  1. Ok Roy. You have your mind made up. Nothing pointing out how the salary can be more than justified will change your mind.

The fact that the amount of money that the school system gets from state directly effects the health of the school system, that the school board believes that Bonner's name will open doors for in Jefferson City, and that the doors that will be opened belong to the people who decide if the funding level will be is a misplaced priority. The fact the Vashon is most high profile city school and they believe Bonner can help improve that school's tarnished image is a misplaced priority. That said school's image doesn't have a direct effect on the opinions of city voters and business leaders and that changing that image in their minds is a misplaced priority. If you don't believe all of the above has direct effect on the job the school system does on educating it students, you are wrong.

It's funding from the state directly effects the system in multiple ways when it comes to education. It affects the ability to pay quality teachers and administrators. It affects the ability to keep the buildings from falling apart. It affects the ability to provide computer labs and internet access. It affects the ability to provide books to the students.

Its image has a direct effect on its ability to educate to. It affects the ability to attract top teachers and administrators. It affects it with the voters when it is time to vote on tax and bond issues. It affects the systems when it attempts to attract business people to serve as mentors inside the system.

Is Bonner hiring going to fix the whole city public school system? The answer is no. The board thinks he can help and I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. I am willing to do that because I think the Vashon basketball program can generate the revenue needed to cover his salary.

  2. Roy you would be surprised what an inexperienced lobbyist can get paid. The pay is based upon the access to state house and senate members and their staff the lobbyist is believed to be able to deliver. It has nothing to do with experience or qualifications. They pay is based on the access you can deliver almost exclusively.

Also they are paying him for the good pr he brings to the school system. Bonner is extremely well liked by the big sports media figures in town.

Lastly if there is a high school basketball program that can justify the economics of such a large salary to a coach it is Vashon. The money that the program can generate from ticket sales, tournaments, apparel deals, special events (The Shootout) and possibly merchandise sales should be more than enough to offset the salary, cover team expenses, and leave some money left over for the school system.

  3. Cajun are you serious? Have you ever seen JJ in the Bonner League or at the summer scrimmages. He has the ability. His problem is if he has the heart to play at this level and if he can keep his head in the game long enough to succeed on this level. After the last two seasons I doubt he will.

But then again maybe you are a better talent evaluator than anyone on the coaching staff.

  4. When has Luke ever shown flashes of being a finisher. Don't tell me in summer scrimages and pratices. In summer scrimages and practices JJ has looked like a top power forward for three years and we have yet to see it in games. DP has looked like a great shooter in these and we have yet to see it in the games. They are two different beast.

  5. Roy said "however, polk is so small he gets over powered by many opposing athletic guards and/or gets posted up, polk will never be mistaken for a rebounder, while you claim he has better court vision, polk really hasnt given me the impression he will replace the likes of h waldman or even charlie newberry when it comes to passing the ball."

I maybe be wrong but I can't remember anybody overpowering Polk last year. He maybe short but he is pretty damn strong. Also, the staff kept him out of situations where he would get posted up. He may not have shown the court vision of H yet, but H did't get here till his jr year. Polk also averaged more assist per minute than Tommie, who you later say is the best passer and has H like court vision.

Roy said "as to beating the press, using one player to dribble through the press is probably the worst way to beat a press. good teams pass in front of the traps and can turn a run thru a press into an offensive advantage, that will never happen with one person dribbling down the floor."

You need multiple ways to beat the press. Sometimes the only way to beat it is to take it yourself. Polk also can beat any defender down court for a quick outlet pass.

Roy said "as to luke finishing, i agree with davidnark, luke is very athletic and runs the floor very well. there is a better chance that luke can score on the outlet with one man between him and the basket than polk. however, i recognize that polk does indeed have superior speed and might have beaten that same defender before he ever got the ball."

Did you forget about the times DP broke down his man and got to the hoop.

Roy said "last, luke is the absolute best free throw shooter on the team. if the opposing team in desparation fouls luke on the break, that is almost as good as two points in a shooting situation. polk is a coin flip."

Luke is not the best FT shooter. The teams best FT shooter is JJ. JJ shot 85.2% from the line. LM shot 82.8% from the line.

Also, I was shocked by this, DP had a slightly better FG% than LM last year. DP hit 32.8% of his shots. LM hit 32.7% of his shots.

  6. No not because he is white, but because he is not as fast as Polk when on or off the ball. Polk is one of the fastest players in college ball. Luke does not have the court vision Polk has. Polk is much better at forcing turnovers. Polk is much better at beating the press. With Polk not on the floor Tommie has to run the point and you lose an option as a finisher. I didn't say you couldn't run with Luke, but that the tempo would slow. Nice of you to try to turn it into a race issue.

  7. The most important key to running the ball will be someone stepping up at the four who can clean the glass. Next is DP ability to hit the jumper. I also believe that if we do run it will be better for us to have Tommie at the three and Dwayne at the point. Tommie with at a doubt is the teams best and probaly only true finisher. Danny has shown flashes, but only a few flashes of being a finisher.

  8. As it stands now with Brad's comments I think this will be our starting five to open the season:

    IV

    KL

    TL

No comment needed on these three. They are obvious.

    JJ

Brad's comments thus far say he is the starter at the 4. I think many of us would agree that it is not a question of talent, but rather if he has the heart and the ability to keep his head in the game.

    DP

If the team is going to push the ball like the staff says they will, he is your starting pg. The question with him is the ability to hit from mid and long range. His defense, speed, ball handling and ability to run the offense are known.

    The first off the bench:

    LM V2.0

We all saw the stabilizing effect he had on the team last year. Will get a ton of minutes. Will be moved into the starting line-up if DP's shooting has not improved. With him as a starter you move TL to the pg spot, but you will not be able to push the tempo as much at either end of the court. I can't wait to see how his new body translates to live game action.

  9. :) Billikens.com is happy to announce the first Meet Hardball Day!:)

Who: The one and only Hardball

    When: December 18, 2006

    Where: Scottrade Center

How to find him: He will be in the MSU family section. He will be the one telling Coach Hinson how to do his job, as the only double digits Blake sees are turnovers and missed shots.

Also Billikens.com is proud to announce the first meeting of the Overbearing Parents Who Hate Brad Club. Join founders Hardball and Kevin Slaten for a completely irrational discussion on the state of Billikens. The meeting will follow the Billiken victory over the Bears at a location TBD.

  10. People are not only writing off this season, but the next three. They are claiming all the freshmen are lost causes. People still can't let the Ahearn thing go. Some are bitching about signing standout citizen, standout student, and I believe our starting PG this year, DP. They think we should have signed Tatum instead. Tatum is a fine player, but it is becoming clear that his criminal numbers are quickly surpassing his b-ball numbers. We have posters saying that AD wouldn't have even started at Harris-Stowe. They think we should offer every kid from the area. We have a poster who keeps track of every recruit in the country and adds their decision to a list against SLU.

Everybody needs to calm down. We are not even a week into practices. Let's try to get a couple games into the season at least before we start making judgments.

NLOI day is still a little bit away. Let's see what happens before we trash this signing period.

  11. I think it is more important the effect it has on the players futures and not on the victory total. There have been way too many sad stories involving Vashon players over the last two decades. It's time for education to become the most important thing at Vashon. For the players and the school as a whole.

  12. Not to stick up for Footsie, but this is a SLU board. The Illini are recruiting for some of the same players we are. They refuse to play us. I see no need to feel sorry for them and Weber.

Verbals are non-binding. Coaches are allowed by the NCAA to recruit players after they give a verbal. I don't see this as being wrong at all. I know coaches don't like it because it means more work for them. The rules are what they are. If you call and the kid doesn't tell you to stop, you aren't doing anything wrong. You better not quit recruiting the kid just because he has given you a verbal. If you do, someone will sweep in and steal the kid.

  13. Hardball, I am not saying you don't bring some valid arguments. But, you don't concede that there are valid arguments on the other side.

Let face it our last two coaches quit. One left to go to another program. The other left because he was fed up with the situation here. If everything were great at SLU for a coach this wouldn't have occurred. I don't want to hear about Spoon leaving because of his health because that is BS. Anyone who knows him well will tell you this. He had it with the whole crew at the University. Don't tell about Zo leaving for his alma mater. If everything was great here he would have stayed just like Weber at IL, he didn't take the Purdue job.

XU has been a hell of a program for twenty years. It was not built by Matta or Miller. Gillen built it and it didn't happen over night.

You talk about Jeter at UWM. You think Brad gets recruits late, you would really hate Jeter. Just check out this link:http://uwmpanthers.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/090506aab.html . I would say that is just unacceptable for a team coming off a trip to the second round in the tournament.

I respect your thoughts on Ahearn and Frazier. How many tournaments has MSU been to with them?

I agree with you about Tatum. But, why don't we hear anyone ***** about the guys, Zo didn't recruit at all, that built that program?

  14. No we can’t compare ourselves to GU or MU. That’s where we want to be not where we are at our have ever been. How many final fours, sweet sixteens, and national championships does SLU have? None. Those two teams well they have them. The have been producing them for years. They were producing them before their current coaches. Those two coaches started out in a much better position than Brad. On the facility front, both of those schools have much better on campus practice and offices than SLU currently does.

Drew hasn't won anything at Baylor, yet. Let's see how both teams do this year. Baylor also has much better facilities than SLU. Baylor plays in the Big 12. Has a top-flight athletic department, look at what they accomplish outside of the big 2 sports. It is the largest Baptist University in the world. So it is not exactly a fair comparison.

Texas A&M and UTEP are both large state land grant universities. Have much larger and better athletic departments. They have better facilities and resources for the programs to work with. So they are not fair comparisons.

I am not saying that we can't be a big time program. I am not saying that everything is perfect with Brad. Everyone just needs to remember where he was starting. They need to remember the resources he has had to work with. I just think you need a little more time at SLU then you need at some of the other places that have been mentioned.

  15. Come on 72, you are not really trying to compare SLU program at any point to those at OSU, UL, GU, and MU. Not a fair comparison at all. See that is the problem with some of the negative posters here, they have no basis for the comparisons they try to make. They really are trying to compare apples and oranges.

Glad you brought up ZO, too. Cause it worked out great for him here. One NCAA fluke. And, the program loaded with blue chippers just like he has at UW. Wait, I can't remember any of those blue chippers. I guess the great new facality at UW, the Pac-10 conference, and being the talent rich Seattle area hasn't made a differnce.
