I loved the Saint Louis Hawks when I was a grade schooler-most of what you read was it was 1958 or so when the NBA was integrated but on the 56-57 team John Barber who had played earlier for Cal State was our only black player. Alex Hanaum was player coach who did not get in a game but was eligible. Forgive me for mentioning Norm Stewart played in 22 games scored 10 points for the season and shot.267 field goal percentage. I can't remember but he must have played behind point guard Slater Martin who played every minute possible causing Norm to be unable to find the rim. Easy Ed scored over 1000 points and the other forward scored 1700 points plus was Bob Petit. The team also had Charley Share at center and Cliff Hagan who later became a Louisville Athletic director who unfortunately forgot it was an amateur sport and had booster problems. The next year or so Bill Russell reported to the celtics and Saint Louis fought Boston Bob Cousy led Celts for championships and Mc Cauley, Martin, and Petitit were our big guns.
