  1. I have a feeling Nivins is going to start trying to take this game over---We need to double, maybe triple him to make sure doesn't get started. If he does, we're screwed

Definitely - and they are not shooting from deep and apparently have a couple weak links out there shooting-wise. Let's shut down the big guy before he makes another case for A10 player of the year.

  2. once again--terrible transition defense...Same thing when we played Temple--no one is getting back quick enough

We also kind of went cold for a while there, glad to see Mitchell end it. 42-40 St. Joe's.

Also saw the other A10 final scores tonight flash by:

    Temple 72, Fordham 45

    Rhode Island 71, UMass 59

    Richmond 62, LaSalle 53

Not much changes in the standings with those; LaSalle and Richmond are now both 5-6, Temple is 8-3, and URI is 8-4.

And the SLU women beat Rhode Island 63-43.

  3. Thank God Nivins graduates this year. He's a man among boys. The key to this game is for the Bills to stop him.

Two questions about him: does he have a chance to beat Christmas for A10 POY? Is he an NBA player?

I'd take a chance on him in the second round. Love his size, nose for the hoop, ability to step out and shoot- it's been a while since I've seen him play before tonight but I like what I see a lot. He's bigger than I remember.

I'd still go with Christmas at this point. Temple is a bubble team and is nothing without him. Nivins' numbers might look better across the board but Christmas might be the more valuable player. It will be interesting to see how they finish.

  4. Lots of empty seats behindthe St. Joe's bench.

    Also - that f**king Hawk is there...stupid

I can't believe they travel that thing.

12-6 SLU and Martelli calls a timeout at 12:43. Reed is working hard on Nivins defensively- keep fronting him, Willie. His long arms saved him from allowing an easy 2 after letting him catch the ball deep.

  5. Maybe this is difficult to understand, but what do we gain from it? Sure, a sellout in all likelihood. But it wouldn't be a quality win, it could be a damning loss, and we can get sellouts with other games around that time.

It's certainly not my fault that SLU couldn't take advantage of Mizzou being the worst team in the midwest over the last 5 years.

Yes, a sellout, along with the money, press coverage, and regional interest that comes along with that type of game. If this game is played every year it's very, very valuable for both programs in the long run. The whole "what do we gain?" thing is such a lousy argument and once again ignores the load of terrible non-conference games every program plays each season.

Neither Mizzou nor SLU was even close to the worst team in the Midwest in recent history, but nice job trying to bait me there. I am not blaming you for the game not happening; I blame Mizzou's athletic department and coaching staff. I know for a fact Soderberg tried to get this one going every year he was here and Majerus has publicly stated his desire for this annual matchup.

  6. I believe your stereotype would have me in jail a few times by now, which I can assure you hasn't happened.

I've been thinking about it, and you're right, MU would LOVE to play second fiddle with those teams so we could play a meaningless game against a CBI bubble team!

Meaningless? Are you honestly trying to say that a game that drew 26,000 people to the dome, sold out the Hearnes Center, and sold out Scottrade Center in consecutive seasons would be meaningless? Would you rather have the following oh-so-meaningful non-conference games: Prairie View A&M, Chattanooga, Oral Roberts, UAPB, Murray State, Stetson, SIUE, Centenary, or Coppin State? There's a lot of garbage on both of our schedules this season, and only a complete moron wouldn't gladly play the game for either side.

And I shouldn't have to explain this, but no regular-season game could ever be called "meaningless" since they all count toward the overall record.

  7. http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/billiken-...g-on-wednesday/

Joe Sullivan, long-time college basketball reporter and St. Joe's alum, contributed this blog post to Timmerman's blog yesterday. It's a good read, and he seems to know his stuff. It also helps that he picked SLU to win (albeit a close, ugly one).

Also, the game is listed on channelsurfing.net for us out-of-towners. Hopefully it's working tonight, as radio and video feeds have been awful lately.

I'm hoping for a nice student turnout tonight (if the initial post of this thread is right) and a great win, and that translating into SLU fans buying up the few leftover seats for the Dayton game on Saturday when I'm there. The most obnoxious fan I've ever encountered at a SLU game was a Dayton fan back at the Scottrade Center a few years ago; I swear if I come across him or anyone like him on Saturday, There Will Be Blood. It will help that I'll have plenty of booze flowing through my veins from Mardi Gras.

  8. Come on skip, didn't you see the rules - no soccer discussion until April or May.

Breaking the rules...Here's an attacking player coming in - Roach. I 'assume' he'll be an immediate starter. Interested to see if any other top level transfers are coming in or whether anyone has any personal impressions on the freshman.

For all commitments, espn has a comprehensive list.

So what's the story with Roach? Did he even play this past season? I looked at Indiana's website and he apparently played a little as a freshman but I didn't see his name anywhere on this year's stats. I know he sat out his senior year at Chaminade after surviving a terrible car accident and suffering some injuries, but has he regained form? I've also read that he had some personal issues at IU, that he might be a head case- is this true at all or greatly exaggerated?

  9. i would add the siu, kent state and nebraska losses. while nebraska is having a decent season and siu has been up and down, imo those were games we shoulda coulda won if the good billiken team shows up. kent state at the time i felt would be a player in their conference and the loss then didnt hurt beyond the fact that it was a one man going crazy show that you dont see often. looking back now, another mediocre team we probably should have won.

so now adding those 3 wins also, we would be 20 - 4 right now, and likely in the ncaa picture.

That's a huge swing, adding 5 wins to the record. You have to figure that some of our wins were close ones and other teams are looking at them saying, "We shoulda coulda beat SLU." BC is probably tops on that list.

Carbondale is a very tough place to play even when they're down. Nebraska is having a nice year against a solid schedule. Kent State is down from where they normally are and I would say that was the most realistic one of the three to win, since it was at home and went to OT.

Detroit is our only completely inexcusable loss. That team is just bad. DePaul is at least in the Big East, Temple and Dayton are both solid and were on the road, and Richmond is a twice-a-season conference opponent- though I would put that as our second or third-highest "shoulda coulda won" loss.

  10. Just saw it on NBA TV. In my opinion both Jordan and Stockton are the best ever at their respective positions and its great to see this phenomenal backcourt go in together.

David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, and Cynthia Cooper are the others on the ballot for the first time. The other players are Bernard King, Dennis Johnson, and Chris Mullin. Don Nelson and Al Attles are nominated, and then they have a women's ballot (Cooper and Vivian Stringer) an international ballot with coach Vladimir Kondrashin and Pereira Maciel "Ubiratan," and a veterans' ballot with Johnny (Red) Kerr and Richard Guerin.

I guess they each need 18 of 24 votes to get in, but I'm not sure if the number elected is capped. Jordan, Stockton, and Robinson are no-brainers to me, and the rest are arguable.

  11. I think a win over Rhode Island will get SLU at least a NIT bubble spot on that projection.

Food for thought: if Kwamain Mitchell was healthy for the home game against Richmond and we won and his last second shot fell against Dayton SLU would be 8-2 in the A-10 and tied with Xavier for 1st in the League.

From an overall picture standpoint, the losses against Detroit and DePaul are killing us. DePaul may be in the Big East but they haven't won a conference game and have a Pomeroy rating of above 200. Detroit is just awful, in last place in the Horizon. Turn those two bad losses into wins and we're in the NIT picture at 17-7.

  12. I hope Lutz is not fired. He's produced some very good teams in his tenure and it appears he's had a rough year due primarily to injuries. Hopefully with Sherrill and a healthy roster, he'll be able to right the ship next season. Good luck to you guys.

Don't forget Lutz had a verbal commitment from Michael Beasley a couple years ago, when his AAU coach, Dalonte Hill, was an assitant there. Of course, Huggins and K-State came in and hired Hill away to lure Beasley there instead and the rest is history. Sure, Charlotte only would have had him one year but that's enough to have made a big difference at the program. Lutz and his staff are still good recruiters and they'll be back; this year is more an anomaly than the rule.

  13. plus even if dayton and xaiver and slu publically say they arent interested in going elsewhere, the a-10 would be naive to take that at face value.

look at the facts. all three are in the upper half undoubtedly on almost any view of their program. they are the top three attendance teams year after year. however, they are also the three that are the most geographically challenged. it is a disadvantage performancewise no matter what anyone says since they are in the league minority geographically. they would have to have the worst travel conditions and costs, and that carries over to the fandoms for the conference tourney in atlantic city which hurts the teams there as they dont get the crowds of backers they would have gotten if the fan travel costs and time didnt suck so much.

if i was the a-10 you can bet i would be thinking, how can i even this up for my three midwest favorite programs? why maybe if i boot 2-4 not even triers out of the league to increase our national prominence and performance overall and decrease their (the three midwest teams) travel costs and time, the three midwest teams (and the league) would all be much better off.

    Nice follow up, Roy.

I'm not sure that The Big Three (as I like to think of the A10's western teams) automatically have the highest travel expenses, though. St. Bonaventure has to take a long bus trip (except Pittsburgh, about 3+ hours away) or bus 2 hours to Buffalo or Rochester before flying. That has to add up. Charlotte is too far to bus anywhere, but they have a relatively cheap airport to fly to and from.

Cincinnati and Richmond are generally two of the most expensive airports in the country, but Xavier charters (and Delta just lowered non-stop prices from CVG this week, which is huge for me).

SLU, Xavier, and Dayton have airports in town, and I think all three take charter flights everywhere. I imagine that is expensive, but I'm not sure how all the money works with that situation. All that said, I'm sure they're near the top if not 1-2-3 in travel budgets.

  14. i think most of the mvc supporters have disappeared since this will be the second year in a row that the mvc is behind the a-10 in conference rankings. this year they have no chance to get more than one team (currently creighton is the highest rpi team at 60).

the truth is they had their little run when elgin was smart enough to realize that the rpi was driving the at large picks of the ncaa tourney, he broke the code on how to schedule to the rpi betterment of all and then they performed well enough to capitalize.

the other conferences have caught up in scheduling knowledge (well except slu which has went backwards on scheduling) and now the rankings are probably more represenative of the true conference strengths again.

the best thing the a-10 can do is to get rid of two bottom feeders as a 14 team league is tough to hold up for the whole league. proof is look at the mountain west which is ranked right above us. only ten teams. now if we took just our top 10 teams, we would undoubtedly leap the mountain west and probably be knocking on the bcs door for rpi.

the solution is to put some minimum standards for facilities, budget, scheduling etc. give the members 2-3 years to reach them and then if a couple to four of the programs arent doing such, they leave. sounds cold, but if they arent even going to try, why hold the rest of the league back?

This is an excellent post. Agree on all points, and your suggestion at the end is fair and makes perfect sense. The league's only shot to bump a team out was with the welding license/early season quitting at Bonaventure a few seasons back. I'm not sure why they let that go. But I will say SBU is getting better and performing better than a number of other A10 teams this year. I think your ultimatum idea would screw Fordham more than any other program in the league.
