  1. To remind everyone of the words in our sacred Scriptures: "Starting is for high school."
  2. For the record, I was speaking generally over his career, not any specific time recently. He occasionally makes fun of the shoot-for-cash kids. I'm pretty sure I remember him saying something during the up-the-stairs run about a contestant's weight. A high-class program doesn't let its public representatives says anything about its patrons that could even remotely be considered derogatory. And, as we all know, he's simply a crappy basketball announcer, especially for someone with a 30-some-year career in professional radio. All that said, and given my quite regular attacks on him on this board, I have to add a personal note. I did a chicken-wing-contest gig with Guy (he wasn't in the 'fetz, so I can call him by his uncorrectioned name here) several weeks ago and he has a wonderful public demeanor for a celebrity and is charming in person. One of my friends and co-judges brought his kids into the judging area to meet him and Guy really couldn't have been any nicer. But the issues are separable. Can you imagine someone like Gus announcing games at Notre Dame or Marquette or Creighton or Gonzaga? Maybe some of y'all have seen stuff like his errors and antics in other college arenas, but it's simply amateur, and it reflects on the lack of demand for high performance from everyone that has defined our athletic department's personality forever.
  3. I had really, really hoped to get my grandson, Bolesław Kuczewski, entered into the baby race this year, but he has just started walking.
  4. I shall use it in a sentence: We blew our momentum when Bishop LOFTed that pass to Reggie.
  5. I thought the guy, no pun intended, who subbed at one of this year's games was very good. Pretty much what I think an announcer should be. He did make one screw-up, but he only announces occasionally, whereas Gus has been announcing for what, 20 years, and he makes several screw-ups per game, not to mention the unconscionable derogatory comments by a PA announcer.
  6. And the hits just keep on comin', so to speak. http://www.kmov.com/story/33827511/missouri-wide-receiver-dilosa-arrested-suspended
  7. Interesting. How is this reflected in your Billiken Club point total in terms of "years as a season ticket holder"? I was pretty annoyed when they didn't let points transfer when tickets were "passed down" from one generation to the next. I paid for two of my parents' four season tickets probably for 25 years but had to reset to zero after my dad died a year or two before the 'fetz move. I'm pretty sure the marketing professor in him would have chosen the value of goodwill to extra-long-time season ticket holders over the expected value of freeing up new seats for each new generation -- but I'm also pretty sure that the marketing professor in him is the primary reason I get so ticked at the seemingly endless progression of boneheaded marketing moves by the athletic department.
  8. Wow, British Barbie. We're such an erudite bunch.
  9. Well, in the old days, they did. I attended my first 10 years or so of Billiken games on faculty-discount season tickets. They were half price, maybe less, of regular season tickets. For quite a while they tended to be center-court behind the student section, which was center court next to the floor back then. That changed after the Arena-Kiel-Checkerdome-Kiel move, but the faculty seats will still pretty darn good. Between the lack of overall tradition and the fairly crappy way the faculty has been treated in the past 20 years, bringing that perq back would seem to be a no-brainer. But this goes back to the whole "oh, we're going to sell out all the time, we need to have as many seats available for season tickets as possible" mentality that was prevalent when we moved from TD Scotkielvis to the 'fetz. (A parallel mentality to the "students will come to games if we have an on-campus arena" mentality.)
  10. Clearly, someone in the SLUnatics reads the board. SLUnatics ‏@SLUnaticsSTL 16m16 minutes ago SLUnatics Retweeted SLUnatics And that date is incorrect. We are hosting the tailgate SATURDAY. Time is still the same: 5-7.
  11. With luck, someone caught it yesterday and fixed it.
  12. OK, someone please check me on this, but I just went to the Billiken Ticket Office page. Clicked on 2016-17 Men's Basketball Single Game Tickets. Clicked on Continue to the right of 2016-17 Mens Basketball (the one with the Billiken head next to it). Got this: This item currently does not have available tickets for purchase. You can check back later or click the 'view all events' button to see all other items for sale. I can kinda sorta tell why -- the one on the buy tickets page is supposed to say 2016-17 Mens Basketball Season, as does the corresponding entry on the women's page. Only it doesn't. And it's the first thing someone trying to buy single game tickets sees. (Not to mention the link from the Billiken Ticket Office page says "Single Game Tickets.") Does anyone down there ever test any of this stuff, if nothing else than for Schitzengiggles?
  13. Yeah, but at least you and the tutor don't have your work broadcast to thousands.
  14. He just announced that he's transferring to the University of Colorado.
  15. This just popped up on my Facebook feed. From Amazon, no less.
  16. Hey, that said, what about the mini-EIU who would bring the ball up dribbling, remove his hands from the dribble and let the ball bounce at least twice (while he was moving) and then resume his dribble. I can't prove it, but I think that's travelling.
  17. That's what I was guessing, which means the band has been incrementally shrinking. But come January, it'll start incrementally increasing at a much faster rate. All good.
  18. He's just talking about guys who played HS ball in Indiana.
  19. Has the band been incrementally shrinking over the past few games?
  20. As for lineups, at one point the lineup we had in had something like 52 of 57 points. At another time the entire five had 2 points.
  21. Reggie got clocked with a flagrant, 3 refs miss it
  22. Bishop showing tremendous awareness after receiving inbound with 5.6 seconds left. (Not.)
  23. Point of order: It's Youcoubou. It must have always been misspelled in programs, rosters, etc. Luckily, Gus caught the error and corrected it during Ash's entire career at SLU.
