We are about to be forced out of CUSA...

None of this is breaking news, but note the following quote: "Tulane president Scott Cowen said C-USA had three objectives in expansion...third is to develop a conference where all schools play football."

This may mean that our exit fee will be negotiated or waived.

C-USA to meet with SMU about expansion

League's presidents approve plan

By KEITH WHITMIRE / The Dallas Morning News

Conference USA's presidents approved an expansion plan Tuesday and authorized commissioner Britton Banowsky to extend invitations to schools.

SMU has had talks with C-USA regarding expansion and speculation is high that the school could receive an invitation along with fellow WAC members Rice and Tulsa.

SMU president Gerald Turner said he was contacted by Banowsky, who will be in Dallas as soon as Wednesday to meet with him.

"Conference USA has expressed an interest in us," said Turner, who said he did not know if SMU would be extended an invitation. "We'll have to look at the offer, if they offer us anything."

Turner said any conference move would have to be approved by the SMU's athletic council and board of trustees.

Rice president Malcolm Gillis also confirmed Tuesday that he has been contacted by Conference USA, but no formal invitation has been extended.

Tulane president Scott Cowen said C-USA had three objectives in expansion. The first is a tighter geographic fit. Second is to add schools with similar academic objectives, and third is to develop a conference where all schools play football.

Cowen would neither confirm nor deny schools included in C-USA's expansion plan, but did speak positively about SMU.

"You have to ask yourself, does an SMU fit that profile?" Cowen said. "And from my perspective it does."

In a statement, Banowsky said no members have formally withdrawn and no new members have been added. The Big East is expected to announce Nov. 4 its addition of C-USA members Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville and Marquette.

South Florida has also been mentioned as a Big East target with Sunday's announcement that Boston College is leaving for the ACC.

Staff Writer Calvin Watkins contributed to this report.

Good ridance to CUSA...our Bills have been swimming in the shark tank for awhile. If the A-10 does become our new conference home, we can get out of the shark tank and be alligned with a number of schools with a similar philosophy to SLU's.

I think I remember reading the CUSA exit fee was $500k (with appropriate notice). How fortitious that CUSA wants us to leave! Maybe we can really make a deal out of it and talk CUSA into also promising us some accrued NCAA hoops money as part of the exit agreement.
