courtside
ahhh....the innocence of high school sports..... PEORIA, Ill. -- Brawls at supersectional games in Chicago and Edwardsville earlier this week prompted tighter security Friday at Illinois' Class AA basketball finals in Peoria. Extra police officers patrolled Carver Arena, and metal detectors screened people entering the March Madness Experience, an event with sports-related games that draws thousands to an exhibition hall adjacent to the arena in Peoria's Civic Center. Kirk Gibson, assistant director of the Illinois High School Association said he did not know how many additional police officers were on hand. He said the organization, which stages the annual two-day finals, beefed up security to make sure fans felt "this was going to be a safe tournament this weekend." "It's really something we probably should have been doing other years," Gibson said. Police said rival gangs apparently were to blame for a large brawl that broke out during a boys high school state tournament basketball game at Chicago's United Center. Two people were sent to hospitals after Monday night's fight. The fight involved dozens of people, and security teams at the United Center called in Chicago police for help. In Edwardsville on Tuesday, an Alton High School student was stabbed after the supersectional game against Carbondale Community High School. Police investigating the incident said about half a dozen fights broke out in the parking lot after the game. Police are looking for two suspects, possibly former CCHS students, officials said. courtside
PEORIA -- Junior all-stater Jon Scheyer fired in 35 points Friday as Glenbrook North cruised to a 68-47 win over Brother Rice in the Class AA quarterfinals in Peoria. Scheyer, who scored 48 points in Tuesday's supersectional win over Waukegan, hit two 3-pointers in the last minute of the second quarter as No. 7 Glenbrook North stretched a one-point lead to seven at halftime. Scheyer, a 6-6 guard and first-team all-state choice, also had 12 rebounds and five assists, outdueling another first-team all-stater, 6-3 senior Bobby Frasor. Frasor, a North Carolina recruit, finished with 16 points and five assists. Glenbrook North (30-2) wore black patches on their jerseys for the second straight game as a tribute to Dawn Weber, the mother of Glenbrook North coach Dave Weber and Illinois coach Bruce Weber, who died last week. Brother Rice, making its first ever quarterfinal appearance, finished the season at 26-5. Glenbrook North will play either Rockford Jefferson or Lincoln in Saturday's semifinals at Peoria's Carver Arena.
