Honestly, that’s kind of what I’ve been thinking. Announcement or leaked to normal media tonight , with formal confirmation tomorrow.

Any suggestions on what night news to watch?  On Your Sidelines?

  2. Today brought back memories of that night in 1971 when our Billikens clinched the Missouri Valley Co-Championship. That one seemed almost anti-climatic. The intense game had been Thursday night’s defeat of Louisville. Saturday night’s game against Bradley had more the sense of a coronation, a game we expected to win to confirm what we had gained on Thursday.

Today was a bit different. After the disappointment at Xavier a good LaSalle team presented a real challenge that the Bills handled with their usual competence. At half time I had a really good feeling that was justified by the second half.

I really admire this team for the way it rebounded from the loss of Coach Majerus and the disappointment against Rhode Island to come together to “Crews through” the A-10.

Our seniors made this team something special. Kwamain Mitchell earned our respect by the way he dealt with the suspension, came back and made a great college career for himself and for the team. Even this year’s injury was not enough to mar a march to the championship.

Cody Ellis’ hard play is an important key that opened the door to glory. As my daughter says, “No matter what happens, poor Cody ends up on the floor.” The shots and passes he has made from the floor have been incredible.

Cory Remekun has added so much needed help as a big man under the basket.

To the whole team, thanks for the ride, now get back to practice. No more losses this year!

  3. I cannot remember a time when I did not know of Ed Macauley. I have often heard my parents tell of watching him play and how they would see him at dances while Dad was a student at Saint Louis U. As I grew Ed broadcast the Billikens and, I believe, other games as well. At the end if one Boys Classes Christmas Party at the Missouri Athletic Club, after we had played the games and had enjoyed the lunch, word spread through the locker room that “Ed Macauley is shooting baskets in the gym!” I thought of that today as I stood where about a dozen of us looked through the windows in the doors so long ago, not wanting to be seen staring, but not wanting to miss a shot either. When it was a real possibility that Billiken Basketball would be discontinued or downgraded to Division II, Ed was a member and face of the committee to advise the University on the question. Thank God, or thank Ed, we know how that turned out. As a season ticket holder I got to know Ed as he sat across the aisle from us and we talked in the old Kiel Club or in the concourses at Savis and the Chaifetz. I cheered as he was introduced many a time to commemorate triumph or another. I remember one time at the Savis when the 1948 team was introduced and we watched as boys ran around the arena collecting their autographs. Ed reached out for the program as one boy raced up the steps until he passed Ed to get to his teammate. I was so glad that we had Ed Macauley night last season and was thankful that we had enough tickets to get a bobble head for my mother.

Black arm bands, dedicate the season to Ed, erect a statue, they are all great ideas. Whatever we have done, and will do, for Ed pales in comparison to what he did for Saint Louis U. and for us.Until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

  4. This season it appears that security during time outs has heightened. For awhile guards would stand at the baseline during time outs. Tonight 3-4 persons, including a policewoman in uniform, would stand behind the Billiken bench. Is there any particular reason for this increased security?

  5. There are several that come to mind.

During my freshman year, 1970, we had a key game against Louisville. It was the second last game and, if we won on Thursday, only had to beat Bradley on Saturday for a share of the Missouri Valley title. It was a tough game but we won. I still remember the cheers, "Give it up Louisville, give it up!" Saturday's game was like a coronation. I got my picture in the newspaper for it. They were focusing on Coach Polk, but I was in the background.

I cannot remember the year for this one, but it was on a Sunday afternoon against Memphis State in the old Kiel Auditorium. Every seat was taken. It started as a shoot out between Harry Rogers and Larry Finch. Memphis got an 18 or 19 point lead, but we cut it to one before falling.

The game against Mizzou at the Checkerdome in, probably 1979 or 80. Mizzou was heavily favored and won in double overtime. After the game we had to go to the Arena Bowl to get a soda to restore my voice. Mizzou did not come back until 1999.

Mizzou game at the Dome in 1999. We gottem!

  6. I have a cousin in Madison who is a Badger Fan. When Brad was hired she said that she was just glad that he is not their problem.

Tonight I felt compelled to advise her of tonight's score along with Brad's Christmas wishes to all his friends in Wisconsin.

This may not have been the most charitable note, but, if it is a sin, there must be a Jesuit out there who will forgive me without the need to express sorrow.

  7. The April 25 edition of the Post-Dispatch reported the passing of long time Billiken fan and supporter, Bernie Mabry at the age of 96. A past President of the Tip-Off Club and a 55 year member of the Tip Off/Billiken Club Bernie was a regular feature at the games, during feast or famine, until age forced him ot move to Kansas City to be near his son.

    Bernie, Thanks for everything!

  8. Let's quit moaning about Louisville!

There is still good basketball to be played!

There is still post-season play to look forward to.

There are seniors to honor, players, cheerleaders, dancers and musicians.

    LET THEM HEAR YOU!
