Quality Is Job 1
On another message board (okay, okay -- it's my own) I start a discussion about Katz's statement that Baylor should shun players who've made mistakes. You can read it here: http://www.tedministries.com/cgi-bin/dcfor...orum=DCForumID1. Later in the article referenced in the posted link, Katz writes: >>>>>>>>>> "You need to build a program, not a team," said Maryland's Gary Williams, who did exactly that in College Park, replacing Bob Wade after three tumultuous seasons following Lefty Driesell's ousting and Len Bias' death. "You have to get on solid foundation and get the right kind of kids who will represent the university on and off the court." The reason we are where we are is that we just tried to build for the future, not win in the first year." "You're going to have a lot more people watching and the margin error is thin," Williams said. "You need to get players who are going to work hard. Hard work can beat talent." I believe that's what Brad Soderberg plans to do at SLU, though I think he expects to turn the Billikens program into a winner in a shorter period of time than it took Gary Williams at Maryland. Basketbill
I do not know much about Maryland's program, but i would view Stanford, Gonzaga, Marquette as example of hard work by coaches making their program's outstanding. I agree this seems to be the type of program Brad is building. I think Quin would like to be viewed this way, but his short cuts seem to be coming back to harm him.
