    How old is old guy

This is a fact, not conjecture. After age 65 the people that die first are those with the greatest disease burden already present. Those that live the longest have the smallest disease burden present at age 65. Do not worry about this everybody develops a level of disease burden as they age and at the  same time your organs age and lose functional reserves. This is an ongoing process, NOBODY can avoid it. Of course there are those that die earlier than they  could have from accidents or homicide.

A fair number of old people reach age 70, and a large portion of everybody reaching age 70 may reach age 80. However the vast majority of those reaching age 80 will die of various causes before they reach age 90. And IF you reach age 90 the probability of getting to age 100 is negligible. The state of Ohio did a survey in the early 2000's trying to find how many centenarians were alive in  Ohio,  they found a grand total of 132. Ohio has a lot of people in it. People reaching age 100 are a rarity.

The old lady reaching 100 was interviewed by the press. She was asked what was best about being 100. She said "No peer pressure."

Joking aside, I am close to 80 and being realistic, I do not think I am likely to reach 90. Am I concerned?, hell no. You cannot stop nature.

  2. Wiz, computers work processing data which is actually defined by prior events and actions. People do not, people have a conscious part, which is what determine actual events,  and a vast subconscious part which determines how to define what is passed down and creates the conscious level. We, people living in a conscious world, have little knowledge of what is going on in the subconscious. However the subconscious is the determinant part of our perceptions and knowledge. What we consider reality, is only real up to a point.

Read "Incognito" by David Eagleman. He is a neuroscientist at Baylor and leads the Laboratory for Perception and Action as well as the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law.  Very interesting, this short book really raises questions about how people make up their minds about everything. This is NOT the concept that people act to improve their lives, what determines how people believe and act like is done in a very different and hard to understand subconscious manner. Cheap read, $15 in paperback, Vantage Press, very worthwhile read.

  3. Nope, what the Germans did,  followed immediately by the Italians, was to declare war on the US right after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. If you want an egregious example of crass stupidity, there it is. Hitler and Mussolini "Stupidus Maximus."

It is like a 12-20 season just never happened.

May needs a home run hire to keep his job.  Anything less with his track record and he's fired in disgrace.

Torch, Pestello is quitting next year, who is going to fire May if he screws up again? I do not think Pestello is likely to fire May. I think May will probably stay until the new President takes over and decides May has to go.

Oh he absolutely is.  Nothing to back this up but you don’t look like this and go to church

Now, that is interesting. Does this mean that a holes or at least a hole looking people are not allowed in by the Church? I doubt that, I have seen a lot of a hole looking people in Church.

  6. The home court facility for Indiana State U is Hulman Center in campus. This facility was fully renovated in 2020, it is a very nice facility. that seats 9,000. The facility being used for the NIT tournament is not the Hulman Center.

Of course the money that is distributed by the NIT is the money that goes to the NIT, not the ticket sellers. I have no idea if they include the TV money in the distribution or not.

    What a racket

Just to make sure everybody is aware of this. The NIT distributes the money from ticket sales, after expenses, among the schools playing at the tournament according to the number of games played. 25% off the top goes to the game winner, the rest is distributed equally among all schools playing at that level. The NIT also pays for transportation to and from the tournament games, plus staying at the tournament site (room, board, etc) for schools attending. A significant portion of your $100 per seat goes to the schools playing.

  8. At least, I keep you guys entertained trying to figure out that I am myself and no one else.

Now we know Utah will be playing against ISU. If they play like they did tonight Schertz's announcement will be coming  soon after that game. Utah ripped VCU to shreds.

Sometimes I wonder if Old Guy is Putin.

And what would Putin  be doing in the SLU board? He has much to do at a much higher level than I will ever reach.

I choose my wife because she has a nice rack. It’s worked out so far.

I do know one thing, if I turned down a job paying 2.5 million for a job paying  800,000 I’d have to find a new wife.

You have confirmed that money is much more important to you than most other things. Everybody is free to think and have his/her own preferences.

I like to go about these things by asking, what would a rational human being do?  Through most of this process, Mr Schertz has been revealed as a rational human.

    1.  His friend is interested in the UofL job, but receives death threats from that crazy fan base.  Schertz, seemingly acting as a rational human, probs doesn’t want to be exposed to that too.
    2. Why would Schertz pass on a significant pay raise for one last hoorah at a salary that may be comparable to the SLU offer, but doubtful.
    3.  Most rational people prefer certainty (a significant pay raise over several years) vs uncertainty (coming back for one year and if things backfire, his chance at that same significant raise could be gone)

And one last thing, who the heck wants to live in Terra Haute when you can live in St Louis and enjoy all the Bud Select you’d like?

I have an interesting question for you laker 119. I assume you are, or have been married. Think back upon the time you were choosing your wife. Why did you marry her and not someone else? Most people, rationally or irrationally, chose someone sometimes for reasons they do not fully understand. And there is the answer to your question at least a portion of every major life choice is not fully rational or fully understood. There is something inside you saying "this is the one."

Take the economy for example, long ago in the XVIII century it was presumed that people always decided upon what was best for them. This is incorrect, a lot of decisions are made without a full understanding of something or the other that may or may not be what is best for the person making the decision. Everyone that has divorced understands this concept.

What makes you think that Schertz decision will be totally rational?

  12. Cincinnati came close but lost the game. I was hoping for ISU to lose, after all, most of the game ISU was behind, but they won. I had hoped the announcement would be out tomorrow but not now, we still have to wait. Too bad.

  13. This is an amazing thread. There are people swearing their confidence that Schertz is coming to SLU, and within a day or so there are discussions as to how much would have to be paid by anyone else getting him as a coach to break the contract. A figure of about $3M appears to be required.

From my point of view, getting $3 M from Schertz or the other school to break the contract makes sense only if we have another good coach ready to step into the job at SLU. If May is as I think he is, we may get the $3 M but another good coach for SLU may not be so easy to get. I really do not care who May is talking with, as long a someone is there IF Schertz walks.

  14. I do not wish to offend anyone, but after having read the discussion going on I do not feel certain we will get Schertz. I am also quite concerned that May is well on the way to blow this recruitment. However, I can think of something good coming  from May blowing Schertz recruitment and having no backup plan. I think that May could gain a pink slip andd be let go if he blows this recruitment.

  15. I do not care if you get exited watching these games, I do. Tonight I saw Texas AM vs Houston. Houston was ahead until the very end when TexAM started gaining. By the time 1.2 seconds were left, most of starters in both sides had fouled out. TexAM had the ball and Houston was 3 pts ahead. The ball went into play, TexAM caught it, lob'd it and made the three pointer within the 1.2 seconds giving them the OT. After the OT was close to the end Houston was playing with walk ons and TexAM was out of gas and lost the game. That was a hell of a game. I do not think any team in A10 could play any of these two teams.

If you cannot enjoy watching such a game, then what are you doing watching basketball? Betting?

  16. I quit this game with about 40 seconds left and Alabama ahead by 11 pts. I do not think they can win this one. Both teams Alabama and GC played an incredibly physical game. Tennessee better get ready to put more than their normal 100% effort the next game.

Watched a lot of the ISU game today. Bottom line, bring on Dirty Schertz!! Love everything about his offense. Superb.

Billikenbill hundreds of thousands of people have seen his team play, do you really believe his only offer/interest is SLU's?

Old guy, who are some of your second choices for HC ?

As is widely known, my inclination is not sports. I know very little about basketball coaches and would not have the false pretense of having chosen my favorites. All I care for is to have a plan with options in case Schertz does not happen. There are plenty of people that know infinitely more than I do about coaches, I am happy to let them choose. However I do not want to be left behind picking up from the leftovers after all is said and done.
