Morrison More Kyle Korver than Larry Bird

I looooove what I've seen of Adam Morrison, I think he'll make a fine NBA player and I'm psyched SLU is playing his team. But let's not get nuts...it seems everytime there's a white college player who can score from the forward position the Larry Bird comparisons come up. Larry Bird averaged 30 points for Indiana State for THREE straight seasons. He averaged almost 15 rebounds for his career. His last year he also averaged almost six assists. And, lest we forget, he carried a bunch of nobodies to the NCAA Final in a matchup against Magic Johnson that still rates as a game for the ages. Morrison is averaging 28 points per game but only about 1 assist and six boards a game. The college game hasn't seen the likes of Larry Joe Bird since 1979...not white, black, red, blue or brown. I know, I know...Morrison has the shaggy hair and the cheesy mustache and he looks like he drives to the gym in a '79 Camaro. But that's where the similarities end. Larry Bird was absolutely TRANSCENDENT on the hardwood. Adam Morrison is a notch or so above Kyle Korver (who's doing quite nicely for the Sixers, btw). Let's not confuse Rex Hudler with Stan Musial.

i dont think dunleavy was near the take charge attitude guy that morrison is. a higher level of korver might be a better comparison at this point in morrison's career.

but let me remind all that the larry bird we remember likely played for the celtics or at worst was a senior at indiana state. i would bet the sophomore version of bird might not have even been morrison actually.

the thing about morrison that has me at least thinking about comparing to bird, is his take charge attitude, his overwhelming floor presense and brashness. i agree at this point he isnt bird talentwise even the college senior version of bird. but he is something to watch.

i am very eager to watch him tonite because what you never see watching on tv is what he does without the ball, how he handles himself in warmups, in the huddle, in stopages of play, etc. a lot about a player can be determined when technically nothing is going on, as well as what most focus on, like when he has the ball.

Roy...you and I agree on this, but for what it's worth...In his three years at ISU, Bird averaged 32.8 ppg, 30, and 28.6.

Morrison's year to year ppg is 11, 19, 28.

If Morrison DOES turn out to be the next Larry---fine by me.

But ask yourself this:

Do you see Morrison going to one of the NBA's worst teams and winning them a title in his second year with them?

Or ever winning three straight MVP's?

Dunleavy had 5 other NBA players on that team with him. How was he supposed to be a take charge player with Jay Williams who was the best player in college basketball along with Battier, Boozer, Jones, and Duhon.
