I didn’t take it as the top spenders had to increase what they were spending.  Just that players that had a great years got huge increases.  I’m assuming players that had bad years took decreases.  But to your point I think it’s going to have to cap out at sometime.   I also wonder now if there will ever be a “salary cap” with NIL?

I find it hard to grasp that even the biggies, P5, with FB programs to fund as well can maintain big paydays for their hoops programs. 22 starters and 40+ backups for FB programs shooting for national championships  is going to tax even the big $$ alumns/supporters over time. Yes, they have a lot more of these types than the rest of us, but I don’t think even their well is that deep. Plus, they have to support full athletic programs, ie 20+ men’s and women’s teams. I’m sure those players will start saying, “hey where’s my check?”.

  2. I think NIL was intended for players to be allowed to cut endorsement deals with businesses and receive royalties from sales of their jerseys and when their likeness was used. Fair enough. But soon enough it gets distorted and has become play for pay with no little or no strings attached. Yuri supposedly returned to SLU for NIL $$’s, does anyone recall if he did commercials or made appearances on behalf of any local businesses? Same for Gibby last season. The NIL largely did away with under the table arrangements. Combined with the no limitations portal college athletics has now become a version of the Professional Sports Free Agent period without the player having to enter into any legal contract. Nice work if you can get it.

  3. If SLU had a shot at landing a Love type FR, they should sign him. He’d at least give you a boost for one season. And if you can find the NIL $$’s to keep him, great, a bonus. It’s recruits like last year’s FR class that are the problem. Take Curcic for example. He always impressed me as a smart strong player with a good shot. But Ford just didn’t use him enough. No surprise he leapt into the portal. I guess Harriman’s departure didn’t help as both ended up here in Charleston. Still, I think a lot of FR like him will take their shot at the portal for a better playing opportunity or to earn some NIL $$’s. Medley’s another example. Why did he find the portal attractive? He came here for Ford. Ford goes he goes. Is Kent St gonna shower him with NIL $$’s? I doubt it. Again, a guy who improved at our expense and now taking it somewhere else.
This is what college sports has become. Every team may see wholesale roster turnovers every year. It sucks, but it’s the new reality.
I don’t even think Schertz could have kept the ISU 5 together if he had stayed given ISU’s lack of NIL $$’s. I think he knew this and was a big factor in his decision to jump ship.

  4. Why waste the effort and money on HS players below the top 25 line? They will likely seek new homes after 1 year; eg Medley, Curcic, Zhang, and Bussell. While I didn’t dislike these players and thought there was some potential they really didn’t add much to last season. The focus for every team has to be on the portal. Calipari learned his lesson. Five 5 star FR didn’t do much against 20-21 year old experienced players. NIL and the Portal have created a whole new ball game. I don’t like it as has turned college sports into the professional arena. But you have to play the cards you’ve been dealt, so you learn to play the game.

  5. One would have to think the NIL budget provided was big enough to bring 3-4 of the ISU players plus retain Gibby. With 2 or 3 of the ISU players gone hopefully it will mean more to offer Avila, Swope, and Turnbull. I’m assuming here Turnbull is a fit for Schertz’s system.
Now, as for PG I’m a little confused as to who we are targeting. We need one preferably two. Any ideas who they are?

  6. For most of his career Gibby got stuck in the corner with no picks or screens to help him get open looks. He’d run the baseline and Yuri would hit him with the occasional pass for a layup. Ford just never schemed for him, or anyone else for that matter, and it was frustrating to watch. I expect with Schertz it’s a whole new game for him. Go Gibby!

  7. Does Avila still have do not contact marker?
Is Gibby waiting to see what Cronwell’s gonna do before he makes a decision.
I guess it’s our fate that SLU fans must deal with anxiety when it comes to players as well as HC’s.

wouldnt it be something if ford falls into this?   i find it hard to believe but if everyone is afraid of the expectations and  pressure, who knows who they might resort to being their next coach.

I know some UK fans and they’re very happy Calamari is gone. And they often speak highly of Travis as an all time fave UK player. But when it comes to a HC not so much. UK’s kind of in a box. Still it’s  a blue blood program. I can’t recall, but is Cronin still at UCLA? If so, a little surprised his name has not come up. UK wants to shoot for an over the moon hire. Problem is there aren’t many out there, and those that are seem content with their current life situations. Kind of refreshing to see money isn’t everything these days.

The single biggest factor in SLU being successful in the new landscape and being able to take advantage of the changes and possibly getting into a better conference as a result is........WINNING.  Neither Chris May nor any other AD would be able to get SLU into a better situation if we continued down the road we have the past few years.  On the flip side, if Schertz gets us to Dayton level or better of sustained success, it will be that, and not any sort of skills that Chris May has or doesn't have that will get us into that better situation.  My point is that hiring the right coach and having the right facilities is what will get us to the next level much more so than any long term strategic plan to make that happen.

    And a healthy NIL.

Football makes the money, the ACC and Big XII will eventually be merged once the SEC and Big Ten pull teams from them.  None of them will merge with non-football schools, the revenue is in the football TV contracts.

I hope you’re right and I’m wrong. Then SLU would still have a shot at the Beast.

  11. I compare Avila more to Rob Loe than any recent big we’ve had. I remember Ben Howland commenting on Loe of how important he was to SLU’s success. Smart, good passer, good board man, and scores when you need it most. That strikes me as an Avila type.

If Chris May sticks around we're very likely to miss the opportunities of the continuing changing landscape of college sports. More changes are coming and the SLU AD was not prepared for the telegraphed changes everyone saw coming the last few years. So why would we expect anything different now?

The ACC is about to implode setting off more conference changes. The SEC/B10 partnership may cause a schism with the NCAA and develop affect basketball only schools.  NLRB rulings and other court rulings may bring changes in athletes status.

Lacking leadership and vision makes it hard to navigate these complex situations. Lacking organizational skills makes it hard to run an organization effectively during times of change. The skill of sucking up to rich donors, raising funds and spending their money is just one part of the skillset needed to be a successful AD.

"Grumpy Old Men" is your attempt to minimize the importance of those criticizing the lack of effective leadership. Some of us want SLU to be relevant, we haven't been for the last 10 years directly due to May. One hire, a good X post and press conference, doesn't mean you can navigate the upcoming difficult changes. Concerns about these changes are at the fore front of schools with much more money/influence than SLU, see the B12 doing everything they can to stay relevant. Can we claim SLU and the A10 is doing the same?

Tha A10 clearly isn’t thinking out of the box in the climate you describe. If the ACC does indeed implode I expect the remnant teams will seek to merge with the Beast and form a hoops super league. That would likely slam the door on SLU’s dream to someday be admitted. No way will the media and AD’s ignore how many national championships those two leagues have produced over the years. So no matter what governing body takes over the hoops tournament for the national championship you can bet those schools would be included. So, how do mids navigate those waters will be key to SLU’s future?
The current College FB landscape, no NCAA management, will likely be the template for college hoops the bigs will adopt. The pot of gold is too big and will only grow bigger. Whether or not we can finagle a way into the party is the major issue that should be our primary concern.

  13. I’m up in the air as to how many P6 schools will put us on their sched. Will they look at us a good W or a really bad loss? Until we get our roster squared away I wouldn’t expect much news on our non con games.

Are you capable of being happy about anything for a brief moment ?

I’m excited about Schertz. I think we hired Rick Jr. But right now there’s a lot of uncertainty in the college hoops world. Things will eventually come into focus especially in the A10. I do think if we land the 3-5 ISU players we’ll be a top 4 program. But as we’ve seen top 4 in the A10 guarantees only 1 bid. For a 2nd bid we’re gonna have to go like 15-3 and finish first or second. Then at least have to make the championship game in the tourney. My crystal ball can’t see that far out today.

  15. The portal is wrecking college BB. The NIL ain’t helping either. Bad time to be a HC when you have this kind of turnover in your rosters. No wonder guys like Saban and Wright quit the profession. Yes, you might get upgrades but then you have to mold your new talent into a team. It’s the rare coach that can do this quickly.
