2/24/07-- Hornets Fly High Past Spatans on Senior Day

The Hornets went into Saturday’s game with a lot of incentive, one was to add to a 2 game win streak on Senior Day and most important to have a chance to host its first playoff game on Tuesday. The Hornets accomplished both of those goals by knocking off Missouri Baptist 79-67. The win pushed the Hornets overall record to 10-18 and 8-6 in the American Midwest Conference, finishing them in 4th place, and giving them a home game Tuesday night.

The Hornets got off to a sluggish start when Missouri Baptist hit two quick 3-pointers to start the game for a 6-0 lead. The Hornets would wake-up quickly as they tied the game 10-10 on a Carmon Weaver jumper with 13:33 left in the first half. The first half will continue to go back and forth, and saw the Hornets with a narrow 30-28 lead at the half.

The Second half was all Hornets as they score the first 17 points of the second half extending their once slim 2 point lead to a commanding 47-28 lead. The lead for the Hornets would grow as much as 20 points, but the Spartans could only bring it down to as low as 12 points, losing 79-67.

Chanel Ross led the Hornets with 18 points, 9 assist and 8 steals. Laniya Stevens a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Hornets will host their first home playoff game since the American Midwest Conference started, Tuesday, against Hannibal-LaGrange at 7 p.m.

>Is this the 10-18 team you were touting at the beginning of

>the year? Didn't they have some D-1 players in your opinion?

Yeah, check their schedule. They played all D2's and ranked NAIA schools. That was too prepare them in conference. Most of their wins are in conference. That's why they played the toughest NAIA schedule in the nation. We do have a D1 player, Laniya Stevens. She played for SLU. We are retiring her jersey tonight. She's the best player we've ever had and I'm happy that she was able to be apart of this historic moment and historic team. She's been one of the nations top scorers this year. Our pg Chanel Ross can play for a lot of D1's. We also got a couple of transfers from Mineral Area that had low D1 offers, but wanted to stay together so came here. The team lost by 4 pts to then #1 ranked Emporia State. They also took Xavier into overtime. They beat the top 2 teams in the conference, McKendree, and Columbia College. At Harris-Stowe we have almost wholesale changes on the team almost every year. This is a huge step for the program to earn the right to host a playoff game because you finished in the top half of the conference. This is only the 4th year with an on campus gym.

Tydrell still goes there and has 2 years of eligibility left. Laniya had her jersey retired tonight and she is credited with turning the program around. She gave a glimmer of hope in the 1st year of the on-campus gym, and the program went horrible to earning a 1st rd home game and now a home playoff win. All this during her tenure. She's currently 1st all-time in points, steals, and rebounds.

Good for Wash U, I remember that incredible win streak they had a few years, and the challenge to break UCONN's record. I wish them success and hope they can get back to that level soon. I will keep you posted when I find out who the Harris-Stowe women advanced to play.

Former SLU guard Laniya Stevens named 1st team All-conference. Chanel Ross also made First team and guard Kanisha Pettis made honorable mention all-conference. Every playoff win has been a historic win for the program. They have won 6 straight and need 5 more to win the national title in their first national tourney appearance.
