Heard today that JJ has been reinstated. Anybody know whether he will dress for tomorrow's game?

I guess if Brad could only evaluate talent a little better he would have recruited this guy!

I have not seen very many freshman or sophomore big men who dominate basketball games. They are few and far between.
The thing I did like on Saturday was the fact that we had balanced scoring - something we have not had since the best years of Spoonball. We also kept control of the ball against an aggressive, overplaying defense.
There were some defensive lapses which I am sure the coaching staff will work on.
The discussion on this thread is an indication that we all have high expectations for this team.

I took my daughter to practice two weekends ago. Spoke to Brad and to almost every player. Everyone was very cordial, very friendly, and we were very impressed with the players and the coaching staff.
No one asked me to write my name down on a clipboard. I was not trying to take any notes, however.
I would wonder how many other D-1 programs would have allowed us to watch practice and to meet and talk to the players and coaches before practice?

Polk more than held his own against more experienced competition in the practice I saw. He is going to be a key player for us.
It was nice to see you at practice on Saturday.

Had the chance to observe practice last Saturday. Very intense, competitive. We have more strength, size, and athleticism top to bottom than I can ever remember. Practicing against better competition every day will make every player better.
TL was there observing practice as part of his official campus visit. He will look great in blue and white.

Tommie was at SLU last weekend making his official campus visit. He will look good in a Billiken uniform.

If Brad is truly recruiting this young man, then is this a sign that we are unlikely to land a true 4 player in the near future? I have not seen Kellerman play, but he does not sound like a particularly high level recruit from the descriptions on this board. Creating your own shot is important, as is playing physical defense. I am not sure that these qualities can be created by the coaching staff in this case.

I think that the presence of a football team might also benefit basketball recruiting. I wonder how many potential basketball recruits might be persuaded to commit to a given school if they have friends/classmates who are being recruited to play football at the same university?

I would like to think that jjray is correct in his theory as to why Cusworth has opted-out of SLU. I guess Brad had nothing to lose by having Cusworth in for a visit. Do we know if Brad offered Cusworth a scholarship?

My hope is that the new Athletic Director will be able to be creative with the academic requirements for SLU. It would certainly make us more competitive in terms of recruiting and retention of athletes.
-
I asked Doug Woolard a couple of years ago why SLU does not have a phys-ed major. He sidestepped the question. We are proud of the fact that SLU wins the academic honors for C-USA. I guess we should continue to demand at least some academic prowess from our athletes.

How about Tulsa? I remember seeing them in an NCAA regional here not too long ago.

It was only after I bought myself a Trek road bike and began riding it around St. Louis county that I began to realize how athletic the pro cyclists are.
Lance has been the most tested athlete on earth for the past few years. He trains harder than anyone else, has more athletic
endurance and faster recovery than anyone else.
None of the cyclists recently nailed for drug usage have come close to beating Lance in the overall Tour de France competition. It doesn't hurt that he has assembled the best team in the world around him.

This is off the top of my head but I will say it anyway - could TL have intentionally tanked his re-attempts at the ACT in order to escape his commitment to SLU and make himself (and his "agent") available on the open market? There are not alot of other ways to escape a LOI, to the best of my knowledge.

Claiborne and Ramsey had a very long and very pleasant interview on KFNS with Cheryl Levick this afternoon - over 40 minutes of airtime.

Detroit is showing that blue collar defense and disciplined offense can be effective at any level. We have seen SLU have success with the same combination. I wonder if Brad is a Pistons fan in this series.

Newspapers love to publicize the amount of money that the self-appointed "victim" feels entitled to. Rarely do we see headlines about pesonal injury lawsuits which fail. We are guaranteed to read about ridiculous jury awards, and the triumphant plaintiff's attorney sending "messages" to evil corporations, cities, institutions, etc. It is not going to end anytime soon.

During SLU's best years under Spoon, we had great guard play with scoring from the wings. We had very little inside scoring presence and if memory serves me correctly we were usually outplayed inside. Donnie Dobbs and Jeff Harris were warriors but were undersized. Evan Pederson and David Robinson were never in danger of being selected to the all-conference teams.
Our current crop of bigs is adequate, in my opinion. Would I love to see us sign another Anthony Bonner? Of course. Give Husak and Vouyoukas time to develop.

Ramsey and Claiborne had a nice interview today with Brad at the SLU golf tournament at Norwood Hills C.C. They were both very complimentary and seemed excited for the future of the program.
Ramsey was talking about Kevin Lisch during much of his afternoon program today on KFNS. Frank Cusumano interviewed Rusty Lisch this morning on KFNS - the whole Lisch family seemed very happy with his commitment to SLU.

Can Tommie Liddell practice with the guys, and has anyone seen him play at West Pine gym yet?
Did you have the impression that Luke Meyer was overmatched or just having a less than ideal day?
-
I would just like to echo the feelings of the other posters on this board - we all really enjoyed watching Chris develop as a player and we appreciate his total effort on the court. He will be missed.

They gave away miniature Billiken basketballs for years at the old Kiel Auditorium. They were the same size as they are now. I still have a couple of them lying around somewhere.

Request to Coach Soderberg: Use a full court press more often! If we can't give opponents "40 minutes of hell" ala Nolan Richardson's Razorbacks, could we at least try 10 or 20? Some of the players at the autograph session after the game told me that they enjoyed pressuring Houston late in the game.

Kevin Slaten today on his "rant" carried-on about the recent 5 year extension for Brad's contract, saying that he has not been held accountable for the team's lack of appearances in the NCAA tournament. He mentioned that if this years' team had Troy Slaten and Blake Ahearn, they would certainly have a far better record than we have currently.
Claiborne responded that Soderberg is the best, most dedicated SLU coach since Grawer and that Brad has the team and the program moving in the right direction.
Amazing- if we make an occasional two-foot shot per game we have a winning record and no one is discussing Brad's ability to coach or recruit!
