dewey33
its about our mascot, but so...? http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=darcy/060203
slu72
I'm tired of our mascot always being mentioned as unique. Hopefully, that will not be our claim to fame for many more seasons. Besides, I think the team with the weirdest name is Georgetown. What the hell's a Hoya? I think it's a rock or something. Yet they use a bulldog as a mascot. What's up with that? Billiken Rich
Yeah, God forbid we celebrate Billiken uniqueness. Why don't we change our names to golden eagles that'd be great!
Billinikens
Official Georgetown explanaion of a Hoya: The official explanation holds that there was a baseball team at Georgetown called the "Stonewalls". It is suggested that a student, applying Greek and Latin, dubbed the team the "hoia saxa" — hoia is the Greek neuter plural for "what" or "what a", while saxa is the Latin neuter plural for "rock". Substituting a "y" for an "i"; "hoya saxa" literally means "what rocks". Didn't explain much to me.
