  1. first, I apologize to the other readers of this board for this question

second, we all know recruiting sites can be manipulated/bought/not worth a damn/wrong

Vtime, what does the 'rank' column indicate on rivals.com site?

and what does 'nr' mean for the 3 players listed?

what does the 'stars' column mean and why is blank for these 3 players?

    do you get it?

  2. to remember that today is OCTOBER 27.

At least no one took the bait and responded to the question about VN being a bust.

Look at the history of JC's we have had, takes a year to get comfortable and then improvement the next season.

For me at least, there will be little bits of evidence as to what this season will become starting Nov 9 and the bits become chuncks on Nov 22 (in St Charles, back a cooler for the wait to get out of the parking lot, even if only 2000 there).

How do we know how the frosh will react when the lights come on? We can speculate and hope and I guess that is fun, but let's see.

At the risk of sounding like Quin (I mean Coach Snyder), how will the team gel? what are the combinations?

I want to see the lights on before judging.

Lot of water to go over the damn yet.

  3. Broy, in talking about this statistic on gain/loss point measurement, if indeed that is what the coaching staff is doing, how is this an intangible? If the lead goes up or the deficit is cut that seems very tangible. Maybe it is a measure of intangibles a player brings. Of course this is all speculation, but again I say this sort of statistic makes sense to me as PART of overall player evaluation.

  4. When UB introduced AD at Billiken Madness and called him the first player/coach in SLU history, imo that is a huge statement as to UB's committment to AD.

I do indeed like this concept of gain/loss in scoring differential per player, but the level of analysis may need to be combinations on the floor. But if someone is playing and scoring 20 points and the player they are defending is scoring 30 points in the same time, how is this not a negative?

  5. I couldn't help but wonder what crawled up Q's (I'm sorry, Coach Snyder) backside to get him going like that at MEDIA DAY for gosh sakes?

does he think the media is not supporting him or is against him??

And yes, he built the building, the columns, Jesse Hall and Harpos.

I think the #1 question here is...who will be the coach next year? will be it the hot-coach-of-the-day that takes an 11 seed to the sweet 16?

  6. I am a SLU alum, so that is my connection.

One of the dudes that has season tix with me got his initial exposure to SLU in the same two ways I did....SLU used to host a 7 or 8th grade tourney in West Pine that ran the length of the season as I remember (I guess access time was the key, I think we played a game every 2 or 3 weeks not over a weekend) and we played in the Checkerdome before the SLU game (David Burns era)

If we have our own bldg, perhaps we can do some of this again.

But doing these things would probably require a practice gym, yet another reason to build that, imo

If I win Powerball, the arena will get built with coaches offices and a practice facility.

any way to drive attendance, drive interest and turn people into ticket buyers, so why not have a CYC night/day or whatever and sell the kids a ticket for $1, or $20 bucks a team for every game, unless that impacts how we pay rent to Lauire/Checketts

  7. JJR, I posted the way out there scenario and named it such b/c imo we don't have a known quantity at 4 and was looking at a way to possibly create a matchup problem for our opponent as opposed to our past and perhaps current way of thinking that we are always on the other end of the match up problem trying to defend it and also a jab at UB as we had a season last yr to find out some things that I don't think we know now and chief among them are what do we have in BH and JJ, or at least some indicators as to what we have or don't.

UB said on his radio show during last season something very close to 'one of the very tough things about playing Charlotte is that coach Lutz throws different things at you making it very hard to prepare for and play his team' and this was in reference to different defenses and player combinations on the floor.

What do we do to make it harder for an opponent to play us?

I am saying try this, if it works great, if not don't do it again.

But trying is more than 45 seconds of observation time.

  8. "Sure wish someone would do a definitive piece on JJ. 6'8", seemingly athletic, brief glimpses of what could be...what goes on in his head when he knows this team is crying for someone to step up and be the man at the 4. Is it a total lack of competitiveness, apathy, or something about him and UB just not jelling? Have to think if it was the latter, he'd a taken the transfer route along with DC. "

Isn't this the definitive piece on JJ??

All we have is hope that the glimpses we have seen become the way he consistently plays and practices.

  9. One comment I want to make on the schedule at this point is to me it is a long way to go to play one game in Hawaii.

Not sure I noticed this until I printed the schedule last week.

I guess they couldn't find anyone to play on the left coast coming or going.

The Bills record last year, imo, was greatly influenced by the inability to score which, also imo, was mostly caused by horrible shooting. If we shoot above 45% this year, we win more than 16 games.

But I just looked at last yr's stats and we outshot our opponents on a % basis. That amazes me.

  10. Those teams/sports, Mizzou football, Blues hockey and esp Rams football all provide more relevance, in at least my mind, to the people the PD is trying to sell a newspaper to or get to buy advertising.

Hate 'em or like 'em, Mizzou is the state university and I tried to find the data but couldn't, but I would bet the school with the most alumni in STL and I would also bet by a long way.

The Blues are in one of the four major professional leagues and have made the playoffs for 26 consecutive seasons.

The Rams have the highest tv ratings of any program in STL, that speaks to relevance to a wide, very wide population.

Next question, would people not buy the paper or not advertise if coverage of these were taken away? My answer is I would bet on it, but we can't prove it b/c that is not going to happen.

  11. Ok, I'll agree with there was interest however many years ago when we were winning, if we equate interest to attendance.

Heck, there was even an article in SI and there were articles in the PD on other than game day.

I'll add that StL, like probably most other areas, supports a winner, and until we win, winning drives attendance for SLU, we will not get space in the PD. As much as I would love to have it the other way, I am not sure the PD is wrong, and that sucks from my SLU perspective.

  12. Bonwich, maybe my thought on the newspaper business is totally wrong about there having to be relevance to someone to either advertise or purchase the paper. Can you help me here?

I still cannot make the leap that b/c SLU is in the top 50 in attendance in the nation there should be regular, in depth coverage b/c I am not sure the people that aren't at the game care or give a hoot about SLU.

I do have an understanding (limited though it maybe) that advertising is clearly a part of the paper business model, I have always referenced this when giving my view. I also see the number of advertisers in the sports section. Would any of them stop advertising if SLU was not covered at all (not much difference to the current situation)? Would any stop if SLU coverage was expanded? Not sure we are in the position to know for sure, but I don't think SLU plays into any advertising thoughts given the lack of coverage we get right now (and didn't the PD not send the beat reporter to an away game last year?)

wouldn't the PD give expanded coverage if SLU did help them sell advertising and newspapers?
