  1. Our bigs need to catch up with JJ's speed. How many times did he penatrate and dish off to Conklin and Conklin wasn't ready for the pass. JJ has it the others just need to recognize it too. ;)

As a basketball player you need to know who you are playing with and their abilities. JJ made a lot of really nice passes but when you fire a no look fastball at Conklin inside, you have to know the chances of him catching it cleanly is slim. That falls on JJ, not Conklin.

  2. Absolutely, our bigs need to get a LOT heavier and stronger, we struggled with teams with muscle up front.

Look at the NCAA Tourney teams, Seet 16 / Elite 8, as it progressed, most all had incredible muscle up front; some look more like football DE's.

I went to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games in St. Louis this year and was amazed how much bigger overall these teams looked in person than SLU. Tennessee, Mich State, Ohio State all had huge teams. SLU would just get dominated inside by these teams. (Ohio St. 6'8" 255, 6'9" 240, 7'0" 265)(Michigan St. 7'0" 250, 6'9" 260, 6'8" 280, 6'8" 230)(Tennessee 6'9" 246, 6'10" 278, 6'5" 232) We need added size/strength to our bigs to be able to compete with teams like these.

  3. With JJ you have to notice how fast he gets going; he needs to be able to dribble that fast.

I've been saying this all year. Jordan either needs to slow down or his skill need to catch up with his speed. He is a great shooter but there were too many times he would be out of control when handling the ball. He did a lot of great things this year but hopefully his ball handling skills catch up with his speed.

  4. JS problems are mental rather than physical-coaches need to teach him to move away from the ball and how to get to points that he can shoot from or

rebound to. He can block, he can finish if he is close enough; I worry that he will work out and quickness will be lost for strength. Many players are strong, few are as quick as he is and if he could dribble I would give him minutes as a slasher 3

Smith has physical issues as well. He's too weak to guard the bigs inside and too slow to put on the guards. He got pushed around alot this year on both ends of the court. He needs added strength to get more minutes next year.

  5. Agreed- at times Justin Jordan was SLU's best outside shooter. He added some spark on offense off the bench in some games and hit some very big 3's. I would hope he stays at SLU. SLU still has to score points.

Here's hoping Femi John stays too- SLU could use him to guard bigger guards.

Jordan was the best outside shooter on the team if you go by 3pt%. I hope and expect to see JJ and FJ in Billiken Blue next season.

  6. The NCAA's going 96 but from what I hear it may not happen for a couple of years. I'd agree, dlarry, I'd like to see them make it into the 64 next year.

Well, the committee meets at the end of april to make the decision to opt out of their deal with CBS or continue until 2014. It is either changing next year or, hopefully, in 2014. From what I hear all the experts saying, it is going to happen, most likely this year and most likely will be expanded to 96. We'll find out in less than a month.

  7. 4. How about Willie? I have seen projections that the center on VCU will go in the top 20 of the NBA draft. If Willie keeps his great atitude and works hard in the weight room and on the court he can definitely be better than Sanders by the time he graduates. When he and Cory R were in the game together it was very difficult for the other team to keep them both off the boards. Cory really improved over the season and it looks like he could be a solid 4 man against some teams with a big power forward. He will also be a very excellent backup center to Willie or Loe. Conklin and Jon Smith will need to really work on their games to improve to keep up with the other bigs this summer.

Willie, Cory, Cody, Jon all need to hit the weights hard this off season. Willie and Cory with added strength inside would be great to see next season.

  8. It can't be official until he signs a LOI. Spring signing period hasn't started yet.

I assume you mean he verballed. Where did you hear it?

You are correct, he gave a verbal commitment. He can still back out but Maj ain't gonna let that happen.

  9. I have actually been amazed at how well Willie has handled the ball.

He definetly has come along way since last season and throughout this season. I remember last year, the team was hesitant to even feed him the ball, especially Liddell The Third. He still needs to hit those weights this offseason, it will make his game and the team better.

  10. I don't necessarily agree. A good zone defense doesn't provide any rest. If you watch Syracuse, check out how active all of those players are on defense. Coach Majerus believes you can't be really good at more than one defensive system, so he just works to be really good at man-to-man defense. And rebounding out of a zone defense is problematic.

    Agreed

  11. Again, this was my thinking last night. Now after reading everything on here this morning, he is supposedly injured?

What is this mysterious injury? Out of gas? He looked like that and then some. He appeared to not have anything left in the tank--because he is a true hustler and role model for young players, but he also had major lapses in concentration. He just SEEMED to be very indifferent out there last night--which of course hasn't been the case all year. I have been on the fence with Cassity all year--usually being a defender, but last night I was anything but. Lackidasical doesn't begin to describe his effort. Now again if he truly were injured, then I fully give him a pass. I am just not aware of any injury other than being tired. Really? Is tired the reason? That is pretty weak--there were several other basekteball players out there that have been through just as much and didn't suffer the lapses. Maybe it was just an off night, but it was difficult to watch.

I noticed him begin to limp after he was taken to the floor in the first half, which happened on the same possession as and just before Conklin wrapped his arm around VCU's neck and threw him to the floor. Conklin drew all the attention, but Cassity began to limp at that point. Also, in second half shoot around, Cassity was clearly not himself and was favoring one of his legs the whole time.

  12. SLU is a one point dog at home tonight. We are 4-3 at home as underdogs. Wins against favorites Nebraska, Richmond, Dayton, and Rhode Island. One of the losses coming from MO State when we played without Mitchell and Ellis, another was the 2 point loss to X when Mitchell had an open shot to put us up by 1 at the end and the other was Temple.

    SLU 59

    VCU 57

  13. "Watching women's basketball is like watching old people have sex."

No one wants to see that.

I actually had this discussion yesterday while in the VIP lounge at the Edward Jones dome waiting for the game to start and they had ESPN on showing the women's tourney. There just isn't enough talent available. There truly is only a handful of elite players coming into the game each year--hence the same 2-3 teams win constantly. The best players keep going to those same schools year after year. The gap in talent is obviously huge from the very top to even just the number 10-25 teams in the country. UCONN has a 70+ game win streak going as proof.

For those of you with daughters, keep them palying. There is some interest in the game outside of those directly related to the players. Some of the games get decent crowds.

Watching women's basketball is like reading a post about someone being in the VIP lounge at the Edward Jones Dome.

    No one gives a shite.

  14. roy, brian doesn't look stupid at all. you should listen to the reasoning and logic and avoid the name calling. even if you don't agree with him, you shouldn't assume that you're right and jump all over him with your pathos argument.

brian's suggestion is a great idea if men and women are truly equal!

I hope you are being sarcastic.....Brian's idea is a terrible idea. Men and women are equal in the sense that they both have equal rights, but that does not mean they have equal athletic ability in all sports. Please tell me you are just joking.
