  1. I'm not sure why it's hosted at toastedrav.com, but here's the link to the current live stream of Christmas music:

    http://www.toastedrav.com/section/wmvn

Someone in St. Louis told me it was going to be around-the-clock Christmas music until January 1 (probably because they don't need to pay anyone, just put that stuff on cycle), and then it will switch over to sports. She heard this because she's out of her mind and has actually been listening to the Christmas music, and I guess it was a message on the station.

So if Bernie is correct, will our games just cut in on the Christmas music, or are we just not going to get the first half of the season?

More importantly to me, will out of towners be able to listen live online or will it be blacked out because of CSTV again?

  2. Could someone please copy and paste the text from the article onto this board. The computer I'm on wont open up the page. Thanks!

    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

    10/15/2008

The watchword for the St. Louis University basketball team this year is "new."

New as in brand, spanking new Chaifetz Arena, and new as in eight incoming freshmen among 12 players on the team. And while new is a good thing when it comes to facilities, it's not necessarily good when it comes to personnel.

"It will be challenging, no question about it," coach Rick Majerus said. "It will be very difficult. You don't want to be young, you don't want to have freshmen (having to contribute), but we are young and all we have are freshmen. But they seem to be a group of guys with passion for the game and appear to be committed to it."

Majerus, of course, is no longer new, having had a first season that was challenging for everyone as his players struggled to master his complex offense. SLU finished with a 16-15 record but lost four of its final five and failed to reach the postseason for the fourth straight year.

Only two Division I schools, Presbyterian and High Point, have more freshmen than SLU, but learning the offense should go a little more smoothly this season, since the team's two cornerstones, Tommie Liddell and Kevin Lisch, have had a year to master it and the freshmen were chosen by Majerus with his offense in mind. Last season, the only other person in the program who understood Majerus' offense was senior manager (and now assistant coach) Alex Jensen, who played for Majerus at Utah. There should be fewer confused looks this year.

The only other players returning are senior forward Barry Eberhardt, a junior college transfer who was up and down in his first season, and guard Paul Eckerle, who was essentially a walk-on last year who Majerus gave a scholarship to and ended up making significant contributions. But Eckerle has been bothered all summer with a back injury and Majerus doesn't expect him to be available for the start of practice on Friday. Though Eckerle figured to be getting less playing time this season behind the influx of freshmen, at least he had experience.

That means that at least two freshmen will be in the starting lineup when SLU opens its season, at Chaifetz on Nov. 14 against Missouri-St. Louis. Point guard Kwamain Mitchell seems likely to be one, and the other will be whoever emerges among the collection of big men: 6-10 Brent Thompson, 6-9 Willie Reed or 6-6 Brian Conklin. Though, as Majerus is fond of saying, "Starting is for high school. Everyone is going to play."

  3. not sure but i thought i had read that a team can trade individual workouts for a period of time for a team workout. they cant practice everyday, but it is something like once a week and then if they do that they cant have individual workouts with the players for that particular time period. i may be wrong, but i thought i had read that once.

we probably couldnt go on a pre-school tour because we cut half of our returning players and the freshmen likely wouldnt be eligible to go. i.e. our four players and a couple of managers take on team canada?

Individual workouts can include up to four players and one coach, usually an assistant. I am not sure what the calendar restrictions are on these but I don't think there is a calendar restriction on training/conditioning sessions with the strength and conditioning coach. Also, more than four players are allowed to get together on their own to scrimmage if no coach is present or was involved in the scheduling.

Players that have passed NCAA clearinghouse should be eligible to go on international exhibition tours, so I'm pretty sure most of our incoming freshman could have gone if the team did one this year (like they did several years ago in France and Spain). I agree that this wouldn't have been a good preseason for that, though.

  4. Fortunately, about 18 months ago I went all cash because I was too busy to figure out something to buy. My wife said I could have found higher rates wiith CD's; I told her I still thought I would find a buy eventually. Money in the sock drawer would have been wise for Joe six pack.

Merrill Lynch guy called and said what are you going to do after about 2 months; I said I can't find anything I trust if you have a recommendation call me.

Second piece of good luck he never called back.

Our house and office cleaner a single mom parent of 2 kids who grosses about $55K a year said she was worried her customers would fire her if they kept losing money.

Of course the current talking heads and some politicians say there is no trickle down effect. I told her it was probably not a good time to ask for a raise.

There's a trickle down effect when times are bad. That's when fat cats like to share. There's a burden to bear, and that's going to get spread around to as many people as they can manage to tag. I haven't seen much of a trickle down effect when times are good (the cleaning lady wasn't going to pull down $125K if a few of her customers had a great year). I didn't see hedge fund managers, investment bankers, or all the other big-swinging d***s sharing much when they were taking home 7-to-10 figures in a year. But when it all comes down, everyone- everyone- gets taken down.

Amendment: I don't want to get into politics on this board, really. So to lighten it up, I'll give a concession to the trickle-down set:

  5. You know '72, its when people like you post topics like this one, then the bullsh*t flies. I'm not talking about you in a personal sense, but you wonder why there's no SLU chatter, then go further on to list items like homes, 401(k)s and so on. Jimbo starts talking about his losses. Billikan starts espousing about the board's tone. Others start talking about their losses. Then an arse like me comes on and points all this out. And you wonder?!?!?!

It is October 10th. In the old days, even if you had Midnight Madness, it didn't kick off until October 15th. Reality check is also such that we--- the Saint Louis University Billikens --- are not a collegiate basketball powerhouse. Most in our own city may not know much about us and the media outlets in our city are in disagreement with our leadership about the value of a basketball rights package. We are not Duke. We are not UCLA. We are not Gonzaga.

Someone pointed out that practices are closed. Midnight Madness is not an option. And our HOF coach isn't concerned as much about an unimportant fan base as the vocal folks on this board really are. How Brett Thompson or Willie Reed or Femi John look in practice also don't matter. The bottom line is what's on the scoreboard at the end of 40 minutes. That won't be a reality until sometime in December. I suspect that come December, the discussions will be all where we want them. Until then, the number one sport in this country, is and will be, football.

Seriously '72, sit back and relax. We won't get anything of any real value until at least mid-December. I'm in no hurry -- it will come soon enough.

So basically we're not allowed to discuss anything other than final scores? Might as well just read Timmerman's write-up in the P-D. Why mid-December, when the non-conference schedule is halfway over? We have games before that and most of them count. Two more months is too long for me. We've been waiting too long, and it's just about time to see this team again.

You seem to be missing the fact that the whole point of a message board is so that we fans can get together and discuss all the finer points about our favorite team. These might vary in tone, quality, and quantity, but I think there is a lot more than scores to discuss in a meaningful way. And who cares if we're not Duke, UCLA, or Gonzaga? We didn't come to billikens.com by accident.

Feel free to reply, if by chance you sign on again before mid-December.

  6. No kidding. As long as things don't start costing more and my credit rates don't go up and I don't lose my job, doesn't really affect me that much, for right now. But some people are HURTING.

I've got you beat by a hair. I'm down 32.0% YTD. I just ushered in my 401(k) from my former employer to my new one, but it's down the same either way. Fortunately, it's not killing me because I'm 25 and don't have a ton in there. I do feel bad for my parents' generation, though.

As for board content and traffic, it's the quiet before the storm. We've let it build to a fever pitch before the season in prior years but with minimal quality information- this year, people are laying low a little bit and waiting for things to get going. That's my theory.

  7. Friend of mine e-mailed me this morning with info:

individual ticket game prices for this year are $28 and $32

according to the ticket office at SLU, the tickets can only be purchased from Metrotix.

That is all I have at this point.

    http://www.metrotix.com/

Go to select venue (option 3) and pick Chaifetz Arena. The second option is basketball, and you can "select a performance" from a drop-down menu on the right. The only prices listed are $28 and $32, and it says tickets go on sale Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 A.M.

Looks like times still are yet to be determined, as all dates have 11:59 as the game time.

  8. Does anyone know when season tickets are mailed out and/or scheduled to arrive?

What about Billiken Club membership cards- anyone know if and when we get those this season? I've gotten a couple thank you letters for my donation for BC membership, but that's it so far.

  9. Cowboy said:

    -as i said, not political....

-went to the GOP debate watch party and here are my observations on the arena so many days after the globetrotters....

-i would guess it was 70% full, but tough to gauge with all the people on the floor, so may have been more than that

    -no beer served

-concession stands were open, took a LONG time for the lines to move (will be tough to get 2 beers runs accomplished at halftime at this rate)

-heard several people question the limited food offerings (i almost asked if they thought they were at applebees, but restrained)

-heard MANY people say things like - wow, this is really nice re. the bldg

-heard several people rave about the video boards

-there was some great scenery on hand

    -no beer served

-sound problems, again, multiple times, i don't know if this was a function of the sound system or who was running it, but this will have to be fixed come Nov

-on the floor after the gov's speech it was hot, i guess with all the lights and the people, but it was hot (and so is she, btw)

-getting into the compton garage was not a problem, i came from grand to lindell to compton

-getting out of the compton garage was tough - 50 minutes from the second from the top level - but they did have compton closed for most of that time

-can i ask for some feedback?? - is this reasonable- if you are going to park in the garage for bball games, and are going to back in to your spot - you should only attempt this if the task can be accomplished on average over the course of the season in 1.5 tries, but i would hope we can all agree SIX tries is way too many - and if that was you mr 6 timer, yes it was my group in the car behind you with our hands out the window clapping on your success-after 6 tries

-hopefully the exiting of the garage can be accomplished quickly when all the roads are open

-in the garage there were all kinds of people directing traffic

-my hopes for a garage across the street someday seem dashed as harris stowe is buliding a new education bldg, but there is still their baseball field....

    A few questions/comments:

-If you went to the speech, you had to be there early for the debate, right?

-Was it sold out, or did it at least look full?

    -Was it general admission seating?

-I'm sure the closure of Compton had a lot to do with the time it took to leave the garage- shouldn't be that bad on game nights. Majerus and Palin probably don't have the same level of security detail.

  10. miller has obviously proven he is a strong recruiter. and in this day of college basketball, if you can only have one outstanding quality, recruiting is probably the one to have.

as to his x's and o's, i cant see how he can get the overall #1 coaching rank. rickma outcoached him last year and if not for polk not putting a body on that kid crashing the boards, we win that game.

imo, i'd put miller fourth and move everyone else up one. martelli is the best coach in the conference.

You guys are harsh. Xavier was 14-2 in conference. The second place team was 11-5. The players were Miller's recruits, either as head coach or top assistant. They won 30 games and went to the Elite Eight. I can't think of any better measure of a coach than wins, and Miller's got the rest of the conference beat in that column by a decent margin. How can you scrutinize X's and O's? Do you know enough about his game plans to say he's not as good as at least three other coaches in the conference? Whatever he's doing is obviously working, and I have to think he's the top coach in the A10 until someone proves otherwise.

  11. I was told by a pretty reliable source that Willie Reed was the last player with eligibility issues (NCAA clearinghouse-the Christian Academy attendance). He was reported to have cleared late last week. This "if eligible" issue on Cotto does not exist.

Funny, if you talk to a Xavier fan when X isn't exactly "right" as I have on occasions (the last being when the Bills were the four seed in Cincy and Xavier had a loaded group with Doehlman for one) --- Miller is an idiot. Some even said last year that they wanted him to go to Indiana. Some sadi no. This was said on the boards (as in Boardwalk). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I dont' believe that if this is based on Xs adn Os, that Miller stacks up with the three behind him. Sure, he's won a lot but is that because of him or the pipeline he stepped into? I mean X has been pretty strong, going back to Midwesstern City days. Their coaching alums were even more impressive than their NBA alums what with Gillen, Prosser, Matta, and so on. I'd say that WH has Miller there based on record, not so much as coaching ability which I would give to the other three right now based on longevity.

    Subjectivity has its limits.

I would be shocked if Reed is held up much longer. I think it's been a tough combination of going to that two-bit "Christian Academy" and the fact that the NCAA clearinghouse has been months behind schedule. His case is one where he got screwed once pretty bad and doesn't deserve it again. All our guys should be fine for this year.

Interesting take on Miller. My girlfriend and her family are huge XU fans and have been season ticket holders for decades (both parents are alums) and they took a little while to warm up to Miller, but at this point I don't know anyone who isn't sold on him. Miller doesn't have the warm personality that instantly endears people to coaches, which is pretty much the only knock on him I can think of. He's put together four solid seasons in his first four years of increasing success, going deeper into the tournament each year since missing it his first year. He's proven himself to be a great recruiter, has over a .700 winning percentage, and has stayed with the program when his phone probably rings quite a bit after each year. It's tough to compete with a couple of XU's past coaches in terms of likeability- Gillen was seen as a hard worker and down-to-earth and the architect of the program, while Prosser was a class act, great guy, outstanding recruiter, and won quite a few games at Xavier.

Miller does benefit, though, from the fact that most Xavier fans tend to see Matta as a two-faced opportunist. He hasn't stayed anywhere more than 3 years in his career, and now is at big, bad OSU (a plum coaching job if there ever was one, I might add). I know the nature of the game is climbing the ladder and program-hopping, but he's lost all respect from Xavier fans.

I'd be curious to hear xfactor's take on Miller.

  12. I love how you keep trying to lobby others to join your sinking ship. I can disagree with just about anyone on here and still have a civil exchange. You simply don't allow that with anyone who happens to disagree with you. You just cyberstalk like a troll.

Here are some of the comments made by pistol:

"I would never singlehandedly blame officiating for our losses or bad seasons or state of the program, but it is yet another area that we have had to deal with and other programs haven't experienced it nearly as bad."

So here pistol is saying that SLU is somehow treated worse than other programs.

"we've definitely had a lot of games altered unnecessarily by the stripes- and even though everyone has, my argument is we've had it worse."

Again, SLU has it worse than other programs.

"A lot of those losses had to do with coaching decisions or lack of execution down the stretch, but a few more calls our way could have made that season a lot different...Officiating matters. It won't make or break the program, but having officiating stacked against us on the road and then coming home to inconsistent and poor officiating does have an effect."

So here pistol is saying that officiating cost SLU wins that season. I would argue that having thin talent and your two top players out is what cost SLU that season.

Now please explain to me how this isn't an example of one of our fans saying the refs have cost us wins.

Hey, pistol and I can disagree on this and have a civil exchange. Unfortunately, you never let anyone disagree with you without turning into a cyberstalking troll.

BTW, what kind of "reaction" was I trying to get from roy? Even skip chimed in and said that you were full of sh!t. Are you too afraid to asnwer the question? That's why you intially came into this thread. Then, once you were easily dismissed, you changed your attack to other tired arguments that were also swatted away...begging others to join your failed cause all along the way. What a flameout!

I think I was pretty clear in qualifying all of my statements. I've seen hundreds of SLU games over the years and so many more basketball games in general, and I honestly believe that for whatever reason, we've gotten stuck with lousy officials at home and fallen victim of other teams' home cooking on the road.

Also, I was not blaming the outcome of the 2004-2005 season on the refs; read it again and you'll see that my argument was that SLU was 1-10 in games decided in OT or by 6 points or less, and that those games are often swung by a call down the stretch. I'd have to go back and actually watch tape to see if I'd pin any of those losses on blown calls, but the whole point is that if we didn't see terrible home cooking for other teams when we're on the road (as many teams do) or if we had even the slightest degree of home cooking at Kiel/Savvis/Scottrade, who knows? We may have won a few more of those games and put together a .500 season or close to it even without the services of our battered senior class.

  13. Pappys is the best bbq in st. louis hands down. I was dissapointed with Buffalo Brewing also, just wasnt very good and the place isnt very big at all. Isnt that area considered Midtown?

I think it would be considered Midtown. I thought I remember the public funds issue for Midtown revitalization (with the somewhat controversial case involving the new arena) saying the borders were Chouteau, Vandeventer, Jefferson, and Delmar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The "dead area" I'm referring to, though, is a sub-section of Midtown, particularly the Olive-Compton area, and now all these places are popping up there.

  14. That would be A Good Pie, about to open across the street from The U/Buffalo Brewing. Supposedly a high-temp imported Neapolitan oven.

Also newly opened: Exo, right near the corner of Compton and Locust, with a menu by Eric Brenner of Moxy.

On another board, someone has suggested calling the Locust Business District the SLoop.

I like it- but I'd push for the spelling SLUp and we can correct out-of-towners on pronunciation as needed.

I sure miss Vito's and I'm ecstatic to see some growth in that formerly dead area. I recommended Pappy's to some Cincinnatians who were in St. Louis this past weekend. They went there for dinner last Friday night and got ribs, and now they swear that St. Louis style barbecue is the best they've ever had. However, they were disappointed with the beer from Buffalo Brewing, which wasn't my recommendation because I haven't been there.

  15. THIS TEAM HAS THE TALENT TO WIN THE WEAK ATLANTIC TEN

And if it doesnt sure feel for Kevin and Tommy

No excuses this year......LET THE PLAYERS PLAY

One word: Xavier. Regardless of who else is up or down in the A10 this year, there are 16 games in the conference season and this team will have the most wins when it's all said and done. They lost 3 very unique players with large roles, but they have depth at every position with a very talented freshman class. They play a monster non-conference schedule and will be strong and battle-tested by the time they get into what you're calling a "weak" A10. They have Derrick Brown, who nbadraft.net currently projects to be in the first half of the first round of next year's draft. I have the advantage of being in Cincinnati and seeing this team play a lot more than most people on this board, and I have absolutely no reason to think they won't win the conference again this year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Kevin and Tommie and I'm thrilled about our freshman class. We have just four guys returning, though- only four guys know how Majerus operates. That's a lot of youth and a lot of learning. I don't care what conference we're in, this will be a year with a lot of growing pains and I'm not expecting better than .500 in conference.

  16. I don't recall anyone claiming bad officiating was the cause of all the woe's in SLU's basketball program. We ***** about it (at least I do) it's bad. We ***** about other things also, lack of funds, poor recruiting, etc... How do we differentiate between what's ok to ***** about and what's not? Many things have caused SLU's relative lack of success on the basketball court, poor officiating hasn't helped. Has it cost us a certain amount of games every year ... I don't know, but I'm sure it has cost us some. When we go on the road we often face home cooking, and I doubt that will ever change, it's that way in almost every conference. (the Big 12 is horrible) We don't get the same cooking when we are at home. I don't even want fair officiating at home, I want the same at home as we give up on the road. Maybe an on campus arena that's full with a rowdy crowd will help.

Please don't complain about something ... whether your complaint is valid or not, the fact that you're complaining will make you a cry baby .... or give us a list of things we can ***** about and what's not acceptable. This is a message board, we're fans we're going to ***** ... it's the nature of the beast.

Yeah, Footes, Skip pretty much sums up my thoughts on the issue. Great post, Skip.

I would never singlehandedly blame officiating for our losses or bad seasons or state of the program, but it is yet another area that we have had to deal with and other programs haven't experienced it nearly as bad. I can't think of a specific game off the top of my head where SLU lost and I thought, "wow, one bad call and we directly lost as a result." But that's not to say it hasn't happened or couldn't happen. Bad calls that don't directly affect the outcome can change momentum, foul players out early, and so on, and we've definitely had a lot of games altered unnecessarily by the stripes- and even though everyone has, my argument is we've had it worse.

I also think of it this way: in the 2004-2005 season, we went 9-21 (of course my senior year had to be gut-wrenching). All three seniors were hurt some, if not most, of the year. We got bad breaks every step of the way. There were a few blowouts, but a lot of people see that awful record and don't remember that we lost a lot of close games that year. In close games (decided by 6 points or less or in OT), we had a record of 1-10. If we won half of those games, we'd have been 14-16- not completely terrible, all things considered. A lot of those losses had to do with coaching decisions or lack of execution down the stretch, but a few more calls our way could have made that season a lot different.

Officiating matters. It won't make or break the program, but having officiating stacked against us on the road and then coming home to inconsistent and poor officiating does have an effect.

  17. I certainly don't want to get in the middle of a personal fight, but I do have a few comments about the refs. For anyone dismissive of remarks about bad officiating SLU has historically had, you A) haven't seen many games in person or B) haven't been to or watched many road games. I know the original comment was semi-joking, but there's a lot of truth to it.

We've never had any of that good ol' home cooking on the Kiel/Savvis/Scottrade floor. I was at almost every home game from the mid-1990s until I attended SLU in 2001 through 2005, when I attended every single home game for 4 years, and quite a few on the road. I can say objectively (despite my die-hard SLU fanhood) that we have had absolutely no favors from the officials. I believe that officiating should be as straightforward, objective, and fair as possible on any court (duh), and unfortunately that's not the way it works in a lot of places.

Have you ever gone to any of the Valley gyms? We get absolutely hosed there. It's as if the conference and officials are sending us a message. How about the gyms of any BCS-conference school? You can be sure they accept nothing less than referees who are very conscious of their surroundings.

Our home court for so long has almost felt like a neutral site because it's not on campus, it's huge and hard to fill to capacity, and also because of the head-scratching officiating. I'm an idealist and what I'd like to see is completely fair officiating on every court but as long as there are powerful, profitable programs or provincial programs with provincial fan bases, that's not going to happen. Since we've been in the A10, we also see a lower caliber of official, which is unfortunate (but to any Valley sympathizers, I guarantee we wouldn't get better officiating there).

I don't believe SLU fans are whiny when it comes to the refs; our criticism of officials is justified because SLU fans are smart and know what it's like for other programs. We've had a few good ones consistently over the years, like Steve Welmer, but those guys are gone. I can only hope we finally get the quality of officiating we deserve now that we truly have a home floor.

  18. How about a Rays-Brewers series? Those are the only two in the race without a title yet. That would also be a fun matchup to watch.

That would be a TV executive nightmare. Ratings would fall like the stock market going to do today.

They need a Red Sox-Cubs series.

Quite frankly, I am not sympathetic of television network executives. They put out a product that is over 90% terrible, and take home obscene amounts of money in the process. I want a series that will be fun to watch, and two up-and-coming franchises that will be playing their guts out would be more fun to me than two bloated franchises with insufferable fan bases. The Cubs and Red Sox also happen to be my two least favorite teams for those (among many other) reasons and because I'm a Cardinals fan.

  19. This is the second time a shot has been taken at Palin. This shouldn't be a political board, when we tried that it was a mess. IF it continues here it'll get ugly again.

I agree, I don't want political threads, either. But, Palin is appearing in our shiny new arena this week, so that twist does make her somewhat relevant here...if only for the event.

Schasz, just be careful not to post a link satirizing her or the thread will be locked.

But back to baseball- these are going to be some crazy playoffs. I'm thrilled the Brewers got the wild card over the Mets, and I'm pulling for the Twins over the White Sox. My one hope for these playoffs is that the Cubs get beaten, and I don't care who does it. If they win, get ready for the most obnoxious celebration in sports history.

How about a Rays-Brewers series? Those are the only two in the race without a title yet. That would also be a fun matchup to watch.

  20. Chris Sloan improved greatly over his career at SLU and was a decent to pretty good athlete. That said Chris was never a great athlete. The fact that some SLU fans think he was tells you all you need to know about about the athletic talent that has come through here recently and how this town falls in love with the likes of Bo Hart..

My thread was a response to the fact that almost no one before my post acknowledged his athleticism. I gave a lot of reasons why he should be considered a much better athlete than he gets credit for, and the other side of the argument seems to be "he's not a great athlete" or "the guys he matched up with were better athletes." Fine, if that's the premise then tell me why. Give me the other C-USA guys who he guarded that were so much better athletically than him.

Just a quick run-through from his senior year, I'll give you James White (or Jason Maxiell, depending on his assigment), James Carney, and Francisco Garcia as the guys who he matched up against with a definite edge athletically. The next tier is probably Quemont Greer and Curtis Withers, both of whom would be close calls. And the next tier Sloan was just better than.
