

I just don't see how one can argue that Pelosi hasn't "set an example" in the positive as far as mask wearing is concerned.

Also, the DC order doesn't apply to Federal properties, so I'm not sure what the argument is there.

I see something generally off with this ----- not that it's good or bad --- just off.  Why is this chart acting like a heart monitor?  Up.  Down,  Up.  Down.  Up.  Down all with relative consistency?  I find that consistency odd.  Plus, I'd like to know how this plays into the national average ..... the context.  In 2017, something like 7,800 people died each day in the US.  Are the numbers above added to that or are they a part of that?  So was the total deaths on April 14 still close to 7,800 (with COVID deaths a part of it) or was it 10,178 that day (the usual daily average plussed up with COVID numbers)?

Not that I care to debate it, just trying to understand context.  I'd also like to know how many people were tested and ther number of positives found on say March 31, 2020, ads opposed to July 15, 2020 ----- because it would seem if you test 100 people on March 31 and find 5 positives, that's 5%.  If you test 100,000 on July 15 and get 5,000 positives, well, that's still 5%.  But the numbers go a lot higher a lot faster if you have increased testing that much or more each day.  The sheer starkness of numbers on the boob tube is sensational so it sells.  But what does it really mean?

    No debate, just questions.

I read a couple months back that many hospitals don’t report new info on Sundays (some don’t on Saturday either?), so when you look at daily graphs, you’ll get these weird up and down spikes. Smoothed graphs or ones that bin longer timeframes take care of this issue, but aren’t always ideal for other reasons.

I think you are right...I took that statement on the Rhesus monkey from Dr. Munster (interesting name)  of the US National Institute of Health ...the researcher who conducted the experiment at the Rocky Mountain Lab in Montana for Oxford U.

I looked it up....and we share 93% DNA with the Rhesus monkey....and 99% with the chimpanzee. So the Rhesus is close but not the closest ...but it is probably close enough to be a good test subject.

In any case , it is a significant breakthrough in that it paves the way for the 6000 person trial in the next 30 days.

It is often the closest relative that we test medicine on prior to human trials. They’re relatively easy to breed and keep in captivity, and are the lab rat of primate medical research/testing.

But yeah, the two species within the genus Pan (Chimpanzees and Bonobos) are our closest extant relatives.

Our 1st  sweet 16 entrant in the Corona bracket goes to Oxford University......who just completed a Rhesus Macaque monkey (our closest relative) study...all monkeys were disease free 28 days after being given the school's  new vaccine and then exposed to Coronavirus. ...this trial now leads to the 6000 person  study which starts immediately....and will be completed  by the end of May.    This gains them entry into my T3 bracket....Treatment Trial Tourney bracket.

A Final 4 possible by Sept (400,000  to be given the vaccine) ...with maybe a tourney winner ( Effective vaccine for the general public) before  the end of the year

Of course Oxford still has a number of games to play (always a chance for an upset)....

Bottom line...We only need 1 team to win.

Just a quick note, rhesus macaques are most definitely not our closest relative... this is still a decidedly positive development, however!

I would take that as bad news.  By this I mean that I would assume that Ford would clear a spot first.  I think he would ask Okoro to wait on making an announcement until he gets things in order here.

There's no rule against being oversubscribed, and I could imagine a player has told the staff they plan on leaving but hasn't made it official yet. Especially if the outgoing player is relying on the school for resources at this point... that said, this definitely doesn't feel like good news for us.

Love having three bigs who can score 1v1 in the post, teams won’t get a break with these three in the rotation.

As many know, Saint Louis University is temporarily suspending face-to-face classes next week.  The topic of the Corona virus has already been raised in different threads.  To keep these threads more focused -  I ask that discussion regarding the Corona Virus be contained to this thread.

Per usual, please refrain from political attacks and discussion.

So you’re quarantining the coronavirus (discussion)

  10. In the US, the high end of the range for annual flu deaths is 61,000. The low end for annual flu infections is 9,300,000. Therefore, the most lethal hypothetical flu would have a death rate of 0.6%. The death rate of Covid-19 is 2-4 times that. Plus the typical lethality of the flu is closer to 0.1% anyway. And Covid-19 has a longer incubation period, which is at least part of the reason it appears to be more contagious.

    It’s not just the flu.

Just as an aside to this topic because I don't think it warrants it's own thread, but I found the tweet from Miles Reynolds interesting. Something like, Coach Ford's done a great job with this year's Billikens. I wish he was coach when I was there. I haven't followed Miles career, but didn't he end up as starting PG at Oklahoma? Makes me wonder why he didn't stick it out here if he felt this way about Travis. I guess Crews just soured him so much on SLU that he felt it was best to start over someplace new. Also, didn't he at first transfer to Pacific, and then to Oklahoma? I always thought he was one of Crews better gets. He did have some nice games for us as I recall from those dark dark days of Crews and lose.

FWIW, Roby replied to his tweet with one of these: 🤔🤔🤔

  12. Pretty common for athletes to go with a boot just to speed up recovery. I remember seeing Willie outside the BSC with a boot on a game day. He played that night without any obvious limitations. Why not be cautious for a glorified exhibition game?

I'm not saying he shouldn't be playing, or he didn't have a good 1st half but he shouldn't be taking more shots per minute than anyone else on the team. He's shooting under 33% from the field and 20% from 3. 9 boards is a nice game and I'm not as down on his D as it seems some others have been

Agree 100%, I feel like the shooting/scoring will eventually come. I’m encouraged that the other parts of his game are reaching an acceptable level.

Yes sir, I am in full agreement with most of what you say. Some points I want to make:

    1. Yuri and Jimerson have been captured in tapes from prior games this season. They are not unknown to the opposition, as Hargrove remains, instead they  are known threats that need to be neutralized. Play will be harder for these two now that they are recognized as threats. I am confident they will learn a lot this year and continue improving.

    2. We are now at 5-1.

Agree that they will be facing defenses that know them better moving forward, but it’s nice that we now have four guys (Goodwin, French, Collins, Jimerson) for whom the scouting reports are all essentially “don’t let them get the ball with any space whatsoever.” That’s a nearly impossible task. And Jacobs is quietly having a very solid sophomore season, just needs to be more consistent. That’s our best five and leaves Goodwin as the de facto 4, but it’s what we’ve seen Ford roll with most this season, I’d suspect.

Just checked the stats for the game, the one that really got me was the rebounds. SLU  had 60 rebounds, Belmont 38. This was one critical area where we dominated over Belmont.

Goodwin and French combined for 37 boards... only one fewer than Belmont as a team!
