  1. This thread finally allows me to get a few things off my chest. The following is directed at the students at the university next year and in future years:

    1. You should show up regardless of whether the athletic department provides you with pizza or any other bribe. My friends and i used to walk down Grand to the sketchy Metrolink station and taken the train to games at Scottrade Center. You can walk across campus without the promise of pizza.

    2. The balloons they give you at halftime are for use in distracting the other team when shooting, typically free throws. They are not for making into hats, balloon animals or big blobs of nothing in particular. When the most fun you have at the game is when you get to make balloon animals, you are not a true fan.

    3. If we are losing, especially to a team we are not supposed to be losing to, please don't dance around like an idiot when it is dance cam time looking as if you are the happiest person on the planet. Not to be sexist, but this is typically the female students. Have a sense of timing. When the teams is losing, the dance cam is restricted to children and drunk older season ticket holding alumni. You may not realize this, but you really stand out when most of the students in the student section are stressed about the game and your doing the "lawn sprinkler" trying to get on the big screen.

    4. When the officials make a terrible call against us, make a big deal about it. Too many times, I see 90 year old men standing up and booing at the top of their limited lungs and, at the same time, half of the student section is checking their phones. You may not understand, but reacting loudly to bad calls does help sway the officials into sending a few calls our way.

I probably have more, but I can't think of them right now. I was happier with the students turnout this year than in past years, but the performance by the students this year was lacking.

  2. Indianapolis to UWV - 378 miles

Indianapolis to St. Louis - 245 miles

The difference is just not enough for us to be considered that much "closer" to home. Only chance is if he wasn't really all that serious about playing closer to home.

  3. This is great news. I've find that during my drive home I'm about 80% Strauss and Burwell these days simply because they talk basketball whereas 101.1 talks about the NFL draft. With Rammer on board that % is pretty much going to 100%.

I'm the same in that I've been pleasantly surprised about how much attention they've given college basketball and specifically the Billikens. Adding Rammer to the mix seals the deal.

  4. Terrence Jones

    Demarcus Cousins

    Patrick Patterson

    John Wall

    Marquis Teague

    Brandon Knight

    Michael Kidd Gilchrist

    Anthony Davis

    Archie Goodwin

    Eric Bledsoe

    Daniel Orton

    Nerlens Noel

All have been drafted in the first round from Kentucky.

    Darius Miller

    Deandre Liggins

    Josh Harrelson

    Doron Lamb

All have been drafted in the second round and are from Kentucky. Some of these guys didn't even score double digits while at UK.

Now I know that correlation does not equal causation. But as far as college basketball coaches go, Cal has about as convincing a case as anyone when it comes to offering a track record of getting guys in the NBA. Would I want Cal to coach my favorite team or would I want my son to play for him? Probably not. But if Tatum went there I would be confident that he would be drafted and drafted high.

Yes, but how many of these guys would have been NBA first rounders already if they were allowed be drafted out of high school. Calipari seems to get about four or five top 20 recruits every year, and nobody talks about the guys that aren't first rounders who would have been otherwise. Seems like the best you can do at Kentucky is hold steady on your draft stock, but there are many other situations where they lose ground by going there with so many other guys in the mix.

  5. Creighton jumping SLU is ludicrous.

Creighton won yesterday 72-71 at home over also ran Seton Hall (RPI 122), and was very lucky to win that game. If Creighton had been playing a better team, one that knew how to finish a game, Creighton would have lost that game, no question. Creighton missed 5 of 6 Free Throws in the last 3 minutes.

What this shows is the ceiling that SLU faces. SLU is in a situation that (merely) winning games is evidently not good enough. Creighton's home court win yesterday over Seton Hall is not nearly as impressive a win to an objective lens as SLU's win over George Washington (RPI 32). And let us not forget that George Washington defeated Creighton this season on a neutral floor. GW has a good chance at being in the NCAA Tournament; Seton Hall will be nowhere near the NCAA Tournament.

As for Butler, 2-13 in the Big East. I predicted Butler would be a Big East doormat/bottom feeder, but even I didn't think it would be this bad. Oh I know, Butler has lost all those close games. And so has George Mason in the A10.

Do you see the double standard here? Two crystal clear examples are given above in this post.

I propose we petition the new Jesuit Pope to reign down some fire and brimstone style justice on the Catholic 7 leadership for accepting a heathen school like Butler instead of a fine Jesuit institution deserving of a spot in the NBE.

    R. Onwuasor, Texas Tech --- 26 games, 11.8 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 1.3 apg.

AJ Riley, John Logan CC --- no stats available.

Trey Ziegler, transfer from Pitt --- to TCU.

Turner and Knight lead their teams (Ball State and Illinois State) in ppg.

    And to be fair:

    A. McBroom, SLU --- 25 games, 22.7 mpg, 8.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg. 1.9 apg.

    T. Lancona, SLU --- 14 games, 6.9 mpg, 2.4 ppg, 1.5 rpg.

    R. Agbeko, SLU --- 17 games, 5.6 mpg, 1.6 ppg, 1.4 rpg.

    M. Crawford, SLU --- 19 games, 7.5 mpg, 2.1 mpg, 0.6 rpg, 0.5 apg.

I watched Daishon Knight, on television, play for Illinois State against Missouri State a few nights ago. He looked very confident and very active. At the end of the game, he seemed to be one of the go to guys for Illinois State. Seeing him in that game makes me not surprised that he is averaging over 13 points per game.

That being said, I'll still take our three freshmen.

  7. Are people really saying he should be praised FOR THAT? What I see is more an acknowledgment of the poetic symmetry of finally making Top 10 on his birthday. He's getting credit for all the tangible things he did to turn the optimistic talk into a reality, not for saying "we'll be top 10" or for the random spookiness of happening to be born on the day the poll was announced.

I totally agree with what you said. IMO the praise for RM's statement should come because of what he did, before and after the statement, to make it come true. There's nothing special in simply making a prediction.

The same goes for Father B. He wanted us to be a top 50 program. He said so on the record. Then he did things that helped make the statement come true.

My recollection of the story of how Chaifetz got built is that Dr. C told the university that he wanted to repay the university for what it did for him, but left things open ended on how. Father B could have told him to build a new building for the school of allied health or pay to rehab the library or some of the dorms. Instead, he asked him use the money to build a basketball arena.

  8. G Town never sells out a game. U Conn, Syracuse, WV and Pitt are gone. Oh, I think I forgot to mention Louisville too. Providence is a really nice little town to visit as is Seton Hall right here in friendly Jersey. St John's can't even show 1000 folks at a home game at Barclays on a Saturday afternoon. G Town won't' be dancing this year, because their conference schedule is lame. X made a very bad decision and went for the bucks. They'll be the cream of the Big E when all is said and done. Creighton had to go. They are good for maybe one more year of relavance. Maybe they'll take Richmond and put them out of their misery next year. Once the big TV money moves where it needs to, you have a middling mid-major conference. Nova is a very good team that tends to get smoked badly as we saw yesterday.

Let's not forget the perennial powers Buter and DePaul. Marquette is 15-10 and has no chance for the dance.

Be careful what you wish for.

I have to agree with you about the A-10 versus the Big East right now. It's almost a push as far as quality of the league. Butler is way down after its coach left, which really burns us because they're a non-catholic school that took our place in the catholic league, and Creighton will be down soon when McDermott (probably both) leave. Villanova will probably not sustain its current success, which leaves the league hoping that its old traditional powers like Marquette and Georgetown return to former glory.

The important piece of the puzzle your not considering in your not so veiled plea for us to stay in your league is the proximity issue. The closest team to SLU in the A-10 is Dayton. The next closest is Duquesne in Pittsburgh. Our swimming team, softball/baseball teams, volleyball teams, etc. have to head to the east coast for almost every road game they play.

When we get into the Big East, we will have Creighton, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier, and Butler much closer to us than Duquesne currently is. For that reason alone, even though the current competition is about equal, we would jump ship in a heartbeat to go to the Big East. Plus, we'll make the Big East much better just by our presence.

  9. The hypocrisy laid out on this site is sometimes mind boggling. Above, I have heard that Father B doesn't deserve credit for predicting the program's success and should have gotten Chaifetz built sooner. Yet, in other threads, folks, rightfully so, are praising RM for predicting the program's success a few years ago and for building the program. I think we all agree that we would have liked RM to build the program up more quickly, but nobody's complaining since we are where we are.

The program built itself up to No. 10 in the country mostly with Father B as president. Is he solely responsible for that? Absolutely not. But there are 350 other colleges whose presidents have programs that are looking up at Father B's former program. Also, Chaifetz got built during Father B's tenure. When I watch the Billikens play in airplane hangars in Philly, I don't even think to criticize the university president of those institutions for not getting the corporate community to build a new arena during prosperous times. I'm just glad we have Chaifetz and thankful to everyone who made that happen, including Father B.

Bottom Line: RM and Dr. C and the players and Chris May deserve most of the credit for where we are. However, don't be ridiculous and argue that Father B doesn't deserve whatever credit, even if it's very little, that a university president is due when a program succeeds.

  10. Really???? Good luck with that.

Actually, good luck with your four stars, because our 2 and 3 stars are undefeated against your 4 stars over the past two seasons. If your 4 stars can't beat a bunch of 2 and 3 stars with that clearly superior HAVOK defense, there must be something seriously wrong with your program.

  11. this must be a joke! Our band is fantastic and much better than any piped in music for atmosphere. If you go to other arenas you can see how much better and louder our band is than most of the bands in the country!

I have to agree. I know there is a lot of sentiment out there for blasting piped in music during time outs, but that's not our program. I don't want to replicate an NBA atmosphere. I like what we have.

  12. WEAR THE F'ING SHIRTS

+ 1000. I got so many dirty looks last year in Section 102 yelling at people to put their free t-shirt on. All the old bags in their red, and brown, and navy blue, and purple sweaters looked at me like I was an alien.

  13. With any luck, sometime in the next 5-10 years student basketball season tickets will only be available by lottery, with class year and prior attendance the main factors in determining your lottery number.

That's what we had back in the 90's. I didn't realize that this was not still the case. We used to pay a relatively cheap amount to have reserved tickets for the entire season. The students who were interested in going to the games put in their application and a lottery decided who get the best seats. Doing this nearly guaranteed that the lower seats were filled with students who actually cared.

Why don't they have this system anymore, assuming they don't?

  14. I love everything that KM did for the program. However, the answer to the question is JJ.

Right now, and I'm just talking right now, not a four year career comparison, JJ is more of a force on offense than KM was at any point during his time here. Add to that that JJ is much more effective defensively (they gave equal effort, but JJ gets more out of his frame) and that JJ rebounds much better than KM ever did, and you have your answer.

Free throws - about equal. Mid range shot - about equal. KM's only advantage is in three point shooting and its not like KM was lights out. Again, not taking anything away from KM. He's one of my favorites, but what JJ is giving us is off the charts right now on both ends of the floor.

  15. I've got one due in late March. I can already see us playing in the second round game (the real second round game) and me not getting to watch because my wife is delivering during those exact hours.

There are TVs in delivery rooms now. Years later, you could tell your kid that that was the first thing that he or she watched on television.

  16. I was sitting in the upper deck for the first half of that game, but moved down to the SLU section for the second half. As time wound down in that game, and it looked more and more likely that we would win, the feeling amongst those couple of sections we had was bordering on euphoric. Probably the most enjoyable moment of my college basketball watching life.

Those two games were some of my favorite live sporting events of all time. I had my son who was 9 and my father, who recently passed away, with me. We sat in the SLU section. I remember being very upset with all of the Ohio State fans in the crowd who paid for seats and then sat on their hands rather than cheer up an underdog against their conference rival.

  17. Yeah, I think you used to have, in your signature, something about not beating dead horses, so I'm going to stay true to that and not take this bait. I have my own understanding of what happened that night and how it was handled, as I'm sure you have yours, and there's really no reason to bring it all up again at this point.

All I will say generally is that attitudes about rape in our culture, especially on college campuses and also with respect to law enforcement, are definitely not where they need to be.

But back to what our expectations were when Rick Majerus was hired.

As a law school grad myself, I'm a bit disappointed that you were prepared to assign a label such as "rape" based upon your own "understanding of what happened that night." I also have an "understanding" about what happened that night which is, like your opinion, based upon what I have heard from other people and not at all based upon what I know for a fact to be true. Because my understanding of what happened that night is not reliable as it is based upon many levels of hearsay, I don't use terms like "rape" or "innocent" when bringing up that incident, which I try not to do if possible. I strongly suggest that in the future, you use the same level of discretion.
