  1. Don't they say any publicity is good publicity? Not so sure with this one. If this is considered a top St. Louis media story for 2010 then I guess the SLU program carries a little more prominence in the local market than I realized.

    BILLIKEN BOONDOGGLES

St. Louis University's men's basketball program made headlines media-wise in the you've-got-to-be -kidding category.

Coach Rick Majerus was a no-show for a scheduled appearance on his own program on SLU radio outlet WXOS in mid January, then appeared the next week long enough to say he didn't want to do the program designed to promote the team.

"Take my name off ... Call it ‘The Billikens Show,'' he said on the air, adding, "With our schedule, I'm not able to allocate the time on these evenings."

The circus was just beginning. The following week he appeared on a Chicago radio station WGNU at the same time his local show was scheduled to run, so WXOS ran syndicated programming. And in an even more bizarre move, KTRS (550 AM) picked up WGN's feed, thus putting Majerus on a station that competes with SLU's broadcast partner. Irritated WXOS management threw up its hands and cancelled the show.

Then in February, the SLU radio crew missed a game at La Salle because a snowstorm hit the region the night before and closed the Philadelphia airport. The team arrived in time to beat the weather, but not the broadcasters. This would have been a little more understandable had they not been late for a game earlier in the season, also because of travel problems. Then a few days after the woes in Philadelphia, SLU fans set to watch the telecast of the Bills game at St. Joseph on Charter cable missed much of the action because of "technical difficulties."

Making matters even more inept was that viewers were not told of a problem until well into an informercial that was airing instead. Charter finally put a notice on the screen that said the game would not air because of technical difficulties - then ended up showing the latter stages of the contest.

  2. If Majerus offers the locals and they go out of town, then So what - with a capital "S". Some kids want to go out of town. If they do, then go back up to Chicago and get more player like Evans and McCall. Or to Minnesota and get another player the caliber of Jett.

agreed. local players are nice but I just want a good team that wins consistently. I could really care less what high school or city the kid is from. I think it is cool that we have currently have Kiwis and Aussies. It is not like STL is putting out tons of D1 basketball talent consistently.
  3. They were brutal, aggressive hackers, elbows flying, knew what they were doing, it was clearly an intentional team tactic. I cannot remember a team with such a thug like approach to the game playing in St. Louis. A guy behind me yelled at them "go home, convicts". Operators would not show the replays like the one of Cassity getting gouged, we all looked up to the big screens, but no replay. GREAT emotional comeback WIN.

They are NEVER replays of close plays or poor calls on the big screens. It is a total pet peeve of mine. So annoying. If the game is televised you can replays. Buy a ticket and go to the game. No replay.

  4. With finals week and the forecast for this evening it could be a sparse crowd.

    Details for Wednesday, December 15

Cloudy skies with freezing drizzle late. High around 30F. Winds ESE at 10 to 20 mph.

Evening: Freezing drizzle this evening...then cloudy late. Low 27F. Winds ENE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precip 30%.

  5. Program information listed on AT&T U-Verse for the nationally broadcast game today.

St. Louis Billikens at Duke Blue Devils from Cameron Indoor Stadium. Kwamain Mitchell leads St. Louis, as they face one of their toughest challenges of the season, squaring off with the defending national champions from Duke.

WTF. You would think someone from either AT&T, CBS or SLU would have realized this needed to be updated over the last two months. Just another annoying reminder of the team that could have been these season. Not that it would have mattered today. So sick of watching so many freshman play. I guess fortunately they were our best players against our toughest competition to date. I will believe KM and WR will be back when I actually see them on the court. If their return can be screwed up SLU will find a way to do it.

  6. As disappointed as I am about this entire mess, there are two things that appear to be encouraging from what I have read today. First, and foremost, is that it sounds like Kwamain is interested in returning to school at the semester. It will hurt to lose Willie, for sure, but Brian, Cory, Cody and Rob at least give us 4 pretty decent big guys who can, with some more experience, create challenges for opposing defenses, particularly with the outside shooting of Cory and Rob. If we get KM back by the semester we will still have a team that can make some noise in the conference.

Second, read the comments in the paper from the players who will be playing this year and you can see that they are still fired up and the team will rally around each other. The comments about the new guards are great and show a real team attitude.

Last night, my wife had to talk me off the ledge but now in the light of day I am a little more calm and cautiously optimistic that we can weather this storm! Go Bills!

I am with you. It is what is and this too shall pass. I get as fired up as anyone for Billiken basketball and am disappointed but I have been reminding myself that this is JUST basketball.
  7. -that thought crossed my mind as well as did how WR's senior year in high school was handled, but they are insistent he did nothing wrong to get suspended/ejected/expelled/un-enrolled or whatever we want to call it

-i agree with roy, give the release, not sure if you can bargain scholarship release with a legal release from any claims but worth a try, and let's move forward

-where does WR go to play????

TOTAL speculation but what IF it is MIZ? Can you imagine the bad blood hell fire that would be unleashed between the fan bases........................
  8. This is really screwed up. So Jon Smith admits in writing to the police he is the one to sleep with the girl. What is going on around here?

And Willie Sr. says his son did NOTHING. Not sure kids always tell their parents the EXACT details of situations like this..................
  9. the key to RM's success is that if/when he goes after a top local kid, he doesn't let the kid string him along like Brad used to. He already has quality back-up plans in place. He doesn't sleep on other quality players, therefore, he isn't left holding the bag at the end of the day and forced to fill up his roster with a bunch of suspects that cannot play at this level. Plus, he is good at identifying and developing players. They went after Biedscheid hard, but there is a kid in Wisconsin in the same grade who they are tracking pretty good as well (forget the name, but he is pretty good). Plus, you have Jake Barnett for the next three years.

    bad boyz for life

Exactly! RM has a plan and sticks to it year in and year out consistently. His plan is realistic. The results speak for themselves. His plan has consistently landed better recruiting classes any other SLU coach since I have been following the team over the last 30 years.

  10. Finally a decent show? Crosby, Stills & Nash, Ben Folds, George Clinton, Further on 11/11 and Vampire Weekend on 10/3!!!!! I would say they have already had and will shortly have plenty of decent shows at the Fetz. I know Ben Folds and Vampire Weekend may not be known to the later generations but doesn't mean they aren't any good.

  11. Yow named new AD at NC State

    Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State has chosen Maryland's Debbie Yow as its new athletic director.

Yow spent the past 16 years with the Terrapins, leading an athletic department that won more than 20 NCAA championships. She replaces Lee Fowler, who resigned in May and ends a 10-year tenure with the Wolfpack next week.

Yow has a strong tie to North Carolina State. The North Carolina native is the younger sister of Kay Yow, the Hall of Fame women's basketball coach who spent more than three decades with the Wolfpack before her death in January 2009 following a long fight against cancer.

Yow, 58, had told The Associated Press Thursday night that she planned to travel to Raleigh to meet with the search committee, though she wouldn't say whether she had been offered or accepted the job. The school's board of trustees approved a contract for Yow on Friday morning, said Keith Nichols, the school's director of news services.

The school will release details of that contract at a news conference Friday afternoon to formally announce Yow's hiring.

Yow inherits a program that has spent millions on facility upgrades -- most notably in football -- yet has a frustrated fan base with the slow growth of its two highest-profile teams. In football, Fowler hired Tom O'Brien away from Boston College, only to see the Wolfpack reach just one bowl game in his first three seasons.

In men's basketball, Fowler hired former Wolfpack player Sidney Lowe after a monthlong search that missed on top targets John Calipari and Rick Barnes.

Lowe inherited a program that had been to five straight NCAA tournaments, but he has failed to reach the NCAAs as he enters his fifth season, while nearby rivals North Carolina and Duke have won the past two national championships.

One of Fowler's last coaching hires was Kellie Harper as Kay Yow's successor. Harper, who was on the search committee, led the women's basketball team to the NCAA tournament in her first season.

  14. Annex was packed. Mix of Billiken fans and others. Many people watching the NFL playoffs. Stopped by 6 Row Brewery and there were a few people there. They have some tasty pretzels and the beer was good too. First time at either place. Nice additions to the neighborhood.

  15. Of course we should link to his blog. He writes about the Billikens as frequently as any one in town. We need all the press we can get. His game forecasts are excellent and more thorough than you find anywhere else. You don't think it should be linked because you don't like his blog writing style? Just on content alone he should be linked.
