  1. Hargrove and Collins combined for 14 turnovers. That’s 3.2 more than we’d averaged as a team so far. Feel like a reminder to play within themselves is in need. Thank god Nesbitt stepped up to make big shots, and Jimerson to ice it. We just played about as poorly as we can and came away with a win against a decent team. Not pleased but I’ll take it. Let’s clean up our act and trounce SFA.

After tonight’s game we were in 1st place in Concacaf qualifying. Mexico 2nd. Canada 3rd. Panama is a distant 4th. But Mexico is playing in Canada tonight. Top 3 automatically qualify. 4th place has to play a play-in against a team from another continent

I would not call Panama a distant 4th, they were only 3pts (one win) back before tonight’s games.

That said they are down 1-0 early vs El Salvador

  3. So, I like the idea of Williams, he’s a player we haven’t had for a minute - high production, low efficiency. We desperately needed someone to put up shots with Goodwin and French leaving.

However, Williams has borderline terrible advanced stats (cbref link here). I’m hoping he can do more with less now that he’ll finally be on a decent team, but that feels very much TBD. He feels way more like a “let’s see what he can do for us off the bench” type than a sure fire starter.

Maybe his gunner attitude will rub off on Gibson?

So what do we think the starting lineup will look like next year? Yuri, Nesbitt, Thatch, Perkins, Okoro? Maybe swap out Thatch for Jimerson?

Thatch/Jimerson/Hargrove will all be competing hard for those minutes. Linssen and Bell will also want to show that they deserve more than mere backup minutes. Going to be a fun year again next season!

Does this mean that one member of GaTech won’t be able to participate, or the whole team?

Good question. I read it as they were withdrawing the team, but that seems not to be the case on reading further.

What a ridiculous standard the NCAA is setting on this. How is every member of the travel party not a “close contact”

I get where you’re coming from for sure. I watched a lot of Fletcher in high school and also most or all of his early season games at UK and definitely think he would get minutes for us right away. Keep in mind he even started for them at one point early in the season before that relationship with Coach Cal started fraying. He, Perkins, Hargrove and Strickland all can play and guard multiple positions. It would definitely be a bit of a logjam with those guys, but you have to roll the dice to make it work if you can.

And while we only have to replace two players, they were responsible for ~60 minutes per game. I highly doubt all those minutes go to two guys next year, much more likely to get distributed across the group.

I’d be surprised if he came here, He would get very little PT next year and I don’t think he’d  want to sit out another year

You really think he wouldn’t compete for PT? He was a top 60 player in high school and is an elite athlete. Perkins is the only 100% guaranteed starter next year (Yuri at like 99%), you have to think he’d be able to compete for minutes.

No surprise here. I would guess Coach Poach to be heavily involved. Although, I guess this is not a poaching situation. Any thoughts on how much we need him if he is at all interested?

He’d be a great complement to Perkins right away, they could be a dynamic duo at the 3/4. Fletcher’s biggest problem last year seemed to be defending without fouling (59 minute sample size, >6 fouls/40). He’d probably at least help soften the blow of losing Goodwin’s rebounding.

This is part of the triumvirate of strange distinctions held by SLU athletics.

    1. We were #1 in the first AP college basketball poll.  This happened in 1949.  It was the season after we won the NIT.  It is part of the argument for the idea that we won the national championship in 1948 by winning the NIT, as opposed to Kentucky winning the national championship by winning the NCAA tournament.

    2. We completed the first forward pass in college football.  My understanding is that when the rule changed to allow it, everyone was scheduled to play on Saturday.  SLU and the team they were playing, don't know who it was, saw that really bad weather was coming the following day, so they moved the game to Friday night.  I'm sure the two programs knew the ramifications of moving the game, and I'm sure other teams weren't happy when they found out.  Either way, we probably won the coin toss and then put ourselves in the history books.

    3. SLU won the one and only gold medal awarded at the Olympics for American Football.  American Football was an exhibition sport at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.  Since no other countries played American Football, club and college teams signed up and competed.  SLU won the competition and was awarded gold medals for their effort.

The forward pass game was against Carroll College (Waukesha, WI) - my parents both went there! Also, it recently changed names to Carroll University.

  10. We have two players that I assume will make every shot they take. A pretty fun change of pace from the Crews years.

Perkins and Jimerson can score on any given possession, while Goodwin and French turn broken plays and missed shots into high percentage chances. And it’s not like the other guys are scrubs, everyone else can get 10pts without it being surprising.

We have balanced, deep scoring for the first time since Cody and Kwamain graduated (and neither of them were paragons of efficiency).
