  1. No it is not - he is not the answer so don't be confused by the occasional win. My question is why has it taken Crews so long to figure out who his best guards are?

Hines showed a lot in the Bahamas and I thought there was some significance in him starting all three games down there. Then, when the season started and he wasn't getting off the bench, I thought maybe they had rewarded him for earning a scholly and letting him play a lot in the exhibition games. Now, it's clear he's the best PG on the team so the hard part is figuring why he was getting no minutes at all when you look at how poor our guard play, with a few exceptions from MR, has been this year.

  2. Cannot read too much into it but I actually liked this new lineup. Produce some defensive chemistry and you might have something on your hands. Or maybe not?

From an offensive standpoint I like it as well. Time to face the fact that our two best guards are Hines and Bishop. Unfortunately, our post play on either end is a joke, no one who can score, defend, rebound, or block shots. Has Neufeld made a FT this year? If so, he's probably under 10% and as bad as he is, he's our best 5 on the squad. We're basically playing 4 on 5 now and have little chance to squeeze another victory out of the season.

  3. Regarding Clock_Tower's post:

Point 1: Our bigs are not athletic at all, especially Gillmann and Jolly. How many recruits do you miss on before settling for a Jolly? I don't agree that rebounding is 90% of what you say. During my high school days, I could block out all day long but couldn't jump so how many rebounds do you think I got? Usually only the ones that bounced or fell my way. Our bigs are the same way, not athletic enough to compete on the glass with the likes of the Dukes' Lewis and Powell.

    2. Wouldn't say that Hines played major minutes in the first half. Most of his minutes were second half. Truth is, Hines doesn't look like a bad player. He's certainly a more conventional guard than MR or DR in terms of leading a team. MR tries to beat everyone off the dribble and DR tries to power past every one. MR couldn't throw it in the ocean tonight and DR couldn't do anything right. Can't believe how much he's regressed from last year. Hines is a solid PG, not great but it looks like he gets the team into the offense and keeps the ball moving well.

    3. We did score 58 points in the second half. It helps when you shoot 58% from the floor, 59% from the arc, and 90% from the line. Ash, Mike, and Bishop knocked down a bunch of threes and Bishop went 9-10 from the line. Bishop can both shoot and finish, which MR and DR can't. Keep in mind that Bishop was slowed by a broken nose for a month so may have fallen a bit behind early in the season. The other thing is the second half had little riding on it as it was 20 mins of garbage time. They knew they had to jack up threes so they did and made them with little pressure riding on it. It looks like our guys start games so tight you couldn't pull a needle out of their ass with a tractor. Second half they were loose and free because they weren't winning it anyway. Also, we bascially only played five guys in the second half, especially if you take out the 4 mins. of comedy gold we were treated to by Jolly. Looked to me like it became obvious that the only chance we had to narrow the gap was to play those five guys and those were the five who played.

    4. The screening rules have changed this year and make it very easy for refs to call fouls for "illegal" screens. Instead of the screener only having to think of himself, he has to coordinate with the ballhandler so the screen is set before the ballhandler starts to use the screen. Usually, a ballhandler won't wait long enough for the screen to be set so the screener is called for the foul. Not sure it's the players not paying attention to the coaches, looks more like screening is a more difficult proposition than under the previous rules.

    5. The fact is our guys ARE slow in terms of the lateral quickness needed to keep up with a driver. The scouting report on us is to drive it to the rim because we don't have anyone who can stay in front of their man. Desire, positioning, and technique are great, but speed and lateral quickness trump all that.

  4. Can't wait for the first serious "we didn't give up and played real basketball in the second half" post

The one thing you can say is that MR, DR, and MY didn't get off the bench in the second half. MY has been a disappointment but if MR and DR are your starting guards, your team won't be winning. Will be interesting to see if Bishop gets more minutes in the next games and how he performs. As far as that goes, Hines looks better than either of them.
