  1. I’m not going to comment on the long term vialbility of MM one way or another; but he does appear to have the team gelling at the right time.  Three wins in a row, two of them on the road, and one of them over a team that just beat our next opponent.

And we caught a true break avoiding VCU in the first round....

Finally, reaching back to the Maryland piece of this thread, Sasha always has a dangerous team.  Can never count them out irrespective of their overall record.   I’m still miffed they eliminated the last SLU team that actually had a shot at the overall...Vedad, DiRaimondo, Grazier, etc...

The A-10 has had their best year in men's soccer as a conference.  They are going to be a multi-bid league (4 teams currently have RPIs that place them in).  SLU's RPI is 43 with 2 wins and a tie over tourney teams with no losses to bad teams--they would be just outside RPI based tourney bids now.  The bad news is that non-RPI factors will be against them (some bad MOV losses like 4-0 at Dayton).  SLU's Massey rating (with MOVs) is 86. Their RPI success is clearly rooted in their strong schedule (BC is in a similar position) but IF they win 3 more games they may put themselves in line for an at-large bid (I know there would be no guarantees but they would have an RPI in 30's then).  SLU's profile is not overall great as they have a poor record and some multi-goal losses to mediocre teams but they have one quality road win (Fordham), one top 10 home win, and one top 10 home tie so finishing the season 3-1 may put them in the tournament.  It is something to play for.

The A-10 in women's soccer is extremely weak.  SLU women have a worse RPI than the men--they needed to go further in their tourney.

Nice post!  You are correct, the A10 is strong this year.  I still can’t believe VCU took down Maryland at Ludwig...amazing.  I still have nightmares related to that field...frozen tundra...

That said,  I  believe SLU only makes the NCAA if they win the A10.  Their record is simply too weak to make it in any other way....

  3. As per the box score, appears to have been a very even and entertaining match.  23 shots taken.

A shame the win did not impact A10 standings.  It’s going to take a minor miracle to make the playoffs....and then we face a team away that’s beaten us 4-0 or 3-1....things appear quite grim....

I believe article sums up perfectly the current position of USA soccer.

I also think Tilkowsky has it right when it comes to the MLS.  Promotion with a fee.  If unable to pay, no promotion.  An abbreviated version of this already exists in the lower levels of England soccer.  A team may win their respective division, but they do not achieve promotion unless they enjoy flood lights, sufficient seating, etc., whatever is required in the promotion parameters.  In many instances, due to these stipulations, the second or third place team at a certain level goes up rather than the winner.

Any the USA absolutely cannot support three first divisions.....no other nation in the world operates in this manner.

This, more than anything else, is the reason we sometimes lose to teams like T & T, and, when it counts, almost always come up short against teams such as Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Germany.

No question our top level soccer players are very good, even excellent, athletes;  the problem is our ELITE  athletes are not playing the game past age 15.  Hopefully  this situation will improve as national interest in soccer continues to rise, while  participation in football (especially at the youth level) and baseball falters.

Would a "moved to Bayern academy at age 14"  OBJ have helped our cause yesterday....  Coaching matters to a point but, as a famous coach once stated: "Give me Jimmy's and Joe's over X's and O's any day of the week..."

  6. Ramos and Porter are two guys who:

    1) Understand the game.

    2) Have the complete respect of their players.

    3) Are familiar with the maze that is USA soccer.  The flow here is utterly different from Paraguay or Argentina (Tata,)

That said, Tata is an intriguing character.  The fact he has been successful in the MLS leads me to believe he might have a chance.

  7. Tab Ramos, hopefully, will be named USMNT head coach shortly.  I also really like Caleb Porter.  I know a couple of kids still reeling from the 4-0 spanking his Akron team gave the Bills.  One guy told me it felt like they had 16 guys on the field.  The guy can coach.
