davidnark
Corner soon could become developer's field of dreams By Linda Tucci Post-Dispatch 02/10/2004 The northeast corner of Grand and Lindell - a portal to the midtown arts district - has been masquerading as green space since St. Louis University bought the block and razed its dilapidated buildings. The field won't be fallow much longer. Vice President Kathleen Brady reports that SLU is working feverishly on a mixed-used project that will give the prominent corner the big-city ambiance it deserves. "This is going to be a dense urban development that will set a standard for the city," she says. That means street-front retail - drive-throughs need not apply - with residential on the upper floors and structured parking acting as a buffer in between. Plans call for about 42,000 square feet total and probably four stories. The university has hired Chicago developer McCaffery Interests Inc. to get the job done. "There will be nothing suburban about it," says Clayton McCaffery, who sees midtown as St. Louis' best opportunity for a vibrant and urban atmosphere. "All the infrastructure is in place: the streets, the buildings and the anchors. And you have residential immediately to the east and west - the river doesn't get in the way. You can't have an urban center without people living there."
Lobo
Appreciate the update on the growth of SLU's campus. This sounds like an innovative project that will promote both the city and the U.
