If 10,000 people start showing up to watch the SLU track team every meet, I can guarantee you the newspaper would cover the team. I'll agree that there are probably plenty of good stories out there, but trying to cover those teams on a daily basis, with already limited resources, just wouldn't make sense. If you read my last reply to you I said I would not accept on behalf of your audience an excuse of budget of time or money. Since this is St. Pat's I would say not since the time of the copyists such as in the "Book of Kells" have writers been considered better without doing anything that breaks the pattern already set.
